Bariatric coordinator thinks RNY would be better for me. What to do?!
NMJG replied to Scylla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honey, just my opinion, but I think you need to rethink WLS completely, regardless of the method. Read here and on other boards about how many people regain weight after RNY (and lapband and sleeve, too). That is because WLS is just a tool. It won't keep you from sabatoging yourself. You need to get your head on straight before you attempt this. If you have a sugar problem, it's really best to address it beforehand. Some thoughts: Get on a low carb Atkins type diet asap and stick with it. Once you get past induction phase your need for carbs and sugar is substantially lower. You may find this is all you need. Attend counseling prior to getting surgery to deal with food issues. Understand how eating slider foods can easily disrupt and delay weight loss with WLS. Learn about addiction transferring and how some people with sugar addictions switch it to other foods/alcohol etc. and still continue to sabotage their weight loss Really understand how liquid and soft calories can cause you to stop losing and regain weight. Best of luck to you however you decide. -
When was your surgery? I had this sort of issue for 3 1/2 months after surgery. It got a little better each week and eventually went away. My doctor tested for stricture, but I did not have one. To deal with it I did the following: tiny bites take a long time to finish a meal, even longer than normal for VSG Soft foods for 4 months. Even now at 5 months I prefer softer foods. Just recently able to eat salads and vegs well. Reglan helped - doctor prescribed it. I took it on occasion and it worked well when I needed it to. Stayed away from mint, chocolate, coffee, spicy stuff and other triggers as they made the problem worse. Trigger foods are fine now. You can google for Esophageal spasm trigger foods. Good luck.

Not getting enough calories or protein!
NMJG replied to Ree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is not at all unusual to be so low in calories a month out, also, don't do the "net calories" bs from your tracker, just count real calories. However, you do need to bump your protein grams. Lots of good suggestions on here. Cottage cheese, tuna, greek yogurt, cheese sticks, eggs, soft broiled fish, heck - even a glass of milk will do the trick. Focus on fluids and protein and you'll be fine. It gets better. If you can find a protein shake that you like, even better. It is hard to get enough protein in without a shake. I like Unjury chicken broth protein drink and hemp protein mixes for a real change of pace. I keep half a dozen different protein shakes/powders in the house because I get so tired of the same ones. Good luck to you. -
It gets better, just be positive and stay strong. You are doing great. Weird stuff happens at an phase, especially so early as you are. Good luck!

Torani or Davinci Syrups........Need help!
NMJG replied to Beach Lover's topic in Food and Nutrition
Just bought a Monin's Triple Sec flavored sugar free syrup. Skinny Margaritas? LOL. I used to love an orange chocolate coffee drink i had years ago. Wonder if I could recreate it..... Coffee, Triple Sec SF syrup, Chocolate SF syrup or SF cocoa, steamed milk, top with a shake of cocoa and a grate of orange peel. Ok, now I have to have that. Leaving now. -
Joining Weight Watchers after Gastric Sleeve surgery.
NMJG replied to calicakes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Feel better soon! That's a real ouch you are going through. Hugs! For what it is worth, that seems like more food than I eat now at 5 months. I would definitely talk to your surgeon about how much food you can get down. I couldn't possibly eat an entire Lean Cuisine, maybe half. I rarely get in more than 200 calories at a meal. And just a suggestion, I would cut out the half and half and switch to low fat or skim milk while you are losing, just a thought. That half and half is about 80 calories right there. It adds up. -
Tilapia, sole, sea bass, sashimi all worked for me at 4 weeks. Lots of tuna salad too.

My surgeon won't operate because I complained
NMJG replied to greensleeve's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
no kidding. I sure as heck wouldn't want them operating on me. -
As others have said, you specifically have to get the ones that say "light" and even then check the label. Plain mixed with sugar free Torani syrup is something I like, especially plain with a touch of caramel. Just go easy with the syrup, you don't need much. My cabinet looks like a coffee bar from all the different flavors of SF Torani I have.

Good for you, SOS, you can do it!

What kind of milk to drink
NMJG replied to donaboss's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Look in the digestive aids section, like where the Tums are. -
Making some green chile stew in the crockpot tomorrow (standard winter fare here in New Mexico). Throw in a tub of Bueno hot roasted green chile, chicken, carrots and onions, and chicken broth, maybe a bay leaf and some Mexican oregano. Cook on low all day. Season to taste after cooking. Yum. Nice with some shredded white cheese sprinkled on top.

The only thing I don't LOVE about my sleeve...
NMJG replied to LipstickLady's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yeah, me too. My layer of blubber is gone. Now it's all layers of clothing trying to keep me warm. -
Strongly considering the sleeve.
NMJG replied to raegray19's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Was sleeved 5 months ago. I had a BMI of 36, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, arthritis in my hips, and knees about to give out. I was a size 20 XXL. Everything exhausted me. I'm 53 and felt every inch my age. Today I'm a BMI of 25.9 - almost normal. I wear a size 10/12. Went from 3 blood pressure meds to one. Arthritis is nearly gone and knees are great. Trigycerides and cholesterol are excellent. Blood sugar is terrific. Energy levels are excellent, can even bike and do weight training now (ok, not well, but I'm doing it lol). I'm not hot all the time. For me it was the right decision. It was very hard, this is not a walk in the park. I have had to completely change my eating habits, but I'm really ok with it. For the first time I feel like my hard work paid off and will continue to pay off if I use this wonderful tool to its full extent. I am terrified of gaining the weight back, but I feel like I have a really good chance of keeping it off for life this time, thanks to my sleeve. I'm just over 30 lbs from goal. I lose slow (be prepared for that - not everyone is a fast loser), but I couldn't be happier. I did have terrible throat issues the first 3 months, so hard to swallow, but that's gone now. Remember there is risk with this surgery. You may be the 99% that has no trouble or you may be the 1%. Prepare yourself for either case. -
Y'all, I lose maybe 2 lbs a week at 800 calories a day, and that is without cheating and getting in exercise. I know some folks who lose slower than that. Everyone loses at a different pace. Not everyone loses 100 lbs in 6 months. Don't get frustrated, just be patient, stay focused, and let your body do its thing. Benefits to losing slow: Skin has more time to adjust Clothes don't need to be replaced every few weeks People don't assume you have had WLS or are deathly ill, so it can help you avoid nosy nellies

I am into greens right now, collards, kale, mustard greens. Sauteed with olive oil and garlic, or roasted, or cooked down in a pot with some ham or bacon. Yummy.

Joining Weight Watchers after Gastric Sleeve surgery.
NMJG replied to calicakes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Cali, lots of opinions here, but I'm going to add mine. I think it is a terrible idea. You have had surgery, you are barely healed from it, you are in a stall ( which everyone goes through), and your eating habits are a world away from WW diet. All this could do is give you bad information and put you even further off track. I suggest you talk to your nut, after all, that's what they are paid for. I also think your calories are pretty high for 7 weeks. You can't be eating much at this point, which suggests that you are perhaps not making wise choices, not drinking all your water, maybe you are drinking with meals, not getting in your protein, maybe not getting in enough protein, and not eating protein first. Good luck getting back on track. Try sticking with the program you signed up for and use your doctor and his staff. -
Once a week in the morning. Otherwise I obsess over every little thing. Dinner last night, water retention, etc. can all affect daily weight. For me, weekly weighing is mentally healthier.
-
Just my $0.02 but surgery is kinda like marriage; if you have doubts just postpone it until you are sure one way or the other. Sleeve surgery isn't going away, so wait until you are sure and ready.

How much time did you research Doctors?
NMJG replied to BrandNewBrandy's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I suggest you start by calling your insurance company. I have UHC and they have a department devoted to WLS. This is all pre-approval but gets you started on the right track with doctors that your insurance will approve, provided you meet the criteria. The nurse assigned to me was very helpful and it was she who recommended I use the internet forums for research and support while I figured out what to do and who to use. My insurance required a "Center of Excellence" and in my area there were very few of those, and all were 200 or more miles away, so my choice was pretty easy, and I've been delighted with my doctor. Even though I had to travel to another state, the "Center of Excellence" lived up to its reputation. -
I signed up with a personal trainer and am starting today. My dr. suggested strength training at my 4 month checkup last month. I'm very excited. I hate exercise, but I am very motivated right now. I want to get my metabolism going again, tighten up my saggy, baggy body, and put myself in good shape for future long term success. I had my measurements taken, caliper pinching, "before" photos, etc. My trainer has 6 week cycles, so we change it up every 6 weeks and modify based on progress. Anyone else doing something similar?
