People are drawn to gossip and secrets. They flee from medical jargon and too much information. If you act like you've got something to hide there will be whispers and questions. If you're upfront with no shame people really won't pay that much attention. Think about it..when you're at work (or wherever) and someone has a new cast, everyone else is wondering what happened? how did you break it? what were you doing? did you need surgery? when do you get your cast off? it's impossible to keep private. Guess what --- losing 100 lbs or so is like a hot pink cast. It's noticable. So when you start sipping on broth in front of people you know and you get sideways glances, you might as well just come out with it. You have nothing to be ashamed about. You had a sleeve gastrectomy. A large portion of you stomach was removed. THE END. If they want to know more tell them to look it up on webmd. But, you might be surprised as I have been. People are usually curious because they are supportive, not judgemental. Most likely they have an overweight spouse or parent or child so obesity is not something that is as shameful as you might be feeling. Bottom line, it is your choice. But, I think you will feel empowered if you are honest with yourself and others about the couragous decision you made to transform yourself.

I was dropping a pound a day, then I hit a plateau. I've been stuck now for about a week. From what I've been reading our bodies go into this starvation mode and try to hold onto everything. When it happens to you, just try to be patient. That's what I'm trying to do

I had mine removed while I was in the hospital. I wouldn't say it was painful, but it was a disgusting feeling. I felt like a squid was swimming through a small opening in my abdomen. Definitely not natural.

The same thing happened to me, once they introduced protein. I couldn't keep it down and they wouldn't release me until I could. I ended up staying a few extra days. I also had an extra amount of swelling and diaphragm spasms that made it difficult to breathe and swallow. Don't worry - they can't keep you forever! The swelling will subside. Are your nurses giving you liquid pain meds? Ask them if the doctor has ordered you any injectable pain meds. I prefered the hydromorphone injections over the lortab elixir because it bypassed my stomach altogether. When I did take oral pain meds the lortab was so nasty. They switched me to oxycodone and that's what I went home with. Don't be afraid to speak up and insist on something different! Hang in there.

I was sleeved 5/28 and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. I ended up spending 2 extra nights because I was vomiting and having diaphragm spasms that made me regress back to an IV only source of liquids. So now I'm at home and this whole day I've managed to get about 8 oz of water in and 30 g protein. I'm so sooo afraid of vomiting again. When I drink it takes me an hour to drink an oz. My stomach is always rumbling and queasy. Is this hunger? Or is this a sign to slow down so I don't vomit? I'm so frustrated and scared. I can NOT go back to that awful hospital...

Much better, thank you for asking. I'm able to get my prescribed protein in, but still working on all 64 oz of fluid. Feeling a little stronger every day though.

Hi there, I'm in Omaha and was sleeved on May 28th, 2013. Not too many locals on this site it seems..

My surgeon said that drinking before a meal could fill your stomach up, so it would be too full for actual eating. Drinking after a meal would wash down the food in your stomach, causing you to not feel full and eat more.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. It has gotten a little better each day. My husband is a great source of support, as is this online community.
