VSG: Expectations vs Reality
NMJG replied to Disabledaccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why is it that people always remember the ones who lose fast and forget the people who lose slow? LOL. Everyone loses differently. i never lost more than 2 lbs a week and I exercised from the second week on, almost daily. But I'm 53 and post menopausal female. A young woman will lose faster, a man will lose faster, pretty much everyone else loses faster. So forget about comparing yourself and just enjoy your personal journey. What really surprised me? How uncomfortable it is to overeat. How bad the first month was. How hard it was to reprogram myself to eat so much Protein and severely reduce carbs (I was a carb addict). How easy it is to eat sliders and fall back into old ways. -
Good topic. For me, the fear is still there. And honestly, I kind of hope it doesn't go away, because if I get complacent I will fail. Taking the sleeve for granted, forgetting the basic sleeve rules of eating, chowing down on sliders - these are the things that will let you fail. Why will you succeed? Because you have never had a tool as powerful as the sleeve. Because you will come here for support and a thousand friends will cheer you on and cheer you up. Because you are not going to sabotage yourself, and you are going to learn to love yourself and your body and do good things for it, because you dserve it.

I have never heard that it wasn't allowed.

They have it in the check out lane at Home Depot. I've heard good things about it.

Those stomach cramps WEREN'T normal!
NMJG replied to Z28ChevyCamaro's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had something like this at almost 6 months out, very scary. Went to the ER but all they could tell from the CT scan is that it was inflamed. I called my doctor (I am 3 hrs from WLS office) but they didn't have much more to tell me except do liquids only for a few days and see. It settled down in a few days and Zofran plus antacids helped (had nausea too). Never figured it out but maybe it was a virus. -
When I'm full, I feel a sharp pain in left chest/shoulder area when I breathe.
NMJG replied to finallythin's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Panties is right. It's gas and you need to walk walk walk after meals. You'll also get used to figuring out when to stop so it happens less. I still have to walk after meals. I don't have sharp pain, but I'm uncomfortable and a good walk always makes me feel better. Oh, and I used GasX strips - huge help early on. -
Has anyone tried Isopure Protein Drinks?
NMJG replied to Aunt GG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have them and they are a good break from the sugary creamy shakes, but I'm not crazy about them. I've heard that if you mix it with crystal light it's better. I'm assuming that is 4 oz of crystal light to 4-8 oz of Isopure, but not positive. I've also heard that it makes pretty good popsicles and jello. -
wow! almost half a million calories! amazing.....

mmmmmm sounds really tasty

You look great! Really, congrats on a job very well done! As of today I am BMI in the 25% range, but I still think I'm fat. I just keep seeing my awful flabby tummy and the fat that hangs off my saddlebags. Hard to change our self perceptions. Will take much longer than losing the weight.

Gaining the weight BACK after doing everything to get ready and now losing the surgery because my weight went up instead of going down
NMJG replied to SleeveVPNYC's topic in Rants & Raves
Good luck to you! Great job getting back on track, that is so difficult, but you did it! Stay strong -
Hangramom, why don't you try this (just a suggestion) before going back to your surgeon. I recommend it only because I have seen it work for other vets. I fear I will be in your shoes at a year, too, so I pay attention to this stuff. Go back to tracking everything if you have stopped. Set yourself a calorie limit that you know works for you (i.e. enough food but that you can still lose on) Set yourself a nutritional limit for grams of Protein, carbs, fats that you know works. Start out with 3 days of just Protein shakes - I found it really affected my intake amount and how much I could eat. Seemed to jumpstart the sleeve and reduced how much I could eat at a time. I discovered this by accident. On day 4 start back to basics: go on regular foods but focus on firm protein (4 oz meat) first before eating anything else Eat vegs second. Avoid carbs - they are such slider foods and it's so easy to get too much in. Try to avoid Pasta, rice, bread, tortillas, potatoes, corn, crackers, popcorn, chips, candy. Get back to getting 64 oz of Water in and don't drink 30 min before or 60 min after meals. It does make a difference, especially if you are eating carbs. They just melt down with the liquid and you can get way too many down. Good luck and let us know how you do

Protein Shake Sickness
NMJG replied to LosingWeightLiz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I switched from whey to hemp and pea Protein, helped a lot. Nutiva and Amazing Meal or Amazing Grass. I also drink plain old milk. Higher carbs than I would like, but I can get it down easily. Drink it hot or cold. -
6 months out I have no trouble with spicy, and I live in New Mexico, so you know I mean spicy I added it back in after 8 weeks maybe. I do have trouble with things that have cinnamon oil or super sour stuff, which is a bummer. Hope that changes over time. I imagine that with all the PPI's and acid reducers sleevers are on in the beginning, spicy won't bother many.

Dang, look at you! Congrats on a great accomplishment,

15 grams of carbs/500 or fewer calories a day until I lose 100 pounds?
NMJG replied to Mel1071's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just to give you a different perspective, at 7 weeks I was eating less than 500 calories a day. Didn't really get to 800 a day regularly until 3-4 months out. I didn't have a problem with it at all and could not have eaten more. Even now I stick with 800-900 a day without being at all hungry and I exercised from the beginning. I don't doubt that your nut's program works, but i wouldn't want to follow it personally. If I were in your shoes i think I might look to switch nuts if at all possible. I get a lot of my Protein from dairy, which has carbs. I eat 40-50 g of carbs a day even with avoiding Pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, etc. because vegetables, Beans and dairy have carbs. I also take optifiber and use hemp protein, chia seeds, etc. Also, the well meaning folks who insist that you have to have 1000-1200 calories a day are not correct. Many of us, such as myself, have slow metabolisms and don't lose with that many calories. I simply maintain at 1200. Wish I was one of you fast BMR folks! Remember, everyone is different and there is no one size fits all for this stuff, only general guidelines. That's why I like reading everyone's different methods. There are some gems to be found now and then, as well as info to avoid (for me at least - might be great for someone else). Good luck with this. -
What do you do when you can't turn to food anymore?
NMJG replied to JillC878's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Can you go see a movie? That's a good one for me. At home I even have my go-to collection when i'm upset: Mama Mia Independence Day Pride and Prejudice Hope you feel better soon! -
IMHO I would not recommend it for sleeves until 4 months, but check with your doctor, they might have a different opinion. It's also a slider food - easy to eat waaaay too much :-o gobble gobble gobble

I usually go for an ounce of Jack Daniels with Water over ice. Lasts me almost an hour these days. It's only 60 calories and no carbs. If I do shots it hits me hard, so I don't do those now. My other go-to drink is a glass of red wine. That will last an hour, too. Has more calories and carbs, though. I used to drink beer, loved a good craft beer. Can't do it now, the carbonation makes me nauseous.

Honestly, the first 4-6 months I don't think you can eat enough to make a frozen diet meal worth eating, but I suppose you could get 3 meals out of it. IMHO I don't recommend it because for the first 3-4 months all you are going to get down is Protein, and maybe a bit of veg. You also aren't even going to be able to eat firm protein for half that time. Kind of a waste of a frozen meal. As time goes on you could keep some around for emergencies, but I don't think they are a great choice. I also don't care for them, not "real" food for the most part, unless you buy Amy's or other specialty brands. I don't like to spend a lot of time, either. I think there is another thread from several days ago with suggestions for quick foods.

you are eating too few calories.
NMJG replied to LindafromFlorida's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, Protein first and lots of it. I do think that applies to everyone. That is one thing WLS folks can agree on. Percentage of fats in your diet is open to debate. Lots of different opinions on that. I used to limit fats to 30% of my diet, but I don't now. But I also don't chow down on pork rinds, either and I keep total calories to 800/day. Best advice is to follow what your nutritionist and doctor subscribe to. If you don't have that benefit, like our OP here, then try different plans to see what works for you. Weight loss nutrition is a very gray area! Everyone has an opinion LOL. I'm not a nutritionist, I just share what works for me. Here are some interesting articles if you want to read up on high fat/low carb eating. I think it is a very interesting field of study. It's normal. Don't freak. dear. Try to weigh only once a week or less. Much better on your nerves
