I was just banded on Friday, how long do you think I will feel uncomfortable to burp? Also, how can I tell if I have any restriction while on the liquid diet? I know most people do not, but some do I was just wondering how I tell if I'm one of the lucky ones.

I just wanted to add that when I did question the doctor again about lifting he said the worse that could happen was I may be sore a little longer than if I was not lifting but no damage to anything I had done.

weight gain days following surgery?
wanabthin replied to pronetus's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 220 the morning of surgery and 222 when I came home and for the next couple of days. I had noticable swelling around the port site so I'm sure that was the extra 2 lbs. I think it is probably normal. Today one week post op I'm 215.5 so it does go back down I guess. -
Sorry, SBD= South Beach Diet. I actually usually fry it in a little olive oil but you could probably bake it too.

I hope you get a better respone than I did to this one. My doctor told me I was fine to life my 11 month old and that no damage would be done. (He weighs around 20lbs) However, the nurse who read my discharge instructions told me not to life him for two weeks. Well, when my doc. called to check on me two days after surgery I asked again and he said lifting was fine. I was very confused. So, I did not lift him for the the three days after surgery while DH was off work but once he went back on Monday I really didn't have much choice. The only time it is rough is if I lift him off the ground and it is better if I bend my knees. Other than that it is okay if he is in his crib, high chair, car seat whatever. Good luck, but yes you should go by your personal doctors advice.

I was just banded on 8/3 and I researched very, very well in preparation. The one thing I did not see anything about and would have been helpful to know is that it can be hard to wear your normal clothes after surgery. It was easy to wear comfortable stretchy clothes over the weekend, but I went back to work on Monday and I have had a problem all week with wearing something that does not irritate my incisions. I also had a little swelling around the port site. I am sitting here right now with my pants unbuttoned and unzipped for comfort. This is especially true since my clothes were a little tight to begin with and somtimes pushes the fat up when I put them on (you know that innertube look I'm talking about) Had I known I would have invested in something like summer dresses or stretchy pants for the first couple of weeks. Other than that things have been great and this borad was VERY helpful in preparing me.

Oh, thank you! Why didn't I think of that! My father goes fishing almost every weekend and they have a freezer full of fish. That would be perfect! Also I have a GREAT recipe from SBD. If you soak it in a little egg and roll it in a mixture of garlic and parmasean cheese it is as good as breading w/o the heavy breading. I will definately use this. Thanks!

Thank you for the replies, however, our heat index here has been around 106 degrees and if I served chilli, I think my family would probably drown me in the pool! I do like the idea of the tuna salad or maybe I could even do some chicken salad, that might work. Thanks again!

What do I need to get through post surgery?
wanabthin replied to badonkadonkbutt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just banded on Friday and really other than my script for pain meds, some soups and broth and a strainer I don't think I required anything extra. There is a link under the FAQ board if you want to check it out. My only issue has been finding comfortable clothes to wear to work (I went back on Monday) that do not bother my incisions. Good luck to you. -
I don't think this is a "given" after surgery. In fact I had asked the nurse about what i could wear and she told me I wouldn't have to worry about it. Also, depending on where your incisions are the bra may not be an issue. I have been fine with my regular underwires and even wore one home after surgery. I just think others should be aware so they don't end up with their pants undone like me.

general post-surgery questions
wanabthin replied to michelle36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if this will help or not, but a close friend of mine had lost about 90 lbs and hit a big plateau and did not lose for almost a year! Well, when I started my preop slimfast diet she did it with me for support. She did the two shakes plus a sensible dinner though and increased her exercise. She lost 13lbs in two weeks and is now back on track. I know the slimfast is terrible!!! but just sharing what worked for her. Good luck, and congratulations on your amazing success!!! -
Limbo-time before surgery
wanabthin replied to Bandwagon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let me just say that if I had to wait two months for surgery, I would have probably gained about 30lbs! Once I had my consultation and the surgery was scheduled, I had 4 weeks until I had to start the preop diet so in my head I was thinking, "might as well eat now, I won't be able to for 6 weeks" so I ate anything/everything and gained 10lbs! The good thing was I lost 9 of it during my 2 week preop diet, the surgery went great and I am down another 3lbs since Friday. I think a lot of us go on pre surgery binges but look at it logically, if we didn't have issues with food to begin with, we wouldn't need the band. Just try to keep in mind the more you put on the more you have to take off. On the other hand, I had pretty much had all my favorites and while the preop diet was HARD, the postop had been fairly easy. Best of luck! -
Bump...anyone?

I had surgery on Friday 8/3 rested over the weekend and was back at work on Monday. I was pretty much at my desk most of the day. I was a little more sore than usual that evening but nothing too bad. THe one thing I wish I knew was that my work clothes don't fit so well with the swelling and where my incisions are but that is the only issue I have had.

9 days post-op still nothing
wanabthin replied to yummieT's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm not trying to be harsh, but didn't your doctor or nurse tell you that the first 4/6 weeks after surgery is NOT about weight loss, it is recovery. If you read through the boards, you will see that many many many people do not lose the first weeks after surgery and often need multiple fills before the weight loss really starts. I'm sorry you are disappointed but try not to worry about the weight and focus on the post op diet/recovery so your body will be ready for the real weight loss. -
Been there, done that, didn't work.

Thankfully, my doctor advised anything I can get through a straw. So, I went and bought a small strainer with a handle and I've been making cream of mushroom soup, french onion, cream of chicken, cream of broccoli ( I usually buy the soup at hand) and then I just strain out the solids. Its actually been okay. I also bought yogurt smoothies from the dairy section premade only 90 calories for breakfast. I know its rough but might as well try to make the best of it. Good luck!

I am on my 4th day post op. I am aloud any liquids i can get through a straw but the first 24 hours were clear liquids. I made chicken noodle soup and then drained out the noodles which I think is much better than chicken broth out of the can. Also I got a Progresso french onion and strianed out the onion and it was pretty good.

Help...surgery tomorrow...did not loose much pre-op weight
wanabthin replied to sweetforlife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on Fridaya and i was really freaked out about my liver too! I only lost 9lbs on the preop diet but I had gained 10 before I started! Anyway, at least for me everything went great the surgeon said it was the easiest he had done in a while. My biggest surprise was that no one even asked me about the preop diet and they didn't even weigh me! I guess every place is different though. Good luck! -
I was banded on Friday and I still seem to have swelling around where the port site is. Is this normal? Also still some tightness in my chest and it sometimes feels like I need to burp but it is not comfortable to do so. Everything else seems to be going good except for the burning in my stomach muscle when I move to fast.

Going to the potty BM when on liguids??
wanabthin replied to aluckygem's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, I was banded Friday and according to my discharge instructions, if I went more than 48 hours w/o a BM then I needed to look into a laxative, stool softener for something of the sort. Then in the next paraghaph it discussed the liklihood of loose BM while on the liquid diet and advised Kaopectake (sp?) for that. -
Hi! I'm from Ohio too. I was just banded by Dr. Osbourn from Cincinnati Weight Loss Center on Friday. Just wondering where you are being banded at. Good luck! I'm so glad I didn't have to go thru all of that. Congratulations on getting this far. I hope the time goes by fast for you.

I was pretty nervous but ther surgeon said it couldn't have went better! Everything was perfect. I felt pretty good last night, I'm a little more sore today but the meds are helping. The one thing I didn't expect was to feel hungry! Everyone said I would have swelling and feel full but I don't. In fact my stomach has even growled a few times. Is this normal? Also, the doc. said no restrictions on lifting but the nurse wrote no lifing for 2 weeks on my discharge papers. I have a baby at home, so I'm not sure what to do with the conflicting information. What was everyone else told?

Everyone's doctor is different and requires different things, lets not forget that. I am absolutely aloud tomato soup, cream of mushroom soup w/o the mushrooms, broccoli soup strained, as well as pudding, yogurt, jello, ect. the first two weeks and they gave me a straw to drink out of in recovery yesterday. I think we should all be following the advice of our own doctors during this time, but that is just my opinion.

I had surgery yesterday 8/3 too. I was really nervous but it went perfectly. I tried to go to bed when I got home but couldn't stay there. I felt really pretty good. Today I have had some pain especially when getting up and down. And, even though they told me I would feel full I don't. In fact I feel hungry and my stomach has growled a few times. I just had some chicken noodle soup broth so that has helped. My incisions look really good too. I'm planning on being back at work on Monday and if things continue to go this well, I'm sure it won't be a problem. Good luck and I agree it is normal to be nervous but it only lasts till you get in the room and then it will all be fine.
