Ok I went and looked (gee I'm a geek). What I read is that you have to be over 50 bmi to have a duodenal switch (DS). The sleeve was formulated as the first step to that surgery, for those that were extremely obese it was often not safe enough to do the entire procedure at one time. They also found that many did not need the second step they lost all they needed with just the sleeve. The second half of the surgery is a malabsorbsion component. Some people get pre approved for the DS, and in that way circumvent the one WLS per lifetime rule. They have the sleeve and then decide later if they need the second step or not.

After yelling burning sensation
chinamama replied to LARBET95's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sometimes we yell, oh well! (And I teach parenting classes) as long as you were not verbally abusive, sometimes that's the only time some people listen. Did you have a hiatal hernia repaired? It might be that. -

Ugh! Weight gain!
chinamama replied to kmschneiderpac's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's totally normal but hard to watch. Remember this is one of the points when dieting alone that we would give up and go have a cupcake/donut/pick your own favorite food..... Our bodies are freaking out. We have been limiting calories for weeks and now we incorporate soft foods and it thinks it needs to hold on to the calories incase we try to starve it again. Thank goodness that I had my lapband and have charted my weight in the past so I can see that's how weight loss seems to happen. Lose weight, plateau, gain weight and then lose again. Or whatever your particular pattern is. AND even though I know this is how my body works I am having a lot of trouble, up 2 lbs over a week ago! It will happen it can't possibly not, but it's still hard! Good luck! -
I feel like im eatting toooo much
chinamama replied to chinamama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What is a hot rod? Actually that's why I chose this surgery also, I was not content to live the rest of my life without (bypass). I want to be able to eat a small piece of birthday cake without dumping, actually eat anything just smaller portions. -

HELP! Why am I so itchy?
chinamama replied to LisaLoseAlotx2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just because you didn't have allergies in the past dosent mean you haven't developed a new one. Our bodies are always changing and you can develop new ones or lose old ones at anytime. -
A friend of mine wants me to start juicing. I know we are not suppose to have raw veggies early on (I'm 4 weeks today) but is juicing ok since it takes out all the fibrous stuff????

You can make your own split pea very easily. 3 cups split peas rinsed (I throw mine in the crockpot) I put a box of chicken stock in for flavor, a couple of cloves of garlic or garlic powder. Chop an onion real fine. If you want you can add grated carrots or celery but you will have to blend or strain when done. Salt and pepper to taste. Let it cook all day. The soup will thicken quite a bit when cooled. I just scoop 1/3-1/2 a cup into my mug add a little Water and heat. You could probably freeze into ice cubes and use as needed.

Thanks ill wait a couple more weeks. I'm not a huge juice fan have always wanted to get my nutrients from fresh fruits and veggies but want to stay healthy, since that was the reason I got my sleeve.

Well the nausea could be from not enough electrolytes calories or Protein. Have you tried Gatorade or something with electrolytes? You can always add a protein bullet to it. I know the Proteins type is not optimum but something is better than nothing. Sip on that and see if it helps. Good luck

What does your surgeon say? Personally I do not think this is normal. Have you tried to get in to see one of the local bariatric surgeons? Did your pcp check to see if you are dehydrated? Stricture? You can always go to the ER to be checked out. Figure out which one has Bariatrics on call. That is a back door way of seeing one of the bariatric surgeons quickly. Good luck and sorry you are feeling so bad.

Post op itching
chinamama replied to WillInAtlanta's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm allergic to a lot of things, that said head to toe itching is not a normal reaction and I would check it out with either your surgeon or PCP. If you start seeing welts, hives, or have trouble breathing go to the ER. You might try benydryl or Vit c -
Day 3 Post Op- Can I have Protein Shakes?
chinamama replied to QueenAmandy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nutritionist also recommend ensure clear. Not as much Protein as some but easy to find. I got the peach and it was palatable over ice. I also use the shots, I think I found both at Walmart. How long are you suppose to be on clear liquids? -
Ok I'm 4 weeks out on soft food, can I have strawberries? Either by themselves or in a protein drink?
-
Thanks I had pretty much decided the raspberries were out but was hoping the strawberry seeds were small enough to not cause problems. I guess I'll strain some after everyone goes home.

Band to Sleeve Revision- One or Two Procedures?
chinamama replied to BrokeMyHalo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My dr did it in one. She prefers it that way. My stomach had prolapsed thru the band and my stomach was adhered to my liver. I ended up being in surgery 4 1/2 hours. Good news was my band unclasped and slid right off my stomach. -
Incision possibly infected?!?

So, I've got a conundrum about Prilosec...
chinamama replied to LipstickLady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Too much acid can sometimes cause ulcers so I think the Drs. are trying to get our stomachs fully healed without any complications.
