Almost 4 wks out, new pain

My baby had a really bad leak after his bowel resection(he was 30 days old when the leak happened, 25 days old during the first surgery). They knew to do an x-ray to check for a leak because he all of the sudden started running a fever, his heart rate was all of the sudden elevated, his tummy was no longer soft, and his blood pressure was really low. So most likely you would have a lot more symptoms if it were a leak. I hope you feel better soon.

    Regrets?

This is not a regret, but because of the surgery my baby making plans are put on hold for 6-12 months. My baby is 15 months old and we originally wanted to have another child when he was 2ish, but now it will be about 3ish. Other than that, I had a rough night and next day after surgery because they could not get my nausea under control. I threw up a lot, which didn't hurt as much as you think it would right after abdominal surgery. I am also a wimp when it comes to the type of pain you have after surgery, but even so, at almost 4 weeks post op I am very glad I had this surgery. It's amazing how dropping almost 30 pounds pretty quickly can make you feel.

    june 2013 sleevers!

I was sleeved on 6/25, and including my 2 week pre-op diet, I've lost 28 pounds. I haven't lost anything for about a week, but I'm not worried about it. Our bodies are complex and weird. I have faith that as long as I follow my surgeon's plan that I WILL lose lots of weight. Interestingly, during my 3 week very strict liquid post op diet, I had a lot of head hunger. Now that I am on soft foods, it has all gone away. I'm hoping that lasts!
  4. I was sleeved on 6/25, and for three weeks followed my surgeon's strict liquid only diet. Now that I am on soft foods I've found that I can eat more than I thought I would be able to. I can eat an entire pudding cup in 1 sitting. Is that normal at this stage? (almost 4 weeks post-op)

Yes, I was staying two nights because I was from out of town, but I bet they would have kept me two nights anyway since my vomiting wasn't under control until late Wednesday night. I *think* her name was Patricia. I was so out of it, I'm not sure. She was a perfectly capable nurse, but we didn't exactly click. I got the feeling that I was annoying her because I wasn't walking enough. She would tell me she wanted to see me walking and then immediately leave the room without unhooking my leg things or unplugging my IV. I was like "so how am I supposed to walk if I can't undo anything myself?" (my husband was with our baby, so I was by myself after that first night) I was so drugged on the anti nausea stuff that I would just go back to sleep after she left.
  6. Thank you. And, yes, it is kind of nice to think of one pudding cup as a lot of food!

I believe he said he has done 6,000 total, but I don't know if that is just sleeve surgeries or if that includes lap bands and bypass.

    How old...

I understand. I had my first baby at 33, he's 15 months old. I was sleeved on 6/25. I chose not to go through insurance because they required a 6 month wait, which I learned often turned into 8-9 months. My husband and I would like to have 2 more biological children, so waiting an additional 6-9 months at my age seemed like a big deal. It also would lead to a bigger age difference between our children than we would like. I plan to start TTC no sooner than 1 year post op. With my son, DH and I didn't prevent pregnancy for about 9 months, and then the first month we proactively tried to get pregnant (DTD every other day) we shockingly got pregnant. (I always had irregular periods and have several PCOS symptoms, and my mother had lots of miscarriages, so I assumed I'd have trouble) I'm hoping it will be as easy the next time. Realistically, age 35 is when your risks for something going wrong with the pregnancy and/or the baby skyrocket. However, most women age 35+ end up with healthy babies.
  9. I was almost a year post partum, was nursing, and eating NO dairy (so no ice cream), and had not lost any of the weight that I gained just after I had my baby (my baby spent 5 weeks in the hospital starting at 25 days old, and had 3 emergency surgeries. I gained back the pregnancy weight I had lost plus a few more during that time). I stopped nursing, so I began eating dairy again and almost instantly gained 8 pounds. Since I want to have at least two more children, I realized that I was looking at adding another 40-50 pounds or so to my current weight over the next few years. That would've put me at 300 pounds on a 5'3 frame.

Yes, I have dark curly hair and glasses, although my hair was pulled back and had been slept on so it probably didn't look curly. I was soooooooooooooooooo miserable. I had thrown up when I got out of bed to go the the meeting, and I was just hoping I wouldn't throw up in front of everyone. When my nurse woke me up to go to it I reminded her that I was staying overnight and kind of begged to go the next day, but she made me go (probably because I hadn't been walking like I was supposed to)

He told me that he had personally fixed 12 leaks, although only 3 were his patients. He said each one was the result of eating too much and/or the wrong thing too soon. He told me that the group of doctors he works with have had 8 deaths total. None were actually during the surgery, but were some time later. He actually choked up describing one that was a colleague that had some significant heart issues and really probably should not have had the surgery.
  12. My surgeon's liquid post op diet is no joke. It's three weeks of liquids that can fit easily through a strainer, so no jell-o, pudding, yogurt, etc. To make it worse I hate soup except chicken broth based, so these 3 weeks were pretty tough. It's just really strange not to chew anything. Today starts my 3 week soft food phase and I have never been so happy to have ricotta cheese in my life! I'm so glad that part is behind me!
  13. Oh my goodness I don't think I could have done this for another week! Since I don't like soup, chicken broth was the only thing I ate in the soup family. I'm glad you've gotten to move on too!

I forgot to mention before my favorite thing about Dr. Nick. During my consultation, I asked him point blank how many patients he has lost, how many had leaks, and how many had other significant complications. He didn't bat an eye and gave me detailed information. I was also impressed that he knew those numbers off the top of his head. He was also straight forward about what WLS does to marriages (my husband was with me). I didn't feel like he was trying to sell me on the surgery. It felt like he believed in the surgery, and his skill, but he had no problem laying out the cons and being forthcoming with bad outcomes he has seen.

I was one of the ones sleeping sitting up. They had recently given me phenegrin for my horrible nauseau and it knocked me out! I felt so bad because I was sitting next to the NUT giving the presentation.

    Hey June 25 Sleevers

I was sleeved on 6/25. My internal stitch popped yesterday, and since then my abdominal pain has gotten better. I'm a wimp though, so it still bothers me when I get up or down. I had a rough time in the evening and day following surgery, but I have steadily improved since then. Today, 7/17, I get to finally start soft foods and I am super happy about that. The last 10 days or so of my strict liquid diet (no lumps, bumps, jell-o, pudding, yogurt, etc) has been difficult, but I did it. I've lost 28 pounds total since the 2 week pre-op diet and I am very pleased with that. I'm hoping I can get enough Protein in with soft foods to ditch the protein shakes, but we'll see. My energy level is still pretty low, but once again I'm a wimp and am probably resting a little too much. I'm hoping I'll feel better with actual food in me.
  17. I think it's helpful to remember why you did this. When I needed to restart my dedication over the last 3 weeks I googled articles related to childhood obesity. My biggest reason, among many, to get this surgery is so that I will learn healthy eating and cooking habits and pass them on to my 15 month old son. Being an overweight kid is hard and I don't want him to go through that.
  18. I had my surgery on a Tuesday afternoon and was throwing up any time I got out of bed until Wednesday night. They gave me reglan, phenegren, zofran, repeat and could not get it under control. Finally they got me a stronger drug that I think started with a p and ended with a zole and it worked. I've not thrown up since and have had only minor nauseau here and there that zofran has fixed. Also, when I was discharged they made me drink liquid potassium. It was by far the foulest thing I have ever put in my mouth. It must be what Satan's urine tastes like.

    Sleeve with a baby

I was sleeved on 6/25. My baby is 15 months old and 21 pounds. My surgeon said that I should not be in charge of him on my own for at least 1 week post op, but after that I could take care of him myself and just to try and limit lifting him. I had my gall bladder out in November, and I had a hard time lifting him for about 2 weeks post op then when he was 16 pounds, so I knew I should have help longer than my surgeon recommended. I've had varying levels of help since surgery and I am very thankful because the 2 times I have picked him up post op it's been pretty painful. You may be just fine, but you might want to try and arrange for more help just in case.

    Help after surgery

I'm a wimp, and the dosage on my pain meds were too low, so I would have had a hard time by myself for the first 3 days or so out of the hospital.

    Buyers remorse anyone?

I am almost 3 weeks out, and I've had a couple of the " What the heck did I do moments!?!?!", but overall I am pleased so far even though I am still having pain, initially had a rough time post op, and am sooooooooooo tired of the liquid phase (2 more days till soft foods!) Like someone else said, I think that any regretish feelings I have come from the fact that I couldn't get a hold on the weight on my own, and that I needed the surgery. Sometimes it still seems surreal that I got large enough to qualify for the surgery, or that I actually had it done.
  22. I am almost 3 weeks post op and I make my shakes with 1% milk and only 4 ounces at a time. I can drink those 4 ounces in about 15ish minutes. I really haven't had any problems with drinking too much too fast. Only twice I've gotten a little twinge in my chest that I took for a sign to slow down or stop drinking for awhile.

    IM GOING CRAZY

I was given a prescription for pepcid, (I have to crush it). Call your doctor and ask about it or if there is something over the counter y ou can take. I second the Isopure. They gave that to me in the hospital on day 2.

    IM GOING CRAZY

I feel you. I'm on a 3 week liquid diet, and he means liquids, no jell-o, yogurt, pudding, etc. I have 3 more days to go and I am soooooooooooooo ready to move on the soft foods.
