    The "Pre-Surgery" Talk/Advice

I was lucky. I didn't have too many negative comments. But when I did, it was one of two reactions. I was met with dead silence or the dreaded "oh" in response to mentioning my decision. In that case, I just dropped the subject because I knew they weren't going to be supportive no matter what. Then there was the "Know it all". Had all the answers, advice, etc. In that case, I just politely let them I did my homework and researched it a great deal. I know there will be some that no matter what you say, they just keep going on and on. Just ignore them and keep on going! Best of luck to you!

    Looking for something....

Hi Angel, I didn't come to a quick decision about the surgery. I had been doing Weight Watchers and had lost 70lbs. and then just seemed to get stuck there (thank God I was able to keep that off). I was researching and came upon this site. I got lots a great info on this site, but still, I wasn't sure. It's a huge decision. I then had a Dr. appt that required follow-up lab work. Two weeks later was my follow-up appt. I had lost 10 lbs. in those two weeks, and was sure my Dr was going to applaud me. Well, to my surprise, not only did she not mention my weight loss, but she said she thought I should have WLS! I have Kaiser, so we have this 12 week Options classes we have to take before anything else. I told her I really wanted to try it on my own, but I'd go through the classes and have an open mind. I finished the classes in early Dec. 2012 and I still was on the fence! I kept putting off the calls to meet w/ surgeon. I finally met with the surgeon on Jan 18th. He seemed like a great guy, great record, I asked tons of questions, and still, wasn't sure! I kept getting calls to schedule the surgery, I told them I was thinking about it. Well, to make a long story short (too late, I know ) I spent the next 3 months really discerning my options, praying a lot and I came up with the decision to go ahead with the surgery. I was met with some negative comments, but that didn't deter me. I had my surgery on June 4th and even though it is not long after, I think it was the best decision i ever made. The surgery is a tool to help you lose weight. You still have to do the work, it just makes it easier. I find that I can barely eat anything and I am full. That, alone, was worth it! You have to make this decision for yourself, but always know, there are people here who are kind and supportive. You can ask anything and you will get answers. i will keep you in my prayers as you embark on your decsion making process. Best of luck to you!

    Loving my new Foodsaver!

What a great idea! Do you mind sharing the brand, etc. you decided on?
  6. Too awesome! I'm so happy for you. Your dad sounds like a kick! It's funny, I was thinking of my dad yesterday, wishing he could see my journey (I lost him a few years ago). But then I realized he is seeing my journey and is with me all the way in spirit! Keep up the great work and keep us posted!

    June 2013 Sleevers GROUP

I read a tip on this board. Freeze diet 7-up in ice cube tray (freezing process removes the carbonation). They are supposed to help with nausea. I'm sorry I can't vouch that it works because I was lucky not to have nausea, but I have been putting the cubes in my water and crystal light. Hope you feel better soon.

    Side sleepers?

The first night home I didn't sleep a wink because I kept rolling to my side and could not get comfortable. The second night home I sort of rolled up a pillow on the side of me and then rolled onto it to cushion my tummy. I was in heaven! I almost cried, I was so grateful I could actually get some sleep. From then on, it was a piece of cake. Good luck!

Lol. Yeah. I feel tired after I eat. It's getting better every day. I think it's because it takes me so darn long to eat anything!
  11. P.S. That just hurts thinking about the triscuits going down! Ouch!!
  12. I will hit my 2 weeks on Tues and I can have soft foods then. Chili sounds sooo good! It's funny, but I have been living on the Progressive Lentil soup with no problem. Although I still have to pulverize it, maybe that makes a difference. I am so looking forward to be able to CHEW on something!

    feeling anxiety

I know what you mean. I am so ready to CHEW on something! I will be at 2 weeks on Tues when I can have soft foods. I'm so excited for that. String cheese, veggie patty, veggies and fruit, here I come! Being tired of all the liquids is completely normal. Don't beat yourself up. It's only a few days and then it will be over and you will on your way to your new life! Congratulations and best of luck to you.
  14. I never had any issues prior to surgery. I came home from hospital with RX for Prilosec 1x day. I did have insane heartburn the 1st 4 days. My RN told me that the Isopure protein drink is a major cause of heartburn. So just be prepared if you are going to use that the first few days. After I got onto full liquids, I could take my regular protein powder drink and it has significantly subsided to almost nothing. I just had my first post-op appt with surgeon and he did mention the conversion to full bypass. He said in all his surgerys only 2 did he have to convert to bypass. But he ok'd me to take the prilosec 2x day if needed, but so far I have not. Best of luck to you.
  15. Amazing job! Keep up the great work. You are beautiful-even before surgery!

What to look for in protein drinks?

My Registered Dietician said the numbers to look for are at least 25g of protein, 5g or less sugar and 3g or less total fat. I just use Pure Protein, both Vanilla cream and chocolate. They have them at Sam's club or Costco, but I actually found them cheaper at Ralphs grocery store ($19 vs $24). Hope this helps.

I'm kinda bored, too. I've been eating cream of wheat, protein shakes, greek yogurt (plain)-yuck! Taste like I'm eating sour cream. Lol. I need to try to add something to it! I've also been having soup a lot. Sounds weird in this SoCal heat wave. But it tastes so good. I just use the emersion blender to make it very smooth. I'm also starting to make smoothies. 1c. soy/almond milk, 1c. frozen fruit, 2 packets of Splenda and a few ice cubes. Blend until smooth. It makes a lot, though. Still not used to the downsized portions! So I just have some and freeze the rest for later. Take it out 1/2hour or so before you want it. Hope it helps. Best of luck to you!

    Bread substitute

Thanks for the info! I am a breadaholic! I will try this a little down the line. I'm not even on soft foods yet. How much psyllium do we use, if we choose to put it in? Thanks so much!
  21. Awesome job! I had my first appt with surgeon post-op today, too. I was sleeved June 4th and I lost 14 lbs. It's still hard to believe. Best of luck to you on your journey!

How's everyone doing? We're, what, on day 9. Wow. Time flies. I'm still on full liquids until Tues. Then soft foods til day 30. Then I can introduce regular food, one at a time. I can't believe it takes me 30 min. to eat 1/4 c. of cream of wheat! Never thought that would happen!! Lol! I hope everyone's recovery has been smooth and speedy. I feel very blessed to be on this wonderful journey!

    Already sleeved JUNE-bees!

I first got on the scale 2-3 days after surgery. I couldn't resist! Much to my surprise I had GAINED 4 lbs. What the heck??!!? I got on the scale again today, 8 days post-op, and am down 13lbs! I go tomorrow for my first post-op with the surgeon, so we'll see what their scale says.
  24. You poor thing! My heart goes out to you. I wish I could give some brilliant advice, but I didn't have that problem. I have read others on this board who did, maybe they can reassure you it will get better. In the meantime, just have faith in your Dr. He sounds like a smart guy, if he didn't wan't to send you home only to return to the ER. Are they giving you anything for the nausea? Best of luck to you.

    Sipping liquids

Lol! I so understand how you feel! I'm a chugger, too! I'm only a week post-op and can already tell the difference. I can take in more, now. But I'm still really nervous about doing too much, so I don't over do it. I mean it takes me 30 min. to eat 1/4 cup of cream of wheat! That was normally 2 bites. As far as liquids, my RN told me 4-6oz. an hour. I know I have gone over that (not by a lot) and had no issues. Best of luck to you!
