Why I Post aka That guy's an A Hole
nmck replied to Paul11011's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am definitely new here but am happy to read this post! I have not ventured out of the July 2013 posts too much, but was thinking about walking away from this forum altogether with some of the advice I had seen given in the chat room, including being told I was foolish for following my pre-op diet and the number of reasons it was supposedly pointless. I am pleased to know there are many vets willing to give advice and I look forward to your input when I need it. Thank you in advance!! -
Congrats on your loss! I haven't experienced this as I am 9 days out, but I read a ton of books prior to choosing WLS. I have read that fat cells, store estrogen and as they deflate they can set you on a hormone roller coaster as they release the hormones into your system. I'm sorry I can't remember exactly which books mentioned this!

Gastric sleeve or Duodenal Switch? Which surgery to have...
nmck replied to mcg968's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree that the DS sounds super scary to me b/c of the degree of malabsoption. Even the RNY was more complex than I wanted. I would consider revising to RNY if I was unable to lose weight, but I think maintaining it will likely have less to do with my surgery and more to do with my own habits, so I'm trying to work on those seriously. For me, DS wasn't even a consideration. -
I didn't have tons of pain, but that's b/cI took my pain meds! I also needed a nap a lot! At 2 days out I was still in the hospital. Even now, 9 days out, I needed a nap after folding laundry and straightening the toys in the toy room.

11 days post op - scared I can eat alot
nmck replied to tml74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 9 days post-op and just told mu hubs today that it worried me how much more easily I could drink my protein shake, and my clear liquids. But since I am starting purees now, I had some pureed chicken and broccoli (pureed together) and that set off the restriction feeling big time!1 tbsp was all I could do. I think the pureed chicken/broc has more texture than an egg. I think you are likely to feel more restriction as you eat less soft stuff. Also, I'm watching the clock to not allow myself too long of a time to come back to a meal. -
My incisions are itching and driving me insane! I won't scratch them, but I just had to vent!!
-
Yikes! I think this is a normal itch, like when you scrape your knees and it starts to itch after a while. I've had a couple of other surgeries and never had trouble with stitches vut always remember some vague itching. I'm sorry your wife is still suffering!!

Is there someone from your clinic you can talk to that has experience with this stuff post-op? I'm so sorry you're feeling crappy!

July sleevers! Are we ready!
nmck replied to shannyd4's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm dying to weigh but my husband hid my scale at my request until I'm home for a week!! Also, I'm dreaming of pureed food which I am allowed to start on Saturday. It will be nice to go back to regular-ish meal times. My hubs is buying me a Nutri-Bullet before then. We have had a magic bullet for years and have used it a ton. So the fact that it'sdying now is no problem...it owes us nothing! but the nutri- bullet has a better construction. -
I bought a bag of Body Basix protein powder at Vitamin World. I add a half scoop to a Carnation Instant Breakfast with 8 oz milk to bring the total to 23 g. of protein per shake. I bought chocolate, and it is such a light flavor I feel likeit make the shake more creamy.

They sent me home from the hospital with Protonix and the nurse impressed the importance of ulcer prevention on me even though I said every PPI i tried had given me a headache. Well, sure enough, yesterday was day 4 on protonix and I had an unbearable headache. Ended up taking my pain meds twice last night for the headache! I just did some reading online and ordered myself some aloe vera juice which is supposedly able to cure acid reflux. I guess i will call my doc's office in the morning and ask about it. But I can't livewith headaches like that!!

Hey! I also have twins, 2 years old! I had2 c-sections (Also have a 5 year old) as well as a hernia repair after my twins, and a fibroid surgery after my first pregnancy. I am 4 days out from my sleeve and it was a piece of cake compared to the other abdominal surgeries. I can sit up on my own, and was able to shift around in the bed rather easily from the beginning. It's seriously been so easy compared to the c-section. Also, haven't need nearly as much pain meds for this one. I hope it's as comparatively easy for you too!

I got sleeved last Friday, just came home from the hospital today. My hospital is conservative with wanting you in their care and on IV fluids for at least 48 hours after leaving the recovery room. Things are going well so far...most of the pain is from gas. I walked ASAP like you're supposed to. I had to take some nausea meds in the hospital and those made me SUPER sleepy. Otherwise, all is well. I've only gotten about 8 oz total of protein shake in yesterday and today, and have set a timer on my phone to have me sipping water. Going to pick up some Muscle Milk Rockin' Refuel tomorrow to sip on as the stuff bought presurgery didn't sit well with me. I hope all of the many July 22 people are having a great start to recovery! -
They took a history and physical, asked all about med allergies and previous anesthesia experiences, gave me directions for meds up to the morning of surgery, and checked their visibility of my airways.

Thanks for passing on the sippy cup tip. I hadn't read that before but the smell of the protein powder I have tried is definitely the biggest turn off. Maybe I will get a travel coffee cup to use for it. But thereare plenty of sippy cups around the house to use in the meantime!

I ordered the unjury unflavored and plan to make it into jello! I don't know how it will taste, but I'm hopeful!

How much of a pre-op program did you go through? It's totally reasonable to tell people you worked on healthier eating habits with a dietician! -
Tomorrow is my day! Finishing up the laundry today to leave my husband in good shape for the weekend. Our house was completely clean as of yesterday, even waxed the tub and shower!! I have to report to the hospital at 8:45 am!

My day is Friday too! I still don't know what time, so I am actually hoping for 5 am to get it over with My day is Friday too! I still don't know what time, so I am actually hoping for 5 am to get it over with!! I have been on liquids since Wed 7/9.

Also make a list of things you can do when bored...I realize SAHM's are rarely bored, but if you're eating out of habit you need to replace the old habits with new ones.
