  1. I just wanted to send out a thank you for this post.....and add my recommendation for: The Emotional First + Aid Kit by Cynthia L. Alexander.....definitely a keeper and a great reference to keep on hand well after surgery when facing challenges.
  2. Spasms have stopped, and I can drink cold liquids again, yay! It's the small things.... LOL

    August 6'ers?

I got through a hurdle yesterday.........a huge party....was originally thinking of not going or leaving before dinner because I'm still on clear liquids......that and I haven't told anyone but one sister and DH about the surgery.......hubby was afraid it'd be hard on me.....but it wasn't.....I had my bottle of water and sipped, sipped, sipped.....odd not to have had any solid food for nearly 3 weeks and not care either.....had a great time...and only one person noticed I wasn't eating.....told her my stomach was doing flip flops (well, it's true---the noises it makes now is amazing)

    Where should I start?

I went to that first informational session and then discussed with it my physician before meeting with the surgeon. (the info session coincided just days before my physical)
  5. I'm right there with you.....the gatorade G2 helped me today when I was light headed.....also boullion (a bit on the salty side rather than broth, but I think it helped. Jello and jigglers (both SF) helped I was having spasms, so the ice pops and anything cold was a no no for me, I'm a little leary to try them again...I dilute and drink warm: Isopure clear (protein), sf apple juice, and crystal light....easier to get down...... Good luck.

    August 6'ers?

I've got 5 stages, and change to the next stage every Tuesday....I'm on the Clear Liquids stage...42-70 oz Water, 1/2 bottle of isopure--20 grams Protein I think (diluted). Next Tuesday I graduate to full liquids, can't wait 40-60 g protein and 42-70 oz liquids. Skim milk, reek plain nonfat yogurt, cream of XX soup (98% fat free), Protein drinks, plus clear liquids.

    Where are the 50s ???

Hi All! I'm 4 days post op and doing well.....just wanted to thank you all for the support and inspiration, you guys rock!
  8. Wow, you look great, keep up the good work!
  9. Sleeved 8/6 came home 8/8 and doing well...had to switch to warm liquids because the cold gave me spasms......so no popsicles or italian ice (sf kind) for this VSG girl......so my watered down sf apple juice has just become "hot apple cider" and the crystal light became "hot lemon tea" LOL Will see what a few days brings....clear liquids only until Tuesday....then full liquids LuvThe Cardinals, hope tomorrow is better!

    protein shakes..... how long?

I was told I would be incorporating one protein supplement (drink/shake, etc.) for the rest of my life in order to get in the protein.....my doctor's have an acknowledgement that I understand their expectations post op that I initial, and this was clearly defined.

    Sipping post op?

My goal was the protein first, then the additional liquids.....I was feeling constrictions when I sipped---I mean, barely a trickle would go down--took 20 minutes or more to drink one ounce and hurt.....the hospital's bariatric PA called today and said that was spasms.....and to change the temperature.....I warm up my drinks now, and it's helped a whole lot.....hope this helps! Good luck!

    August 6'ers?

It's more comfortable for me to stand up straight....did they give you a spyro thing a ma jiggy for breakthing exercises? Breathing is getting easier every day.....I was told 20g protein via isopure clear and 40 ounces of water a day. I'm having spasms, and warm liquids do much better than cold or room temperature...good luck!
  13. The night before surgery....I kept myself busy and finally at 11 dropped from exhaustion.....and slept like a baby until the alarm went off at 4 a.m. I was in the OR, getting prepped for surgery, asked for something for nausea in my IV, we had a few laughs, and the next thing I know, I'm happily waking up in recovery... My eye sight was blurry for hours after the surgery....and as soon as they let me, I walked...blurry eye sight or not.....the fear of gas pain was my motivator, I walked as often and as far as they'd let me....and continued walking every hour starting the 1st day after surgery. When I was finally in a room (long delay), I felt utterly helpless and useless....like a beetle on its back. I'm not a fan of pain killers......don't experience pain like most people....I only took something late at night (not sure I needed it, but thought it couldn't hurt and sleep was important.) Morning came early, and the first thing I did was pee and walk...I don't think people knew what to make of me walking at 5:30 in the morning, so I just smiled and said good morning.....had the dreaded leak test this morning (wasn't so bad)....found it.hard to sip my liquids today, but wasn't too worried because I'm hooked to an IV......they are giving me prilosec in my IV, and I've never had nausea. I am sore, but not in any real pain. The only pain is when I breath in deep. The biggest problem I'm facing is high blood pressure.....it's all over the map.....so they are giving me something for that.....6 hours later we finally see a break. Day 2.....time to go home! Yeeha! so sick of being hooked up to an IV and having my pee measured and BP taken LOL The first thing I do is get up for my early morning walk.........and surprised how much easier it is to get up and out of that bed....wow! They give me another dose for my blood pressure.....will have my blood pressure checked on Monday with my PCP...may have to go on blood pressure medicine until some of this weight is gone (I've never been on BP meds before) I was dreading the self injections.....did that this morning, and it wasn't so bad. UPDATE: I did have a drain, and that for a brief second or two hat was some intense pain when it was take out---but again, very brief. I haven't experienced the gas pains yet....hoping all that walking worked it out....but I'm still walking..... I've experienced my restriction...took one little sip too many and felt it.....luckily it was a tiny sip and went away quickly. UPDATED: this pain I'm experiencing is a spasm, not a restriction....will try warm liquids and see how it goes. Now that I'm home, my arms are killing me.....I figure one is from the IV....no idea about the other....my IV was in my hand, and my hand is a little swollen and sore. I was told the priority and goal in the next few days is to get down the isopure (1/2 bottle mixed with water).....finding it difficult, but I sip as much as I can (I found in the hospital juice and broth went down much easier LOL) I haven't gained weight from the hospital (yet anyway) but I am swollen around the mid section. Right now I'm feeling rather fortunate....have not had a WTH did I do moment. I'm so thankful to have a wonderful man by my side for support. The things I packed that I used....a pillow (only for the ride home)....a maxidress w/o anything at the waist was great for going home with a cami underneath...a note pad/pen for notes/questions for when the doctor came in...my own tooth brush/paste, hiar brush, eye glass case, and my cell phone to check in with VST and for my email. I know this is just the first step in a life long journey, but rather than anxious as I have been, I'm looking forward to the ride.....
  14. Thank you all.....if that was gas pain in my arms, it was gone by this morning....happy for that. I measure out 1 ounce of liquid in a tiny cup and spread it out for 15 minutes....than repeat so I get 4 ounces in an hour.....at least that's the goal...and it's a lot of work keeping an eye on it....

    August 6'ers?

I don't have an answer about how much walking we should do.....yesterday was my first day home, and I tended to sleep quite a bit...I'm trying to keep busy today, tidy some things up, so I'm standing and moving about much more.....difficult getting in the liquids.....trying injury chicken broth for lunch.....no shakes for me until Tuesday...supposed to focus on isopure clear, but for some reason it doesn't go down as easy as juice LOL

    August 2013 Roll Call

You'll do fine on Monday....don't worry about what you've lost on the pre-op....I "only" lost 11 pounds......they told me between 10 & 20 (I was going for the 20 LOL)....we all lose weight at our own pace....just keep sticking with the dr's orders until Monday....Good luck!

  19. Were you given prilosec post op? Were you able to take it as is? Did you mix it with something? I was told to mix it with applesauce, but I'm 2 days post op and only on liquids for another 4 days. Many thanks!

    August 6'ers?

I'd call them to verify it.....Mine told me to take it this afternoon (the day before surgery). yamgirl.....the hospital should call you today to confirm the time.....wish I had no m.o.m. for me, too LOL Wishing you all well....I'll probably be surfing again at 2 a.m. when I can't sleep because I'm too excited/anxious for tomorrow!
