  1. Here I am at my heaviest (around 260) and today at 194. My surgery was July 1st and I'm 42 down from when I started my preop diet. I'm almost half way to where I'd realistically like to be.

    How much protein?

I was wondering what various nutritionists and surgeons have said about Protein requirements. I'm 7 weeks out today and am on a regular diet. My nut said we should be getting between 60 and 80 grams a day. She said for a smaller woman, the goal is closer to 60. I'm 5'3" and a woman. I usually hit between 60 and 70 grams a day, without any supplementation. The reason I ask is because it seems like lots of people have higher requirements.

    Road trip on soft foods

I agree with the little cooler. We had to travel last week and I was on soft foods. I brought lots of light baby bel cheese. If you bring a cooler, in addition to what's already been suggested, you can bring deli turkey, deli ham, hard boiled egg, etc. With stopping to eat, I'd get the chili at Wendy's, kid's 4 count grilled chicken nuggets at Chick-fil-A, one of the soups from Panera, Good luck and safe travels.
  4. I'm a SAHM to 3 kids, ages 3 -10. In a prior life, I was a lawyer. In a future life, I'm thinking about becoming a patient advocate. Unfortunately, I have lots of experience doing it on behalf of my oldest child.

    Airplane Question

I didn't need an extender at that weight. I usually fly Southwest.
  6. I've tried tuna twice in the last two weeks. It's not like it was ever one of my favorites, but I don't like it now.
  7. :hugs. I'm sorry it's been rough. I'm not a fan of shakes either. I've only had 2 since my surgery on July 1. Now that I'm on puree, I get most in with foods by relying on baby bel light cheese 6 grams) and WW low fat cheese sticks (7 grams of protein). My breakfast this morning was 2 egg whites and a baby bel omelet for 16 G protein. Yesterday I had a very high protein lunch by having .3 cups chicken taco meat with WW cheese stick melted on it and a dollop of fat free Greek yogurt.
  8. I was only hospitalized one night so my 3.5 year old didn't visit. If I had been in the hospital 2 nights, I wouldn't have let her visit either. Any longer, and I probably would have.

    Houston tx?

I'm feeling really good. I've had a very smooth recovery. I haven't had any nausea and have pretty good energy. I had no problem scheduling my procedure and got my preferred date. By 1 week out, when I was able to drive, I felt like had my life back.
  10. I've gone 3 times in the last 7 weeks (preop diet and postop). It is really hard. The thing that I've found works for me is that I bring a bottle of water and one of the crystal light add ins. It's pretty much the only time I have them, so it feels like a treat. I also remind myself that if my 10 year old can't eat popcorn, I can't either. She has severe Crohn's Disease and popcorn is really bad for her.

    Houston tx?

I had my sleeve 3.5 weeks ago and it was done by Dr. Yu, with TLC. It wasn't covered by insurance so choosing a doctor who offered complication insurance was really important to me. I like him, he did a good job, and I liked that it was single incision. I had previously seen Dr Wison, with UT. I liked him, but it would have been much more expensive because he does his at Memmorial Hermann. If it had been covered by insurance, I probably wouldn't have bothered to look elsewhere. However, I'm glad I did because of the single incision.

    IsoPURE NASTY

I drink it but fill the glass with ice to make it ice cold so it ends up diluted. I can only stomach a cup a day. That small amount is enough to get me to my 60 grams of protein.

    I need Advice!

I agree with the others that 14/almost 15 seems really young for this surgery for all the reasons mentioned. I also wanted to point out the practical considerations for waiting at least a year for her to have surgery. I'm 3.5 weeks out and have had a very smooth recovery. However, even with that, all the planning and coordination involved with meal planning and making sure I'm getting in enough fluids and protein is like a full time job. I'm on purees for another 4 days and then have 2 weeks of soft foods. For now, that means I need to have 5-6 small meals/snacks a day with all time in between spent drinking my water. I couldn't imagine doing that while at school. IMHO, you'd be better off with you having the surgery this year, and she and you can take the next year to see what it really entails and she can adopt a healthier lifestyle, along with you. If you both decide, in consultation with her regular primary care doctors, that this surgery is appropriate, you can do it as soon as school lets out next summer and she will have the whole summer to recover before going back to school. By then, she should be in a grove in terms of eating and drinking.
