VSG long-term results study has positive results
Sydney Susan replied to mistysj's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The stuff about vitamin deficiencies and anaemia is good to know - best get regular checks. -
One shot of what? Alcohol? Not wise on any diet but no worse for sleeve, I'd have thought. I had wine pre 7 weeks without hassle. Heroin? Yes, of course it would be wrong. That stuff can kill you, not to mention the hazards of needle sharing. A semi automatic rifle? Would depend on what you're shooting at. Does it shoot back?

I took quite a large pill from day 2 with minimal water. No problems. And I have the most conservative doctor - other than meds we were nil by mouth till the 5th day.

It's only been a few days and this is a BIG surgery. Be patient and all will come good. With my dr you'd only have been getting out of hospital today, and until this morning were nil by mouth with a drip. Only small amounts of clear liquids starting today. Lots of drs are more adventurous than mine, but I felt his pace was perfect for me. Hope that puts it perspective a bit. Good luck.

While we're on this topic can we have a quiet chat about they're (they are), there (a place or direction), their (belonging to a person), where (a place or time), we're (we are) and were (reference to a past tense event). That's all I'm saying.

Controversial - The evaluation of before and after. Healthier by definition, but does everyone who is VSG'd really 'look' better?

Personally I don't think I'd go to the expense, risk and effort of VSG just to look "thin", but I'm 52 so have long given up on supermodel looks. For me it was all about serious co-morbidities and reduced mobility (joint problems), so even if I'd lost my hair, turned grey and looked like I had tapeworms, it would still be in my best interests to have the surgery. And you don't have to lose weight very fast - some of those who do are eating v v low calories. I am eating about 1000 cal per day, losing consistently but slowly relative to many on this forum, and in far better health than I had been for years before the surgery. And so far I've had nothing but compliments! -
Surgeon talked more about lap band!
Sydney Susan replied to bigbeauty78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had quite bad GERD before being sleeved. Still have it now but it was immediately better after the surgery - I halved my medication. See another doctor. Even if its hard in the short term, it will be worth it in the long run. -
5 years post op- total honesty
Sydney Susan replied to kesleea1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Many thanks to the OP for taking the time to write this post. I'm 3 months post op and going through a pitifully slow weight loss period, studying and not getting enough exercise. It's occurred to me recently that my tolerance for calories has, if anything, reduced significantly post op. I seem to gain if I go over 1200 calories, which is not a lot!! And my "head" seems to have discovered hunger again - too much sitting still time while studying! So yes, the sleeve is a big help but I realise I'm by no means in "plain sailing" territory now - and never will be. Weight maintenance has always been hard and I think it always will be. Hopefully though losing a lot of weight in the first 6 months (as we tend to do) AND now knowing I can never rest around food, will get me healthy and keep me that way. I can't believe the difference 20kg has made to my health and sense of well being (nearly 20% of my starting weight) - 10 kg more to go, and then 30kg to keep at bay for years and years and years. It's good to go into this with our eyes wide open. -
I took quite large capsules just fine from the second or third day post op, and nexium is small and smooth so goes down easily. Minimal water, nice smooth action, don't force it down. Never had one come up or get stuck - not once. Good luck.

This thread is making me want to eat popcorn. And look out for Charlton Heston in a frock. Seriously people, couldn't you have a deep and meaningful about something less controversial. Politics or universal health care, perhaps?

Could be a prolapsed bladder or similar... Again, need to get a medical check up.

ok... scale has stopped moving.
Sydney Susan replied to Gwendallyn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it would be a big ask of our bodies to sustain that sort of weight loss continuously. I'm just a couple of days over 3 months post op and have had several short periods of stalling and even twice regained a little weight - and I'm post menopausal so can't blame Fluid and hormones! Always comes right in the end. Post sleeve we eat such ridiculously low calories, ( are you tracking your food so sure of your calorie intake?) that you WILL eventually continue to lose weight. Either than or you're a medical miracle! -
I've been very naughty.....
Sydney Susan replied to ISleevedIt's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Great news Isleevedit! You must feel like you're walking on air. My liver lesions still causing great consternation... As in, drs can't figure out what they are. I'm well so I'm just getting on with life, and another round of scans in 3 months to see if there's change. Yes, turning 50 is definately the cause! Shame the alternative is so unpalatable... -
Scewed Perceptions?
Sydney Susan replied to Mindful's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mindful, analysing why people got defensive/annoyed and whether you should have said what you did or not is probably not a fruitful exercise. The truth is you said x about y and the result was z. It probably always will be. It's not right or wrong it just "is". Perhaps some privately thought about what you wrote and changed behaviour... who knows? If that was your intention then may be you'll feel it was worthwhile and repeat the process, but don't expect the outcome on the forum to be any different. -
Anyone hear about a Mexico Bariatric Center patient passing away this weekend?
Sydney Susan replied to Michele in NY's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I'm a fan of more info, not less. Obviously I'd prefer it if everyone has high morale standards and inner peace, so only the balanced truth was shared - but this is life and things get messy. We all need to do our own research and this forum should only be a small part of that. -

I use Nature's Way Instant Natural Protein Powder (green and white plastic tub). I've found it in Woolies but also online. Very acceptable way to add protein to soft foods, soups, purées etc. -
Had my Endoscopy Friday..
Sydney Susan replied to hopeliveshere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Was the endoscopy routine or for a specific purpose? I notice a lot of people seem to have one, and it certainly wasn't part of my pre-op process. -

Camellia, is that the Vita Gummies? I bought some for the kids and have been into the jar myself... very sweet. I'd been wondering myself if it was all too good to be true. -
Painful Lump Where IV Was Inserted
Sydney Susan replied to Canary Diamond's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had it for 2 weeks, not 4. Sounds like an infection... Best to get it checked. -
Hate to be the little black cloud, but I had similar symptoms just before my diagnosis with cervical cancer - adenocarcinoma not squamous cell (so can't be detected till advanced). Worthwhile checking with your doctor.

I've had quite a few bouts of dizziness of late (12 weeks post op) and wondered if my bp has dropped along with my weight. It's especially bad if I stand up quickly, and I've fallen badly once and nearly fallen loads of times. Covered in bruises at the moment as I keep toppling into things. And it's winter DownUnder - an unusually warm winter for sure, but I'm definately not overheated. Of course it could be an inner ear infection... You've spurred me to go to my GP about it.

I have a very personal question!

These are really complex issues. Counselling would be in order for both of you, together and separately. If he won't, you can do it alone. You've really changed "the script" of your relationship. Things can escalate when someone does that in a manipulative relationship. I don't think there are any magic words anyone can give you that will change your husband's attitudes. Stay safe and get support. Good luck.
-
It's not about the calories... more complex than that. Most pre op diets are ketosis diets (high protein, low carb) to help mobilise fat out of your liver, and so shrink it. Alcohol will take you out of ketosis and it will take a couple of days to get back in. Precious time lost pre-op. it's a bummer, but I wouldn't do it.
