I had a drain and it was removed just before I was discharged from the hospital, which was the day after surgery. My doctor also gave me a pain pump which was AWESOME!!! My surgery was on a Monday and by Thursday the pain pump was empty. I had Lortab on backup and never had to take it.

Wow! I'm starting week 5 today and am just now able to reach 700 calories. I can eat very, very little at a time. I really need to learn to eat more slowly so that extreme feeling of fullness doesn't hit me so quickly!

September Sleevers...! Come on in and chat!
laffypatty replied to birdmadgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 9/16. I'm just getting off of a two-week stall (I think!) and I'm down 20 pounds since Sept. 5 when I started a self-induced pre-op diet. My surgeon didnt require more than one day, but I needed to wrap my head around things. Since surgery, I'm down 13 pounds. It's been slow. I weighed 239 on the morning of surgery. -

I'm really not trying to be the needy, whiney butt of the group, but I could seriously use some encouragement. I was sleeved on 9/16 an lost 11 pounds the first two weeks. Since then (last 12 days) the scales has not budged!! Surely this works. Surely when you have 80% of your stomach removed you lose weight. I'd like to know what you were eating and how many calories a day you were getting in your fourth week post-op. My surgery weight was 239. I'm at 228 today. Thanks for sharing your weight loss story with me. This stall is a real wench.

My doctor wouldn't allow any form of birth control or IUD three to four weeks before surgery because the increased estrogen could cause blod clots. Now, if Mirena is one of those that doesn't contain hormones or estrogen of any sort, you should be fine. My doctor is a bit on the conservative side, I've observed.

I got my calories up to just over 700 today. I felt great and had tons of energy! I just hope the scale starts moving since I upped my cals. Seems so counterintuitive! -

I'm getting most of my protein, averaging about 70 grams per day. I force myself to drink a bottle of Isopure every day because that's 40 grams! This morning, I made my Syntrax Nectar shake with two scoops so I could both increase my calories AND my protein. It'll take me a while to finish it, but when I do, that'll be 240 calories and 42 grams of protein. I'll take it! :-) -

Thanks. I found this great recipe for egg salad made with Greek yogurt and avocado. I will make that for lunch. I really do need to eat more! I appreciate your response. -
Nausea, slow loss, possible regret
laffypatty posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good evening everyone. I was sleeved on 9/16. I was fortunate to have little to no pain and a very quick recovery post-op. I even returned to work one week after surgery. On Saturday (2 days ago), I started having nausea. I've always drank a gallon of water per day, and now water is the greatest offender. I get nauseated after a sip. I'm still getting my liquids in and protein, by the hardest, via Isopure and shakes but cannot tolerate solids. I lost 11 pounds during my first two weeks and nothing since. In fact, when I got on the scale yesterday, I'd gained two pounds. How is that even possible when I'm consuming less than 500 calories per day, most of which is protein?! (I log everything in MFP.) I've been following this forum for almost six months now. I've seen everyone's success, but when the scale isn't moving, I can't help but wonder WTH?? I really hope I don't live to regret this. I've always been a high energy person and I'm pretty useless these days, which is awful since I work full-time, and have a 3-year-old and 7-month-old. My husband helps a lot (thank goodness!) Please tell me this works. Please, please, please! -
Nausea, slow loss, possible regret

Thank you all so much for the support. Good news! No nausea today. So far today, I've eaten scrambled eggs, 1/2 banana and about 3/4 of a Quest bar. That's all in the last four hours. I'm feeling great. I think I'm still "learning" my sleeve. And I'm learning that I just can't tolerate chicken at this point. I do great with seafood, which is wonderful since I love it. I live in Louisiana - all seafood, all the time! -
Nausea, slow loss, possible regret

Thanks, everyone. What's funny is that at the beginning of week 3, I was instructed to have mashed foods and could eat fine, smooth chicken salad. I ate it with no problem last week but can't tolerate it this week. I can handle protein bars and shakes just fine. I really think my body just isn't ready for solids. If the nausea worsens or doesn't get better in a few days, I'll call my doc. I'm scheduled to see him next week... I'll try to up my calories. I started working our today. Hoping that gives me more energy and helps move the scale! -
Stopped losing weight (and even gained) only 2 weeks after surgery - normal?
laffypatty replied to SleeveFox's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 12 pounds my first two weeks and not a pound since; I'm nearing the end of week 3. I've been a perfect angel. No lie!! I'm getting in 65-80 grams of protein per day but still haven't reached more than about 475 calories. I haven't done much exercise because I have a nasty sinus infection and am doing breathing treatments every few hours. Day of surgery (9/16), I weighed 239. Today I'm at 227. I heard about the dreaded week 3 stall. Just have to keep the faith that the weight WILL come off. (It will come off, won't it?!) -

I always start my day with either a Premier Protein shake (30g protein) or a Syntrax nectar chocolate truffle shake made with unsweetened almond milk, 1 tbsp PB2 and 1 tbsp powdered egg whites (37g protein). At some point in the day, I have either 1/2C plain, Greek, no fat Chobani yogurt (18g protein) or 1/2C 1% skim cottage cheese (11g protein). I drink one bottle of coconut Isopure every afternoon (40g protein). If I'm in and out of meetings and can't get to the Isopure, my "go to" is unjury chicken broth (21g protein) or 1 whole egg scrambled with 1 egg white (17g protein). Some days, I'll eat 1/2 Quest bar. Have you tried those? They come in a variety of flavors. While they appear to be high in carbs, they're actually high fiber (17-19g), generating only 3-5 net carbs. One whole bar is at least 20g protein.

I actually thought the chicken broth was great. I'd also warm a can of beef broth and add a scoop of unflavored Unjury for protein. I got a lot of use out of unflavored Unjury. I cooked a vegetable beef soup for the family today. Since I'm only three weeks post surgery, I strained a bowl of soup and added unflavored Unjury to the broth.

You inspire me! I was sleeved on 9/16 at 239 pounds. I'm 5'6, my goal is 160 and I hope to get there in six to seven months! Glad to see so many who've reached that sort of weight loss in that timeframe. I'm about 10 pounds down since surgery. Still have a long way to go, but it doesn't at all seem out of reach. -

You look amazing! Would you mind sharing your height and your starting weight? -
I have Aetna and was approved. When my case was submitted, my BMI was exactly 40. I had none of Aetna's listed comorbidities (diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, etc). Nor did my weight history indicate a BMI of 40+ for two years. (It was 40 one year and 38 another.) I do, however, have sever osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease in my knees because of years of being overweight. My orthopedist wrote me a letter of medical necessity for surgery. Additionally, I wrote a personal narrative and had it included in my file that was submitted to Aetna. My narrative/letter detailed my lifelong struggle with weight from my earliest memory at age 5. It chronicled every diet I'd ever been on, including my first Weight Watchers meeting at age 8, and Fen-Phen/Redux at age 16. When the Aetna nurse called me, she said, "I read your letter and wanted to tell you myself that you're approved." I was told by the bariatric coordinator at my surgeon's office that approval really comes down to whoever is reviewing your case. Luckily, I tugged on that nurse's heart strings. My story was a compelling one that outlined my family history and my plea to not be another broken branch on that tree.

I'm sorry. I meant to ask how grams of carbs NtvTxn has per day. -
My doctor sends his patients home with a "pain ball" attached to the stomach via a small IV. The ball contains pain medicine that's time-released and goes directly to the stomach. Since it's localized, it doesn't mess with your head. I also had an Rx for Lortab. My pain ball went dry by day 4 post op and I have a nearly full bottle of Lortab; i haven't taken pain meds in three days. As other posters have said, the worse pain was gas pain from having our tummies blown up during surgery. I highly recommend getting a surgeon who uses the pain ball. The recovery is dramatically easier for those of us with it. I'm day six post-op and still no pain. None whatsoever. I've told everyone that this is far easier than childbirth.
