  1. I was on May 21st at 7:30 am. Very difficult so far. I'm worried about dehydration. Extreme discomfort.

    Rapid weight loss......

I've experienced the same thing. I did NOT gain weight from fluids in the hospital. I was in the hospi 2 nights and 3 days and when I came home I was 9lbs down. When I weighed after surgery I was 3lbs down. I am having a difficult time with gas, bloating, discomfort and fullness, yet I can't hardly keep anything down and I have diarrhea too. I'm worried about getting dehydrated but not worried about rapid weight loss. Doc said people who are nauseated and discomforted after surgery tolerate food best later on down the road and lose the most weight.

Not such a great belly day

I had my procedure on Tuesday, and even Water makes me feel bloated gassy and full. I use to drink a gallon and a half a day and now I can't even get the 64oz down. Constant diarrhea, nausea, bloating, etc. and the less I eat the weaker I feel. Good news is the surgeon said people who are like that have the greatest weight loss results and can tolerate more foods later on. I'm going to incorporate Probiotics and sugar free Popsicles.

    Keeping it a secret

I myself am not even a week post op. I did take before pics and I'll take after pics. I have only told my husband (obviously) and my children. My cousin who I'm very close to, she was going to get the bypass, my sister whom I adopted as my daughter (she's significantly younger) and my aunt (godmother) because she had the same surgery in the 80s. My husbands family is dying to know why I was in the hospital and what I had surgery for. But if they know, it's like posting it in a nationwide newspaper. And considering how awful they were to an in law of mine (there own family) they would be worse. When my 7yr old had skull surgery at 6months old, first they tried to blame me for her having saggital synotosis and then half of them pretty much disowned me and our daughter for allowing her to have the surgery. Yet she's healthy normal and fine. Same crap happened with my 14yr old when I let her have surgery to remove a horrific bunion that became worse when she went on a growth spurt last year. Considering I've not always been heavy and I've lost weight, significant weight in the past, I don't think it'll bring anything of it. However, I have only told the same select people about other surgeries like hysterectomy, laproscopic endometrial tissue removal, etc. I'm an extremely private person and I don't tell many people things cause frankly, it's not their business. Plus, I don't need to hear anyone's opinions or thoughts. Self esteem is low enough right now. I have my husbands and children's support and my fathers families support. (Can't tell mothers side they are just as bad as in laws). That's all the support I need. Maybe if the gossipers didn't talk crap and gossip they would be in the loop, but they get what they deserve (to be out of the loop).

  7. Are you using insurance? If so that it's deemed as medically necessary, and as a law student, last time I checked, employers cannot discriminate based in health. I would contact the eoea and file some Fmla paperwork.
  8. I'm not hungry either. I have to be reminded to eat. Not even food smells good at all. My daughters made a turkey an Swiss on rye last night and I thought the smell would make me feel bad but I didn't smell it. They made some rice pilaf this afternoon too and I didn't miss that either. I do hope to enjoy some foods again and eat normally (just less) some day. I'm down from 230.4 surgery day to 216 today. I'm in a very deep ketosis.
  9. You can always have your scripts compounded into liquid and flavored :-) I've done that with all mine and the ones that are not compounded I crush and pour down my throat followed by broth or protein shake.

Soft foods & liquids cause nausea

Try Dicyclomine, it's an intestinal cramping and abdominal pain reducer. I first received the prescription last year to pull me out of my IBS attacks. I've had nausea and vomiting since day of surgery (May 21st) Out of desperation last night finally, I decided to empty a capsule into an oz of water. If it didn't work I was going to take myself to the hospital. I'm only 5 days post op (including op day). I'm only doing water, broth, protein shakes and jello. Anyways, within 15 minutes my pain was gone. I was feeling nauseated, bloated, gassy, and a lot of pressure. All day today I've been putting half a capsule into an oz of water or broth to keep the pain almost non existent. My body is hypersensitive to any changes but that miserable feeling had my daughters 7,14 scared to death last night and then this morning when I woke up. It works, ask your surgeon or pcp for it. It's way better then ondansterdon (zofran)

Items that Swell in your Stomach?

Also, sugars are hidden (such as aspartamene in the sugar free jello which can cause swelling). There are good food calculators that give full and inflammation factors, things like lactose, sucrose (sp?) all that kind of stuff. My doctor told me to keep foods easy to digest at hand and nothing with skins, peals, etc.

From what I see, it looks like non whole grain bread is the problem (Cibatta is flour and not good for you) popcorn is a grain, and since our bodies cannot digest corn it's likely they cannot digest popcorn. I'm 4 days post op and I haven't stopped feeling bloated or gassy . Nurses and doctors said its normal. Sure is uncomfortable and all I've had is Water, broth, Atkins shakes and Jello. I can't even hold the full 3 Ozs like the reccomended amount. I'm barely at 1.5
  14. Any tips I can help provide. Drink water and produce urine. Make sure you get the urine in the catcher that is in the toilet. I just got home late last night from my Tuesday sleeve. Get up and walk around as much as possible. Shower as soon as possible. Bring some chapstick and biotin dry mouth gum, music and something comforting from home. I didn't need slippers, nor did I pack them. I used the booties they gave me. Know your allergies and be firm with the nursing staff. For example, I am allergic to cicillians, and I can only take sulfates (antibiotics) the anastheiaologist gave me a cicillian anyways. I was in an alergic reaction as I was exiting the operation area. I pulled out of it. Later on that night my nurse tried to give me some again, I told her no i'm allergic, she said "well you already had some" and I said "yes and I had an allergic reaction".. The lady put it through my IV anyways, it didn't take 5 minutes for allergic reaction to kick in. These nurses assume that hives and itching are the only symptom of an allergic reaction. Also, use your pain meds. I didn't, but it would have helped significantly. When I did use them, it was better. Keep ice on your manipulation site, that will be the most painful location of the 5 incisions. Even once you are home, keep ice on it. Also, expect nausea and vomitting the first day or two. Doctor said people who get nausea and vomitting lose the most weight. I had my surgery Tuesday at 8am. I am already down 11 lbs and that is not including inches. It is already very obvious that i've had weight loss.
  15. Just had surgery yesterday. Ouch! I went through a few hours of wondering why did I do this to myself. Today is much better then yesterday. I have a huge bruise in the manipulation incision where my stomach was removed. 5 total incisions. I didn't have a problem with the gas fortunately, but because I have had severe nausea and vomiting I am still in the hospi. Probably won't be released until tomorrow evening or Friday morning. Energy levels come and go. Not really hungry. On a clear liquid diet which consists of chicken broth, jello, juice and ice cubes. I made some tea. They introduced a Glucerna shake today. I haven't eaten but more than 2 ounces total for each meal, and I've only had 3 meals. Eating ice cubes between meals helps a lot. Hospital is not bad. I am able to get a lot of rest. My family spent all day yesterday here with me. I think I will be dropping my campus classes though. Sitting is most painful, standing is least painful. I don't think I over packed or under packed. I would suggest bringing some Biotin dry mouth gum, and rinse as well as chap stick. It helps a lot. The nurses said they are going to advise future patients to bring the Biotin dry mouth gum/rinse, as all the anesthesia and narcotic makes the dry mouth worse, so it leave the patient constantly looking for something wet.. Keep ice on your manipulation incision wound. I can't wait to go home to my comfy bed and home. I see a few people mention they have room-mates, I am sorry for that. At my hospi, we have private suites. Which is very nice. I am a blood clotter so I have to take lovanox, but also I have to keep these things on my calves and ankles that puff up and help circulation. They feel like a massage on the ankles and calves. I didn't sleep well last night, so I have been extremely tired today. Earlier finally I just put my chill step music on, closed the blinds, hit my Ativan and Dilaudid and went to sleep for a few hours. Extremely peaceful and quiet!
  16. I'm on the pre-op diet, and I don't know that this will work for post-op but if you put your protein shake or powder/milk in the blender with ice it gives you more fluid intake and more substance so you will feel fuller. If I drink just the protein alone it doesn't fill me up. If I add ice and blend it, I feel like I'm drinking a milk shake.
  17. I'm liking these ideas of baking extracts, but can I ask where these are being purchased? Around here, there is alcohol in true baking extracts. The knock off extracts have sugar.
  18. Hi, I have been seen a bit of talk about dry mouth. I currently use Biotin Dry mouth gum, and Biotin Dry mouth rinse. They help increase saliva, prevent dry mouth from medication (thus resulting in fewer cavities) and provide immediate, long lasting relief. I have my date for May 21st. Glad to see all these lists here.
  19. I finally have a date! The gal took responsibility and resolved the problem! I am going in May 21st. First class for school starts May 20th, but I got my teacher to agree to my absence from May 21st to May 23rd! Husband just scheduled days off. My daughters are excited. Good Morning and THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! times how ever many exclamation marks are there. At first when you told me you were sending the appeal, I didn't remember sending it (likely out of excitement). But then I was looking through my email for something else and saw that email. It shows the attachment on my sent email. I have 3 anti-viral programs that occasionally strip attachments, but I've only ever seen that to other .edu emails. So if that's the case I will get with IT and tell them what's going on. since it shows attached in the send. Either way THANK YOU FROM ALL OF MY HEART (I'm pretending I'm doing back flips like a Dolphin at SeaWorld) I've told my husband so he's good there, and I will communicate with my instructor next. I don't believe this needs to be escalated up at all. :-) Thanks, Lani REACH - Respect, Excellence, Authenticity, Curiosity, Hard Work From: blank [blank@coloradosurgical.com] Sent: Monday, May 13, 2013 9:21 AM To: blank(blank@uccs.edu) Subject: RE: URGENT PLEASE READ ASAP FW: Clearence for surgery I have you on for surgery for the 21st. Go ahead and start the 10 day diet tomorrow. I do apologize for all of the confusion and the appeal. I looked back at the email and it didn’t have an attachment. I was not able to clear this with him before today so I couldn’t verify the 21st surgery date before this morning. On the 20th we are going to combine your H&P with the review appointment so you will need to see Dr. Fedorak here first in the office and then we will send you downstairs for labs. The hospital may call you to register you prior to that day and the call will come from central scheduling. If you have any questions please let me know. I again apologize as I know your time is valuable. blank
  20. At Whole Foods, there are organic baby foods that have no sugar added. You can add a compounded multi vitamin, liquid b-vits, liquid calcium and protein powder. For iron, if you brown the protein powder on a cast iron skillet first, it will absorb the iron into the powder. Though I've not had my surgery yet, I have cleared this with my physician.

    Hair loss... My story

Hi! I have a hair question/comment. In Jan 2011 I was diagnosed with having Telegen Effluvium and Alopecia. Since then I have been seeing a dermatologist who has me on steroidal foams/liquids for my scalpe, special shampoo and mens extra strenght Rogain. When I first saw her I had noticibal bald spots. Now, I have a full think head of hair. I also have to use Latisse on my eyelashes and eyebrows. She also has be taking the flax seed oil and 2,500 mcg Biotin for my hair. I hear about the hair loss a lot, and I am just wondering if the fact that I am on mens rogain (theortically my hair should only disappear with the cessation of Rogain) still might result in my losing my hair? I have not had the surgery yet. I am in limbo land trying to get it scheduled.
