I'm not so sure that was dumping so much as getting stuck though I could be wrong. Dumping tends to happen when the foods, again usually high sugar or high fat, hit the blood stream too quickly I believe.

Call the Bariatrics police!
Band07 replied to jackiemc1987's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why exactly is that ? We've debated before, you know that I'm respectful of others, but that I also appreciate valid arguments and facts to back them up, why would it "tickle" you that I would ask for research and documented proof before making an educated decision about my health especially when SO many doctors also see this issue so differently. Or was that not directed at me ? -
Call the Bariatrics police!
Band07 replied to jackiemc1987's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program is very conservative, particularly about alcohol. The transference of addictions was the main concern, as nutritionist, surgeons, psycholologist, and nurses all discussed with me during all stages of this process. I drank maybe a glass of wine a month before surgery, so didn't quite understand what the big deal was. Well after they showed the research during our various meetings...I no longer questioned the importance of being aware of this problem. Combine the research proven issues of addiction, empty calories, stress on the liver after a major surgery, not to mention my new tummy is so small I really don't want to waste space on alcohol...I choose not to go against my program's rules in regards to alcohol. Just not worth it in my opinion. But something I've learned on boards...some people rationalize/loosely interpret their programs rules...so my words or the words of way more experienced/successful others is taken offense to or just ignored anyways no matter how much logic is provided. Folks will do what they want to do period. Again this seems like program recommendations, where is the research you speak of that was presented to you ? I would like to see that. -
Dumping is not always explosive diarrhea. In fact I experienced dumping the first six months after my sleeve and never once had diarrhea. I would however get very nauseous, I would get sweats, and more less feel like crap for about 30 mins. It was usually from eating something with too much grease or something too sweet.

Call the Bariatrics police!
Band07 replied to jackiemc1987's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay, does anyone have any information stating that alcohol is dangerous too soon after surgery ? All I can find is "it can impact you differently" in other words you feel it a lot faster and of coarse empty calories and the risk of transfer addiction, but all that aside, I'm looking for actual research showing it is a risk to staple line ect. My surgeon had no stipulations on alcohol following the sleeve and in fact said "it's a liquid" you'll be fine, I had 2 margaritas about a month out. However, I recently had a revision so I'm looking for information in order to make an informed decision this time about if I would want to have a drink next weekend while out of town for the Holiday. -
I'm only 3 weeks 3 days post mini bypass but Iv had 2 prior weight loss surgeries so really I'm an 8 yr vet. Here is what I can tell you 100%, your eating will be what you want it to be. You can stay on plan, always eat protein first, make good choices and treat yourself in moderation, or, you can disregard everything you've been told and the eating plan recommended to you and go back to old habits. You can eat junk food and fast food and more less anything you can get down. Where you are one year from now, is a question only you can answer.

I'm pre op, with a post op question.
Band07 replied to reedawn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I felt exhausted and more less beat up. No pain, just uncomfortable really but as soon as I was starting to feel better I ended up in the ER dehydrated with pneumonia in both lungs so then I felt terrible again. I'm 3 weeks and 3 days post op and the last 3 days has been more less amazing compared to the last 3 weeks ! I finally have some energy back and feel like myself again. I thought this would be a breeze as it's my 3rd surgery but this one kicked my butt, be prepared for anything ! -

Drain incision healing
Band07 replied to hellohealthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks and 3 days post op and my incisions Including the drain look amazing!! My drain was never stitched once they removed it and it's barely noticeable. I had glue only on the outside of all of mine and I'm wearing a bikini today and feel like they don't draw any extra attention. -
Im sorry you have to go through that, I hope you find the support you're looking for. My point is only that with the band you may not need a revision because of the crohns but there is about a 90% chance you would need a revision from all of the many complications that come with the band and yes it's easier to revise than a bypass but it's still another surgery and surgery is always a risk. Good luck to you.

So you don't believe in living a life of moderation ? You don't think that it's possible to be enjoy those things on occasion and still be successful post surgery ? Why not have both and just find a way to incorporate the things you love as an occasional treat and eat well and stay on plan the other 80% of the time?

Iv never known this to be the case and Iv worked in bariatric surgery for years. Yes, every surgeon has their specific beliefs and guidelines however that from what Iv seen is for all of their patients and not an individualized plan unless there would be some very serious health issues to consider or some extenuating circumstances.

This is from the ASMBS : Misconception: Many bariatric patients become alcoholics after their surgery. Truth: Actually, only a small percentage of bariatric patients claim to have problems with alcohol after surgery. Most (but not all) who abuse alcohol after surgery had problems with alcohol abuse at some period of time prior to surgery. Alcohol sensitivity, (particularly if alcohol is consumed during the rapid weight-loss period), is increased after bariatric surgery so that the effects of alcohol are felt with fewer drinks than before surgery. Studies also find with certain bariatric procedures (such as the gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) that drinking an alcoholic beverage increases blood alcohol to levels that are considerably higher than before surgery or in comparison to the alcohol levels of individuals who have not had a bariatric procedure. For all of these reasons, bariatric patients are advised to take certain precautions regarding alcohol. If you're someone who occasionally partakes, there is really no reason not to continue to do so. Telling patients to never drink again is absurd and completely unnecessary. Yes transfer addiction can be a concern but there are many things besides alcohol that are risky. I for one more less became a whore after I lost 100 lbs. Thankfully it wasn't long lived and I came to my senses before I ruined my life and my reputation !

How can I be stalled at 10 days post surgery
Band07 replied to trishaz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes it's possible to gain when working out as your muscles swell and hold water, but there is no such thing as starvation mode. This was proven in the Minnesota starvation experiment years ago. If it existed, anorexics would not be able to literally starve do death. -

Band07 replied to trishaz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is no such thing as starvation mode. Just keep doing what you're doing. Your body needs to take time out to adjust after a big loss but you will keep losing as long as you burn more than you consume. -
Hormones are stored in fat cells, as we lose weight our emotions are all over the place ! Definitely talk to a doctor, you may need an estrogen patch or yes antidepressants. Also, as the weather is getting nicer be sure to get out in the sun ! A great natural antidepressant ! Are there groups you can join locally ? Does your doc office offer support groups or can they give you the name of someone else in your area that may be interested in a support person ? You're new life if just beginning !! You're doing amazing and need to get out there and start enjoying what you've worked so hard for !!

How can I be stalled at 10 days post surgery
Band07 replied to trishaz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You lost 15 lbs in 8 days !! This is your body regrouping. It's trying to figure out what just happened. This is completely normal and expected. Focus on recovery and not weight loss the first month. -
What was your post-op diet like?
Band07 replied to imjenn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One week clear liquids, 1 week full liquids, one week purée, one week soft back to regular foods as tolerated in week 5. -
Hi there, I wanted to post a review of my experiences though I know a lot of you have been following me in some other posts I wanted a new topic so that others who are researching could easily find it. Here is my story. I left my house 5 am (Eastern time) on Thursday and after a very long day of travel and one delayed flight I made it to Star Medica around 2pm (4pm Eastern time) No trouble at all crossing the boarder, in fact we didn't even have to stop the van. Also, I had some worries (okay A LOT of worries) about Juarez but once there I actually felt silly! Everything appeared completely safe and I never gave it another thought. In fact had I not been scheduled for surgery same day, I would have went across the street for dinner and not thought anything of it. Which brings be to my first bit of advice...for me personally, flying in the same day as surgery was just way too much ! I did not get to surgery until 7pm (9pm to my body) and I was EXHAUSTED, GROUCHY, and STARVING to death. Be aware, if you are someone who feels they need to know every little detail and what the plan is at all times, you may have some trouble. Things really kind of just happen when they happen and you're just along for the ride. Surgery itself went great and I was in recovery by 10pm. Mine took longer because I had a revision from sleeve to MGB. I felt pretty good and slept on and off through the night. They do not hover over you so don't expect that like in the US where they come in every five mins. However, they did come immediately if I called for someone. I stayed one step ahead and asked for a spirometer before they offered and I was up walking as soon as I was able. I had pretty bad gas pain in my left shoulder and I had a drain (some do some don't) and it was very uncomfortable for me. I walked as much as I could and took gas x strips but it still was very uncomfortable, I won't say I was in pain though, just very uncomfortable. They brought me ice chips that mid morning and around 1pm some broth (delicious) and Jello (yuck) and hot tea and apple juice. It was wonderful to have anything really by that point. Dr. Rod and the other two came in to check on me twice that day, all were very nice but they are busy and they come and go quick so have your questions ready! By 5 that evening I had my drain out and my leak test then more broth. They gave me a sleeping pill to rest well to prepare for travel the next day. My hubby went with me, he ate in the cafeteria for $5 a meal including drink and we thought that was great! It wasn't the most comfortable sleeping for him but he managed. My only other complaint would be that the shower was cold but others I talked too said they had plenty of hot Water so not sure what was up with that. Also, as you've read I'm sure not all the nurses speak English especially overnight but we managed. I'm happy with the experience and would have no problem recommending Dr. Rod and his team. I'm happy to answer any specific questions anyone has.
