How long was your pre-op diet?
JShaw replied to need2bthin!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was one week - protein shakes, jello, broth, and sugar free popsicles. Not terribly bad since I have experience with liquid diets (Medifast). Every doctor is different. -
I will be honest. The first week I was a HOT AS* MESS! I cried at little things. My kids would draw me a picture and I would cry. I have never, ever been this emotional. I have been described by a few as "frosty". So all these meds and hormones coursing through my body sent me into a tailspin. PLUS a friend reminded me that my doctor had me stop my birth control pills to lessen my chances of blood clots. HELLO! RED FLAG RED FLAG! Take a deep breath and relax. Grab a box of kleenex and let it out. It gets better. Oh and remember all those bags of IV fluid hanging in the hospital? Yeah those could be the reason for the weight gain. Just take it easy and let your body heal.

Two weeks post with burning pain under incision sometimes?
JShaw replied to BriDawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I asked my dr. about this one week out and he said they put internal stitches to close the fascia. Perhaps that is what it is. My pain was a sharp hot poker. I am almost 2 weeks out and it has lessened every day. -
My drain was on my left side and I was sent home with it. It was a ginormous pain in the arse. I took a dosage of pain med (1 oxycodone) about an hour before my dr. appt. I thank God my husband insisted on me taking it. I chatted through the whole thing. Why be in pain if you don't have to?! I am now almost 2 weeks out and if I could just get rid of this ridiculous gas bubbling around my body. ARG!

riss523 -Malt o meal, watered down oatmeal, thinned out and strained cream soup, yogurt, greek yogurt, pudding, jello. That's all I got. I added a sprinkle of flavored crystal light powder to my greek yogurt and that was really good. I also made a soup this week that I was able to drink the broth. Not at all inventive, but I am going by what the dr told me. Plus all milk and pudding I had to nix after a rather unsettling, ahem, experience.

Hey Nikkivan, it gets easier. I really struggled at first. Each day the pain is easing and it is easier to move around. Hang in there!

Funny thing, today I feel like a completely different person. Maybe I just needed the required ugly Oprah cry? Today I showered and didn't feel like taking a nap afterwards. I took the kiddos to preschool and stopped by the grocery store afterwards for a few items. Now I am tired, but not the full-body all encompassing exhaustion. I tried some milk yesterday in a greek yogurt smoothie. That was a no-go. No bueno. I have heard a few people discuss milk intolerance after stomach surgery. Baby steps, every day..

So today (7 days out) was the day that I hit that hormonal wall of crying like a lunatic. I am not used to laying around to heal. I am a ‘rub some dirt on it and keep moving' person. But today the stars aligned and I lost it. I am just so darned exhausted. I can do dishes for 5 minutes before my back is killing me. I took a nap after driving my kids to preschool. Seriously. I had a csection with twins and *never* felt this exhausted. My back has been bothering me lately, like a burning ache. Perhaps if I move a little more tomorrow I will feel better. One step at a time....

Am I doomed? (Please say no!)
JShaw replied to Kellylynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About handling a liquid diet post op- it depends on your surgeon. Mine requires 3-4 days liquid post op. That isn't bad at all. I didn't feel like eating until the 4th day. Now I am hungry often eating on the puree diet. I haven't cheated at all because the repercussions are too high- having food lodged at stomach opening or a stomach tear. No thanks. Plus, eating incorrectly is what landed me in this mess to begin with. Hang in there and be strong! -
The best way to sleep
JShaw replied to KayCTheNewMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I slept in a lazy boy for 3 days when I got home. I am now back in my bed and normally sleep on my back. My left side is still super sore. I was told that this is 100% normal since they removed it from my left side. They also mentioned there are internal stitches that haven't dissolved yet (almost 1 week out). If I shift in the night it is to my right side now. Oh and I use plenty of pillows- a body pillow under my left leg (simply because I am weird like that), one under my left arm to keep me from rolling on my left side, and one under my head. Good luck in finding what will work for you! -
Preop diet starts TOMORROW
JShaw replied to Jessiegurl2686's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first few days are spent starving, angry, and wanting to prison shank anyone. It gets better. The hunger goes away and you forget about starving and being mean. I would definitely ask your doctor about adding one lean meal a day. Two weeks is a longggg time. Hang in there! Hell have some sugar free jello or a popsicle to fill the hole. You've got this! -

JShaw replied to Jessiegurl2686's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
liquid diet is just that....a liquid diet. Pretty sure pickles are a no no because of the sodium. There is always tomorrow?! Ask your doctor if you can substitute a lean Protein (fish or chicken) and 1/2 cup veggies for one liquid shake. My doctor let my friend do that. It just depends on the doctor. -
My husband has told me exactly 6 times how goooooood the new homemade taco seasoning is. THANKS as I am eating my 3-4 tbsp of refried beans. I understand. Sometimes I just get up and leave the room. It's the easiest thing to do. Or, I grab my water and sip on it. I am 6 days out of surgery and in the 'pureed' stage and still starving. I generally have a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch (to get all the protein in) and some watered down cream soup or like tonight, refried beans. I did just realize this morning that my dachshund is eating more than I am these days. ERG!

YAHOO! I had surgery on the 23rd and just got my drain and staples out. Yippee! No seriously, walking around with a drain hanging out of your gut is a real downer. Real downer. Sucks actually. I am still having a few issues with eating - like pain and burping bubbles when I eat or drink. I am hoping these subside when I can actually regulate my protein & water intake a little better. Plus I think swelling has something to do with it. I am getting a good 50 of protein daily with 2 shakes. I try to get 48 in water, but lets be honest, water still sort of hurts going down. Especially on an empty stomach. I am getting better by carrying around my water all day and sipping every 10-20 minutes. It will get better......it will get better.....

Sneaking in here, for the the light brown spots you got with pregnancy. It's called 'mask of pregnancy' I believe, and I got a few patches on my face from my twins. Good times. I have found that Alpha Hydroxy with 10% Glycolic Acid from Ulta works really well. It is gonna burn coming on, but that is normal. It does dry your face out, so make sure to use a hydrating lotion in between applications.

Preop diet starts TOMORROW
JShaw replied to Jessiegurl2686's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do a 1 week liquid diet before - shakes, sugar free popsicles, broth, and jello. Not gonna lie. I wanted to rip someones head off the first few days. Stay strong, that only lasts 1-3 days, then the hunger goes away. Once the hunger goes away I had to remind myself to eat. Good luck! -

That is clearly her insecurities talking. Ignore it. Once she sees your success that will be revenge enough. -
I am new here too. I had my gastric sleeve on 4/23. I am now in the healing phase. I have always had problems with my weight. Its been up, down, and all around. It suddenly hit me one day- I have spent the 1st half of my life in a constant struggle with my weight. I will be darned if I spend the second half of my life struggling like that. Not one more day. I don't want my children to struggle with their weight like I have. I had to get my weight under control. I will be celebrating my 40th birthday next year as a thinner and healthier person!

Your husband surgeon will outline the diet guidelines. Each doctor is different. Mine says liquids 3-4 days after surgery, then soft solids for a couple of weeks, then regular foods. They will also recommend a list of protein shakes. It all depends on the carb and calorie count. Good luck!

I was sleeved on the 23rd and sent home on the 24th. I was still bleeding real heavily while in the hospital so the sent me home with a drain. Walking with a drain is painful and causes me to bleed more. I get the drain out on monday. Thank God. My pain meds were changed to something stronger on Thursday. I am starting soft solids today - things like malt o meal with a scoop of protein powder. I think getting some protein in my body will make a world of difference.
