    My feelings got hurt Tonight

That's a rotten experience but one day you are going to wet yourself laughing about him... And he will never ever be able to. Next time tip a drink over his man titties and tell him you are soooo disappointed at what you see, but you have a few male friends who like wet t-shirt contests and you'll pass his name on. Then leave. Don't subject yourself to that abuse. The bloke doesn't deserve air time - he's an oxygen thief. !

    Attention ! Australian Sleevers

I have never lost hair but then I'm not achieving the amazing weight loss rates that some on this thread are. I lost 20 kg really quickly (over 2 months) and since then it's been a trickle down, occasional regain for another 2 kg over around 3 months. I have another 10kg to lose. I seem to need to eat less than 800 cal to actually lose weight - I rarely eat more than 1100 and mostly in the 800 to 900 range. I think my thyroid is "off" again - my hair (and there's lots of it) is so dry it could snap, my skin is dry and my concentration, insomnia and fatigue is shocking. I'm doing a coursework Masters at present and really noticing it. Shall get to the doc in a few weeks when I have time (I know, daft to wait). Have to confess though, I'm sitting here having a little glass of wine and enjoying a study break. Oh dear, the words "own worst enemy" are going through my mind.
  3. Reflux can really make me want to eat, to ease the burning, and it can often seem like hunger to me.
  4. Sounds like a rort to me, but as others have said 6 months will fly by. Appeal but don't get hooked in too much. Did you ask the psych why she's declining you given the positive statements in the report? You need to be clear about what she needs to see change before she approves. "Doing time" with a psych is a rort and if that's the response you get - and I'd try to get it in writing - it might help your appeal. If she specifies things that make sense to you and your GP or second opinion doctor, then that would be good. But if not.... More info for the appeal.

    The flexible "like" button...

Reading this forum is like watching an episode of Seinfield... in TXT. A whole lot of words about.... what was it about again ??? Touché

Gamergirl we've had this conversation before... Your thyroid really doesn't sound like it is operating properly. It could be another hormone too if you are entering menopause, but sounds an awful lot like hypothyroidism - incompletely treated - to me.
  7. Try searching on "regrets", "complications" and "failure" and you'll get a good range of responses that show the less talked about outcomes of being sleeved. The Vets forum is not one we can post in, but reading it is worthwhile. People don't keep on posting for years to say "everything is easy still". Poster Lauraven is always worth reading and starts and contributes to the more interesting discussions, but there are others too. Good luck with it all.

Month half out w left shoulder pain

I agree with nyorker. My dr said to watch for leak symptoms for 6 weeks.
  9. I know people are not saying we just gloss over Rox's death, but I feel I really need to speak up here. This is not a simple thing. Remember.... If someone dies in a car accident there is a police investigation at least Sensible people take precautions - we don't choose to drive cars we know are 'an accident waiting to happen' or to be a passenger with an appalling driver, and (most of us) drive to the prevailing conditions... slow down in the riskier rain, stay home in a cyclone Governments take precautions - we have road rules, safety standards on cars, driving tests and traffic cops We are all shocked and devastated when someone we love or even just know dies. It often causes us to reevaluate our priorities. None of us just hop in the car to go to work each day without a reasonable expectation that we'll survive that trip... and we have reasons to hold that expectation (for some of the reasons above). Sure, it's not a guarantee of survival, but it's not a laissez faire attitude to the whole thing either. A death during an operation such as this is tragic and quite possibly preventable. We owe it to those who have died while trying to implement their hopes for a long and healthy life to NOT quietly accept these deaths or shrug them off as statistics.
  10. I've found laser terrific for chin and upper lip - only about $10 for chin. Not permanent but huge improvement with both finer hairs and less frequent re growth over a short period of time. And its very quick - 5 mins and you're on your on your say. But don't wait too long - I'm in my 50s and some of those chin hairs are now turning white - you need dark hair to laser. And my skin is quite fragile (ageing) so plucking - that makes hairs coarser - causes me to end up with nasty lumps and scabs from ingrown hairs that irritate for a long time before they break the skin surface. Really yuk.
  11. EDIT: I'm deleting my comments as I've just seen that you only wanted to connect with people who feel like you do. Good luck with it all. Susan.

    Nothing tastes different.

No, kangaroo doesn't taste like chicken... crocodile tastes like chicken! But you can't buy croc in the supermarket, and Roo is widely available. Sadly is most often used for pet meat, but you can buy roasts, mince, sausages and steaks for humans too... it's a beautiful meat, incredibly lean and tastes like venison (deer), in my experience. In our Water deprived country it makes so much sense to eat more of it, as kangaroos require very little water while cows require heaps. But we remain a beef and chicken loving country... amongst our friends few people ever eat it. Like venison, for many its a bit like eating Bambi. Except there are soooo many roos... I read recently they are the largest "herd" in the world, at 53 million. There are only 20 million people in Australia! We're a big country (many Americans don't realise our land mass is as big as mainland USA), but we nearly all live within 100 km of the East Coast. Just a whacking great desert - with loads of roos - over most of the country. There you go, a nice little Geography lesson for today. Now, I'd love to hear about where you live...

    Attn Sydney Sleevers!

I just wrote a long message and my system froze up when I tried to post it. I don't have time to post it all again now but the gist was I'm thinking of you, it gets easier every day, and can we catch up for lunch in the city at the end of this month or beginning of Oct?? Take care of yourself and keep in touch Susan.
  16. Chez, re your other question - it has been easier for me living with the sleeve than without it. I am losing weight and feeling better every day, my eating is under control. I must say I have had a problem free surgery and recovery - I don't take that for granted and am sure that's part of why I feel the way I do about the sleeve. Everyone's journey is different and if you want a "warts and all" look at post sleeve life you can search these threads on "regrets" and "complications"... but that won't tell you what your experience will be like either. I have no regrets and it seems most on here don't. But then if you do, you probably wouldn't hang around on a forum like this. Good luck with your decision. PS: I'm from Sydney, but my sister lives out Berwick way and I really love the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Does that make it ok that I posted???
  17. Chez, search this for a good thread re one of your questions: Why did you choose vsg over other wls?

    Attn Sydney Sleevers!

Hi there. I'm hoping you've now found the Aussie Sleevers thread, where most of us seem to congregate. If not just search for it. I had my op at end of April, also with Craig Taylor at Mater - I think he's great and love that he gave such good post op care. There are posts here of people having this op as outpatient surgery... It can be a big op. People do die from it occasionally, and some have severe complications. I felt in pretty safe hands. I haven't found a Sydney support group but would love to hear if you have. The O Clinic can probably direct us to one. Or we can form our own! I started at 103.5, now 82.5 and aiming for 72. Losing 20% of your body weight really does make a huge difference, even though I'm still overweight (but no longer obese, yay!). I lost most of my weight in the first 2 months and have been crawling through a kilo and a half for the last 2 months. Frustrating to the max. PM me if you want to catch up "in person". I live and work in North Ryde/Macquarie Park area.

    Nothing tastes different.

Nothing has changed in taste for me but last night I was cutting kangaroo steaks into stir fry strips and found myself positively wretching - Roo is like game/venison - v dark red, quite strong in flavour and fantastically lean - and usually I love it. I had to make a soup for myself - just couldn't bear the thought of eating it. If only this would happen with cheese, cream, cake or grapes... the things I crave.

    What was your breaking point?

Both my parents died before the age of 60 - they knew none of their grandchildren and would have been terrific grandparents. One had cancer and the other heart disease. Both were overweight but not morbidly so. Earlier this year, aged 52, I realised I was heavier than they were, had survived cancer once and am under investigation for another, my cholesterol was/is high, I have sleep apnoea and use a CPAP, have bad reflux and my joints were breaking down under my growing weight. I looked far more likely to die young than my parents ever did - and I'd spent my life trying to eat healthy (though i was hungry all the time and my portions were too large) and exercise (mainly walking, but a lot of it). A friend decided to get the lapband and that made me take a serious look at WLS. So far 20+ kg lighter, able to exercise more as my joints don't hurt as much and reflux doesn't make me cough constantly, as it used to. My sleep apnoea is improving and I'm looking forward to seeing some improvements in my blood work. No regrets.

Blue Shield Denial - so upset

I really feel for you - health insurance doesn't work this way in Australia (if your specialist surgeon or physician says you need a procedure that is the end of the discussion, your health insurance either covers that procedure for everyone or doesn't), but perhaps we pay more for insurance. At the best of times US insurance companies sound pretty mean to my Aussie ears. In this instance the OP has a high BMI and serious co-morbidities, and is the mother of a young child. She seems an appropriate candidate for this surgery, but even more so her health is being endangered by the insurance company arbitrarily withholding medical care for her. Don't these companies have any liability if something happens to a patient while jumping through the insurance company's hoops? Esp as the patients PCP and surgeon have both recommended this surgery for her??? Appeal, appeal, appeal just has to be the answer - and while doing so follow their silly procedures but keep pointing out the risks you are being needlessly exposed to. Go to the local papers and lay out your story just as you have here. Surely people would be up in arms about this sort of stuff. Wouldn't they???

    Starving all of the time!

I just had another thought too... Not in place of my previous one but in addition to it... Some people say that their reflux symptoms can feel like hunger for a while. If you're not on anti-reflux meds it would be worth it to try some for a while. Persistent reflux will certainly make you feel like cr@p.
