    egg drop soup

Yes! I eat it for breakfast all the time. I make my own at home. Really easy. I cant stand the taste of eggs (scrambled or hard boiled), so I like the egg drop soup to get my protein in. I just take a cup of water, add a packed of chicken broth powder, heat until its boiling, then turn down the heat. I add 1 beaten egg and stir until its cooked. Then I add a bit of soy sauce and its done! Fast, easy, and great for breakfast. My only problem lately is its been super hot, over 100 each day, so I'm finding it hard to eat soup. :-)

    Calling all June 11 sleevers

I was sleeved on June 11th. My Dr required 2 weeks of liquid diet, but it could include cream soups and yogurt. After the first 2 weeks I was able to progress to "soft foods". Basically anything not crunchy, no fresh fruits or veggies, no nuts, popcorn or seeds, no bread rice or pasta. But anything else was allowed. The NUT said to concentrate on protein first, and if still hungry then veggies. I am eating almost strictly protein right now. I do 2-6 ounce protein shakes a day, 30g protein each. I have no problem getting my protein. I think because I really like the shakes, and they are only 6 ounces, so easy to get down. I use Isopure low carb chocolate. I do ok with water and other liquids. Not the 64 I should have, but I am close, usually around 40. I eat mostly dannon light and fit greek yogurt, 12g protein each. I usually have 2 of those daily. Then various other foods, turkey meatballs, tomato soup, chili, string cheese, deli turkey, baked fish, tuna salad, egg drop soup. Lots of crystal lite, unsweetened homemade iced decaf tea, sugar free cappuccino mix, hawiian punch sugar free mixes, sugar free fudgcicles. I miss crunchy things, and veggies. I'm not tired at all, but I think everyone is different. I had no problems with energy, even a few days after surgery I was back to normal. I think a lot of that has to do with my being able to get in my protein easily tho.

    Travel foods

I love beef jerkey, and beef snack sticks. Kashi cereal, you could eat dry like a snack mix, or get some milk from a convienence store to mix in. Oatmeal in the microwavable cups that you add hot water. Peanut butter in the snack size containers.
  4. I'm a newbie, first posting. I've been reading the boards for months, but never posted until now. I was sleeved on 6-11, and am 5 days post op. Everything went amazingly smoothly. Very little pain, I didn't even need pain meds, just Tylenol. I didn't have any nausea, which is a miracle for me because everything makes me nauseous. I only vomited once in the hospital, after my upper GI, that stuff was nasty. My fear is that I feel TOO normal. I keep waiting for something to go wrong. I have been able to get in my protein and liquid requirements since I got home two days ago with no problems. I am on liquids only, and have only done protein shakes, crystal light, broth and yogurt. But today I drank too fast, instead of sipping, on accident from old habits, and it didn't hurt. It does hurt when I first swallow, as it hits my stomach, but that is all. I can eat 5 ounces of yogurt, a tablespoon at a time, and a bunch of liquid with no problems. I shouldn't be able to do that yet right? I'm definatly not hungry, no hunger at all, but other than that, and my sore stomach, everything feels the same as before surgery. I'm guessing the problems with eating will come later, when I progress to solids?

3 weeks post op excercise experiences?

I'm a month post op today. I've been walking 30-45 minutes a day. If it's too hot outside to walk (been over 100 here lately), then I have a low impact work out video that I do.
  6. My dr requires Prilosec for 3 months after surgery.

    6 month wait!

I know 6 months is tough, but it could be worse. It will go by quickly, just do what you need to do, and wait it out. I had to do the 6 month wait 3 times! It took me 10 years to have my surgery. Long story, lots of issues. But I stuck with it, and am so glad I did. Sure, I wish I could have had it done 10 years ago, and didn't have to go thru insurance approval and the 6 month wait 3 times, but in the end I am just thankful I was able to have the surgery. Better late than never.

    Does coffee effect weight loss?

Not sure about the coffee specifically, but I know my NUT said that the issue they have is that the caffeine is an appetite stimulant.

    Cereal and granola question

Grape nuts cereal is good mixed in yogurt too. I eat Kashi go lean crunch, or wheat chex once a week or so for something crunchy in the morning.

    5 guys burger!-8 weeks out

I'm guessing the grease was the problem. Ground beef was actually one of the first foods my nutritionist suggested in my soft foods phase. As long as it was chewed well. I am 4 weeks post op, and able to eat meatballs and ground beef in chili just fine.

    In recovery right now

Ask if you can have ice chips. I was able to have some immediately after sugery. When I woke up there was some next to my bed. And I would walk as soon as you can, ask them, don't want for them to ask you. The more you walk, the easier the gas pain will be.

    enlarged liver

I think a lot of that has to do with the skill of your surgeon. If they are good, they can work around the liver. Anyone who is significantly overweight will have an enlarged liver, some more than others, but still. I lost 18 pounds on my 2 week pre-op diet, and my liver was still enlarged for surgery. My surgeon was able to work around it, they use a retractor to hold the liver up and out of the way, but the surgery did take an hour longer than expected, mostly because of lack of space inside my abdomen. The surgeon was still able to do it laproscopically, he just had to be careful, and it took longer.

    Post op food help!

Every Dr is different, but mine requires 2 protein shakes a day (50g protein total), in addition to your protein from food. I asked if I could replace the protein in one shake with food instead of the shake, but they said no. The protein from the food we eat is a bonus, since we actually need 70-80g per day. If we get 50 from the shakes, then we can try to make up the rest from the limited amounts of food we can eat. Also, if you aren't getting enough protein, you are more likely to have hair loss, so its important to drink the shakes, nasty or not. :-) Just keep trying different types to see which ones you like. I tried about 6 different kinds and gagged on all of them. I finally found one that I like, and have no problem drinking them.

I hate my pre op diet!

I had to do 14 days of liquid shakes only, plus a cup of soup each day. I can honestly say the pre-op diet was tougher than the surgery, or the diet after. The cravings were horrible! I was so crabby! After day 4 it got easier. I did lose 18 pounds before surgery, so it worked! But my surgery took almost twice as long as it should have. The Dr said my liver and spleen were both large, so it was hard to get around in there. So shrinking the liver is important! It makes the surgery easier, you don't want to be under anesthesia any longer than you have to. My surgery went well, and I had no complications, but the pre-op diet is for a good reason. I know its tough, it was honestly the toughest part of this whole process. After the surgery you will be on a liquid diet too, but you wont have the cravings like you do now, so its easier to deal with.

    replacement hamburger helper!

Just my personal preference, I always, even before surgery, drain the oil from ground beef. I also rinse it with hot water, just to get rid of the fat.

What can i eat one month post-op?

It depends on your Drs. recommendations. I am one month out, and I can eat pretty much anything, I just need to chew it well. My dr said I can eat anything except bread, rice, pasta, nuts, popcorn, seeds, fresh fruits and veggies. I can do canned fruits and veggies, but not fresh. He said to eat protein first, then veggies, and if I have any room, then fruits. But every Dr is different. I've been eating a lot of soups, chili, egg salad, tuna salad, scrambled eggs, cream of wheat, high fiber dry cereal, egg drop soup, tons of greek yogurt, moist chicken, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, string cheese, baked beans, black beans, lasagna without the noodles, lots of fish, turkey meatballs.

    I Couldn't fit

I'm so sorry. I think we all know that feeling. I remember the first time I was on an airplane and couldn't buckle the seatbelt. The embarrassment was horrible. Just remember, its easy to live with your weight, but it takes a lot of hard work and bravery to change it. You should be proud of yourself that you are making the changes to make a healthier you.
  18. I had it too, drove me crazy! I asked my dr and she said to apply some anti itch cream, hydrocortisone, or Benadryl cream. It worked good. I had to put it on twice a day, just around the incision, not on it.

    6 weeks post op...now what?

I'm 3 weeks post op, and can eat pretty much anything, as long as I chew it well. No fresh fruits or veggies, only frozen or canned. NO nuts or popcorn, no rice, bread or pasta. But anything else is good. I pretty much only eat protein at this point. I have 2 protein shakes daily, for a total of 60g of protein. Then usually a greek yogurt or scrambled egg for breakfast. Lunch and dinner is usually soup, turkey meatballs, cottage cheese, tuna or fish.

    Preop Diet

I was on 2 weeks of liquid protein shakes, and I lost 18 pounds.

    Anyone feel amazing post op?

I did! I was amazed. I cant take narcotics at all, so I was worried about the pain after. All I can take is Tylenol and motrin, anything more and I am puking, even with anti nausea meds. I had almost no gas pains, I was most worried about those. I had it once or twice in my chest, but as soon as I got up and sat up I was fine. I was up walking around a few hours after my surgery. I only had nausea once, after my upper gi the next day, I got nauseated and puked once. In the hospital I only took Tylenol and iv motrin, once I got home I only took liquid Tylenol, and only for 5 days, after that I didn't need anything. By day 5 I was able to do everything I was able to do before the surgery. Bending over was still a bit tender, but not bad. I have been able to get all my protein and fluids since the day I got home from the hospital.
  22. Most of my incisions were just glued, no stiches. But the big one in my belly button had a few stitches, and then glue. I am 2 weeks and 2 days post op, and the glue has fallen off of all the incisions. They are all healed over, and fine. But the one in my belly button has the string from the stitch with the end hanging out in a big knot. It's at the top of my belly button, so it rubs against any pants that I wear and hurts. Can I cut the end of the knot off? I don't want to "unravel" the stitches, but the incision is completely healed and closed. I thought it would be a dissolvable stitch, but it hasn't dissolved so far, when you pull on it, its stuck in there.

    Soft diet starts today! Blah.

I felt this way too, and talked to the NUT about it. But she said it was very important to start eating, even just a little bit. For two reasons, first because it will establish a healthy pattern of eating 3 small meals a day. But also because your body NEEDS food, not just protein shakes. If you don't start getting some calories your body will "hold onto" the weight, and you wont lose as fast. You need some calories and fat each day. She said the small amount we eat in the beginning isn't enough to stop the weight loss, but that our bodies really need some calories with each meal. I just started soft foods this week, and have been eating egg drop soup, turkey meatballs, cottage cheese, tomato soup, mashed potatoes, and yogurt. Even if its just a bite or two to start out slow.

    Undiagnosed sleep apnea

At the very least mention it to your anesthesiologist prior to surgery. They need to know about it so they monitor you differently during surgery. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 2 years ago, and use a cpap. My anesthesia dr said they absolutely need to know because they do something different during the anesthesia.

    Who else has lactose problems?

My daughter had mild lactose intolerance a few years ago, and the lactaid worked great for her. Also I use a lactose free protein shake, and love it. Isopure low carb dutch chocolate is lactose free. I imagine they have other lactose free flavors too, but I've only tried this one. GNC sells it.
