    This week's Band Surgeries 4/4-4/8

Kathy, I just want to say that I think it is great that you do this thread every week! What a terrific thing to do for others! Congratulations everyone that is getting banded this week. I hope you have a speedy recovery!

OT: Help, my Jade plant is dying..

Try naming them and "talking" to them. I know its an old wives tale but I think it actually works! I swear that some of mine knew I was mad at them and just gave up!

    Soda Pop?

My doctor says no more carbonated liquids ever again. The nutritionist says it stretches out the pouch a bit and is bad for you anyways. I gave up soda pop a month ago now and I honestly think I feel better because of it. Plus, I use Coca Cola to get stains off my toilet and clean my car rims. Do you really want that going in your new tummy anyways?
  6. I would have the EXACT same surgeon but I think I would feel better in the end if he could have done it in the US. Also, I would have taken my husband for my companion rather than my mom and sister. Hubby has a better bedside manner. And I would pack a lighter suitcase, I didn't need 1/2 the stuff I brought.

OT: Help, my Jade plant is dying..

those look fine kathy! Just give them a day then plant them (some may try and sprout, they may not) Don't Water them right away and let them root. The Jade plant is probably the most hearty and "hard to kill" plant next to the cactus. I don't know if that makes you feel any better lol but I think it will bounce back. If anything else, the Jade is not very expensive and you can take your experiences and start anew. I have killed MANY a plant and learned from it! My first vegetable garden was a DISASTER! Plus, I live in Arizona and have to deal with all other kinds of issues like heat, sun, watering, our soil, bugs, etc. No worries, it will all work out.

How do you feel about kids banded?

Absolutely, I think it should be case by case. But I think parents need more parenting skills too. I understand that there are medical complications that make people gain weight too. It is just too common these days that parents have no clue what their preteen or teen is doing/eating/going/etc. I know that I may have a tight leash on my child age 12 but I also know that he is eating healthy, exercising and being a generally good kid. I think parents should be more aware of eating habits, where they go (are they junking food at the theatre?), WHO they hang around with, etc. If a person is 400lbs at age 16 I think we need to look at the parent for not doing their job first, then try and fix the problem through education and information. But recently I saw one post about a 12 year old getting banded and I was APALLED! But I agree, band before bypass for sure!

OT: Help, my Jade plant is dying..

Cut them at an angle with a clean cut. The removed stems or leaves can be left out for the ends to dry for a day or two, then place the ends in a pot with potting soil (not just dirt from the ground) that you've mixed in very little sand, then put some sand or gravel on top in a VERY thin layer. Plant the cutting an inch or two deep and give it VERY little water until it roots. The plant can not take drops in temps of under 50 degrees F. So if it was on your unheated porch, this might be it too. But as I said before, it looks like over watering to me. Make sure you take off any "dead" leaves regularly. The pot sounds fine but make sure you never have a "resovoir" of water in the pot shield underneath, that is bad for the plant. Jade plants are watered monthly or bi monthly are are not misted. You can take a damp cloth and dust them though just don't use any cleaning products. You can also "pinch" the stems and leaves lightly and gently to promote them growing a bit (not too hard!).

    Kathy's 10 Day Countdown Thread

Kathy, I think you just may be more of a "preparation hound" than me if that is possible!! LMAO! If I may, I recommend the fuzzy pink slippers at Payless (cheap, comfy, oh so soft and puts you in a great mood). You seem VERY organized and ready ready ready! Have you gotten your liquid Tylenol yet? I wayyyyy overpacked. I don't really remember much and I had a TON of clean clothes when I got home! Hmmm, was I naked all the time??? NEED: If you are planning on going home the day after surgery (brave girl) you will probably still be a little groggy and very slow. Call the airlines and make sure you have a wheelchair arranged on the way home and for flight transfers.

OT: Help, my Jade plant is dying..

Where did you have the plant in your house? What kind of sunlight was it getting? How much had you been watering it? Is this kept in indoor conditions? (ie is it on a porch that is not heated for the winter?) They do not require a lot of watering at all as they are a succulant plant (they store their water). The soil should nearly be completely dry before watering again. As for sunlight, more than 8 hours of direct light each day is too much. Try pulling it back from time to time to give it a "rest". But this does not look like your problem. It looks over watered. If the branches are more "rubbery" and break off easy then you have overwatered. Try to make cuttings from the upper stems that are still sound and firm. In the future, avoid overwatering in winter and cover the soil surface with a layer of sand or gravel. Watering should be MONTHLY or BI MONTHLY not weekly or daily. You may have stem rot already and if so, the plant is a bit lost to "plant heaven". You can try cutting off a good stem and replanting it, but I think it looks more savable. Some good ol fashioned TLC would do this plant some good!

    Back From Mexico And Banded!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh girl! 24 lbs in less than 2 weeks!! YOU GO GIRL!! If anyone can bounce back from things I think it is you. I have never in my life met someone and had the impression that I have in you and your dad. I am not just saying that either, you two are very compassionate, caring, good natured and wonderful people to be around. I know that I was just a better person when hanging around you. And to see your father/daughter relationship was unbelievable, what a fantastic connection you have. Call me when you can Roxanna, take care hun.

    Should I be hungry already?

Eileen, I am right there with ya girl! I got banded the same day. But I am counting the day of surgery so now I am 10 days post op (gets me to solids quicker ) I get hungry too! And it is depressing me as I lost so much weight in the first week. But now I am at a standstill. I think it will get better next week when I heal more and can do a bit of exercise. I am in the "creamies/mushy runny" stage now. I am eating 3 meals a day but FAR less than I ever did before. I need to drink more Water though. I too can take big sips without any effects. I think it might be that our swelling went down very soon. maybe we are good healers? I also heard that lower BMI's aren't as tight after surgery so we see the less restriction faster. Keep up the good fight girlie!

    My "Secret" Fantasy

I must admit I was a HUGE Vic Secret buyer. When I was 20-30 this is ALL I would buy. I even had a charge card from them! I bought the clearance catalog all the time. But alas, their largest size is 38 D for most and I am a 40-42 DD right now. For the past 2 years, I buy all my bras and panties from Lane Bryant. I LOVE them! They tend to have the "buy one get one free" a lot and occasionally the "$12.99 or "$9.99" bra with the "5 panties for $25. " I also pretty much dress head to toe in Lane Bryant. Word of warning for Lane Bryant shoppers.... their "catalog" is NOT theirs, they sold the name and the clothing nor the sizes are the same. Only online is it actually Lane Bryant. I found this out the hard way.

Help! A Little Worried about this...

Gosh, that sounds horrific! I just wish I knew WHAT it was that I was feeling half the time. I get these wierd feelings but because I have never had heartburn or reflux ever in my life, I don't know what it is or how it feels! It is good that you can identify and distinguish between the two! (throughout the day (about 3-5 times a day) I sort of "hiccup" and feel a tinge of pressure and I have noooo idea what it is) Are you now going to do liquids for a day to clear it up? I hope things are okay and everything goes back to bandtacular soon!

Oh My god is something wrong

Wait, something doesn't make sense. You said that you had your surgery March 28 (which was last week) yet you said you have lost 21 lbs since pre op on march 14. Please explain so people can better help you.
  25. princess_n_thep

    Is it really possible???

Yes Michelle, thanks. I really should email Dr Miranda I think for suggestions. Pre op I don't think I was even listening to her I have to admit. I was so nervous/excited/anxious/etc about banding that all I talked to was like the teacher on Peanuts cartoons going "wa wa wa waaaaaa wa wa wa". Today was a reality check as I pushed a bit too hard. I don't think I hurt anything because it was just walking (not even fast pace). I just think I went too far. A good nap cured me.
