guilt Anyone else feel guilty about doing this?
Bredred posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Intellectually, I know I'm doing this for my health and for the right reasons. In my head, I know I have nothing to feel guilty about and I know I'm being proactive so that I can live a long, healthy life. However, I feel guilty about cutting out a part of my digestive system that isn't putting me in imminent danger. My family has been so affected by digestive disease and cancer, that I can't help but feel guilty. My oldest daughter had her entire colon removed when she was just 7 years old because she had severe ulcerative colitis. Almost 2.5 years later, and she's still facing challenges. My husband's BIL was moved to hospice today because of his gastric cancer. His entire stomach was removed in 2009, when he was initially diagnosed. In 1998, my dad had esophogeal cancer and had his entire esophogus removed. It breaks my heart that all of them needed to go through this, and here I am, having what amounts to elective surgery on my digestive system. If only my heart could understand what my head understands. -
I had my surgery at 7:30 am yesterday and my doctor discharged me this afternoon. I was up just about every hour to pee last night. That wasn't good for my sleep, but it did get me moving around.

I Want To See Before & After Pics!
Bredred replied to Christina760's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Here I am at my heaviest (around 260) and today at 194. My surgery was July 1st and I'm 42 down from when I started my preop diet. I'm almost half way to where I'd realistically like to be. -
I was wondering what various nutritionists and surgeons have said about Protein requirements. I'm 7 weeks out today and am on a regular diet. My nut said we should be getting between 60 and 80 grams a day. She said for a smaller woman, the goal is closer to 60. I'm 5'3" and a woman. I usually hit between 60 and 70 grams a day, without any supplementation. The reason I ask is because it seems like lots of people have higher requirements.

Road trip on soft foods
Bredred replied to katierebecca83's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the little cooler. We had to travel last week and I was on soft foods. I brought lots of light baby bel cheese. If you bring a cooler, in addition to what's already been suggested, you can bring deli turkey, deli ham, hard boiled egg, etc. With stopping to eat, I'd get the chili at Wendy's, kid's 4 count grilled chicken nuggets at Chick-fil-A, one of the soups from Panera, Good luck and safe travels. -
I'm a SAHM to 3 kids, ages 3 -10. In a prior life, I was a lawyer. In a future life, I'm thinking about becoming a patient advocate. Unfortunately, I have lots of experience doing it on behalf of my oldest child.

I didn't need an extender at that weight. I usually fly Southwest. -
What foods do you no longer like?
Bredred replied to anglicanchic85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've tried tuna twice in the last two weeks. It's not like it was ever one of my favorites, but I don't like it now. -
Blue cheese dip Puree 1 cup low fat cottage cheese, 1 cup low fat yogurt, and 4 oz. crumbled blue cheese. Add a dash of onion salt and Worcestershire sauce and mix. If you want, you can add a dash of Tabasco too. According to MFP, it's approx 158 calories, 6 carbs and 14 G Protein.

Definitely not a piece of cake- 1 month post-op
Bredred replied to ms.k's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
:hugs. I'm sorry it's been rough. I'm not a fan of shakes either. I've only had 2 since my surgery on July 1. Now that I'm on puree, I get most in with foods by relying on baby bel light cheese 6 grams) and WW low fat cheese sticks (7 grams of protein). My breakfast this morning was 2 egg whites and a baby bel omelet for 16 G protein. Yesterday I had a very high protein lunch by having .3 cups chicken taco meat with WW cheese stick melted on it and a dollop of fat free Greek yogurt. -
Young Children Visiting Post-Surgery
Bredred replied to miss_cee85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was only hospitalized one night so my 3.5 year old didn't visit. If I had been in the hospital 2 nights, I wouldn't have let her visit either. Any longer, and I probably would have. -
I'm feeling really good. I've had a very smooth recovery. I haven't had any nausea and have pretty good energy. I had no problem scheduling my procedure and got my preferred date. By 1 week out, when I was able to drive, I felt like had my life back.

Going to the Movies was hard...
Bredred replied to moorecr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've gone 3 times in the last 7 weeks (preop diet and postop). It is really hard. The thing that I've found works for me is that I bring a bottle of water and one of the crystal light add ins. It's pretty much the only time I have them, so it feels like a treat. I also remind myself that if my 10 year old can't eat popcorn, I can't either. She has severe Crohn's Disease and popcorn is really bad for her. -
I had my sleeve 3.5 weeks ago and it was done by Dr. Yu, with TLC. It wasn't covered by insurance so choosing a doctor who offered complication insurance was really important to me. I like him, he did a good job, and I liked that it was single incision. I had previously seen Dr Wison, with UT. I liked him, but it would have been much more expensive because he does his at Memmorial Hermann. If it had been covered by insurance, I probably wouldn't have bothered to look elsewhere. However, I'm glad I did because of the single incision.

I drink it but fill the glass with ice to make it ice cold so it ends up diluted. I can only stomach a cup a day. That small amount is enough to get me to my 60 grams of protein.

I agree with the others that 14/almost 15 seems really young for this surgery for all the reasons mentioned. I also wanted to point out the practical considerations for waiting at least a year for her to have surgery. I'm 3.5 weeks out and have had a very smooth recovery. However, even with that, all the planning and coordination involved with meal planning and making sure I'm getting in enough fluids and protein is like a full time job. I'm on purees for another 4 days and then have 2 weeks of soft foods. For now, that means I need to have 5-6 small meals/snacks a day with all time in between spent drinking my water. I couldn't imagine doing that while at school. IMHO, you'd be better off with you having the surgery this year, and she and you can take the next year to see what it really entails and she can adopt a healthier lifestyle, along with you. If you both decide, in consultation with her regular primary care doctors, that this surgery is appropriate, you can do it as soon as school lets out next summer and she will have the whole summer to recover before going back to school. By then, she should be in a grove in terms of eating and drinking.

If the ride was clearly labeled as having a 180 pound limit and she disregarded that, than she's not blameless in this. This isn't to say that the employee wasn't negligent in allowing her to ride, especially if it didn't latch correctly. However, I know I've been to amusement parks, saw a posted weight limit and didn't go on it.

Sounds yummy! I might make this tonight for the family and puree my portion.

Going out to eat after the Sleeve
Bredred replied to css95's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm 3 weeks out and went out for dinner last night for one of the first times. We went to a Mediterranean restaurant where I'd have lots of choices on my purée diet. I had the lentil soup and only ate half. As for alcohol, my NUT strongly advises against it for the first year. As stated, everyone's doctor has different plans. I was never a big drinker, so I won't miss it. -
Hi all. I know we're supposed to take calcium citrate because it's better absorbed. Does it need to be a chewable/chewy or can we take capsules? I'm almost 3 weeks out. Thanks!
-
I also chose a multi without Iron. I do a separate iron. I bought the kirkland calcium citrate 500 mg today. I like the flavor of the bariatric advantage chews, but they work out to be so much more expensive. The kirkland were $11 for 500 tablets. I did the water test and after less than a minute, the coating had dissolved and it was a pile of powder. Thanks for the help!

capsules At what point can you swallow capsules?
Bredred posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on Monday, July 1st. I take medicine at night. It's a capsule (about the size of a tylenol capsule). I've been opening it up and pouring the little balls on a small spoonful of jello. At what point do you think I can swallow the capsule whole without feeling like it's stuck in my throat? -
When I was preop, I made chicken soup. I strained the chicken, onion, carrots and celery out so I could have the broth for preop and postop. I puréed the chicken and veggies together for the purée stage, which I'm clear to start on Monday. At the first bite class I attended, the NUT said to stay away from celery because it's hard to digest. Do you think it would be ok to have the purée I made since the celery was first boiled in the soup and then puréed with the chicken, carrots and onion?
