GERD- Does it get worse?
GreekGirl replied to LisaD's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was taking an over the counter prior to surgery. In the hospital the doctor started me on a prescription to take every day for the first 30 days. I have not had it at all in 7 weeks (knock on wood!). It has been much better. I am sure the fact I was eating all the wrong things before but prior to surgery I would get it the worse when I was not eating. Definitely much better now for me. -
Totally understand what you are feeling. I felt the same way before. Prior to surgery I usually did not eat because of hunger but out of habit and because I loved food! It just kind of works out. Right after surgery you cannot eat and then as time goes on you retrain yourself. It is kind of like being on a diet eating small portions where before you would be starving and now you are not. Not sure how you change the habits as I never thought I could but has not been bad at all. My new saying is old dogs "can" learn new tricks!

Breaking out & dry patches
GreekGirl replied to WillInAtlanta's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I did. I swear I think it was from the anesthesia. I asked the doc and he said no but I had never had that before. Very itchy but it eventually subsided. -
Thanks for the info. What is the exact brand and where did you get it? Do you know how many calories it has per serving? I am doing the already made shakes and would like one with more protein but have to watch my calories.

I was sleeved on April 23 and can still barely see on my thigh. They are probably from the blood thinner shot they give you. Mine were in the thigh but have seen some get them in the abdomen...

Hi Denise, We had our surgery very close to each other. Mine was April 23. So neat you were at Shelby. I really liked Dr. Christopher so much! I have not been to a support group meeting but would really love to try and make one. Are they helpful?

Do we ever get used to eatting so little?
GreekGirl replied to VickysVictory's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Making into really small pieces really helps me. I can stretch my dinner out to my husbands. For example, I cut 4 adult bites of chicken into about twenty. Sounds crazy but it makes me feel like I am eating a lot more than I actually am and I think has helped me get used to the small portions. It kinds of cracks me up because my plate looks like a babies with baby bites! -
Congrats on taking the first step! You are young and I bet you will do great!

Forgot to say, I started feeling normal after about 3-4 weeks.

Toasted bread was one of the things on my doctors list so I did a toasted piece of pita bread with hummus literally for lunch for two weeks! I got some mini wheat pita's at whole foods and they were perfect. Along with the "cedar's hummus"

Surgery Date, Thursday, May 30, 2013
GreekGirl replied to theresainmpls's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck with your surgery! You will be done and on your way to recovery before you know it!!! -
Totally understand. So good to find out all you can. I actually tried walking on the treadmill the second week and I think it was a mistake. Stopped and just started back this week in my 4th week. Started with 20 minutes, then 25 the next day and so on. In the beginning you are weak from not much food. Trying to fight being tired now. Thinking about getting some b12 shots for energy. Your date will be here before you know it. So exciting!!

No but my dream is jeans and shorts which is something I will not do now. When I had my surgery I told my husband if I freaked out before surgery or changed my mind to whisper "jeans and shorts" in my ear!!

Thank you! I did not have much pain at all until about 1-2 weeks out then I started more pain. Amazingly at about 3 weeks out I started feeling so much better. Each day from then has gotten better and better. I think I pushed it a little too fast at first. Had surgery on Tuesday and went back to work on the following Monday. I probably should have taken two weeks off but one week is doable. Now at four weeks I am feeling so much better.

Soft food stage-- any suggestions?
GreekGirl replied to Stef_L's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
One of my favorites was cottage cheese with mashed banana. -
I had a lot of bruising too. They give you blood thinner and I think that helps you bruise easily.
-
I am four weeks too! For snacks I have been eating WW cheese sticks, hummus, watermelon or protein shake.

I am in Bham and had my surgery with Dr. Christopher at Shelby on April 23. Down 27 pounds! Finally healing and feeling better.

Yes, if it was not for "gross misconduct" they should offer. As long as there are about 20 or more on your company's group plan. They have about two weeks to offer and you have 60 days to elect the coverage. -

You should be able to elect COBRA and there will be no break in your coverage. It can be expensive but worth it for the surgery! Good luck! -
I really hope this makes you feel better but I had the same thing. I did great the first week and went back to work at the beginning of my second week. My suregery was 4/23/13. During my second week I started hurting so bad. It was really bad when I would first stand up. Not isolated to one part. On my left side and back. The option my doctor gave was for a CT scan to see if anything was wrong or to allow the swelling to go down. I think I really overdid it my first week or two. Just this week I started to feel a lot better and have been super cautious with every movement. Hope you feel better. My fear that something was wrong was making it even worse.

The paid is not terrible. All pain meds I got in the hospital were by IV even my last dose before I went home. When I came home they gave me liquid lortab. I have not had to take it at all. I did take ambien so that does the trick for sleeping now that I am home. I am just a few days out but really nothing other than ordinary pain.
