I will be 40 in January, and am hoping to get my sleeve in Dec. I have been saying for a while now that I will not be fat in my 40's, and I am committed to this journey. Let this be the decade I start sporting a bikini!

Sleeve Myths or Reality?
Teachamy replied to RichardVST's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was suggested by my office that we limit carbs initially because our weight loss will be easier that way, and they don't want anything getting in the way of the protein intake. We are were told to drink 64 oz. a day (including protein shakes) and 3 meals with 3 snacks. -

Wow! You look fantastic! And I love your black and white dress! Congratulations! -
I have yet to have surgery, but I would definitely talk to your doctor. As a type I diabetic, what you are describing sounds a lot like low blood sugar to me. If you're not diabetic, it won't go low enough to be dangerous, but hypoglycemia can feel miserable and won't get better until you get some carbs into your body. If you can tolerate sipping juice, I would recommend it. And definitely call your doctor.

I haven't even had surgery yet, but I think naked jiggling sessions in front of a mirror are called for right now. Great motivation idea! -
Depressed and sad
Teachamy replied to Tabby Closet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's great that you can pinpoint the fact that you are mourning food. It is an emotional release for me. Triggers serotonin and other wonderful hormones. But it is a grieving process in a way, trying to find other ways to cope. I am pre-op and attempting to prepare for the loss of that crutch. Thanks for sharing your rough day. It helps me a lot to read about bumps in the road. Best of luck! -

This happens to me all the time as a Type I diabetic. Very uneducated people see "Steel Magnolias" and assume a piece of chocolate will make me drop dead. Lovely. I don't know what will happen post-surgery -
Asking doctor to possibly modify surgery, need opinion

Your surgeon will definitely explain this to you, as will a nutritionist who works with VGS patients. -
SCARED CRAPLESS IM GONNA LOSE SO SLOW ... I'LL FAIL!
Teachamy replied to cpeycke's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Losing an average of 1 pound per week is typical/recommended without a sleeve. Expecting to lose 10 pounds a month is an optimistic case scenario. Some people do, some people won't. I have a low BMI too, so I expect my loss might be on the slow side. Either way is OK with me. -
Yahoo! I am hoping for Dec. 18! You'll be 2 days ahead of me!

Feeling Like Crap!
Teachamy replied to SigmaChefSpe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the steps you are taking for your health may be making others feel awkward and embarrassed about their own choices. While I guess they are trying to be helpful, I think it's human nature to compare ourselves to others and distance ourselves in the process. Congratulations to you on this healthy decision, and the decision to be brave enough to share with everyone. -
I hear ya! I jumped through every last hoop by May of last year and was kept waiting and waiting and waiting by doctor's offices not sending paperwork after repeated calls and requests for them. I say the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Get on a first-name basis with these people! After a few months of delay due to unrelated medical junk, I am hoping to FINALLY get my surgery in Dec. Good luck to you!

I imagine so...I would watch out for the salt content though. The sodium tends to be high in a lot of canned soups.

The way I look at it, you don't see many 70 year olds walking around with the excess weight that most of us carry. Obesity leads to a whole range of illnesses, and the surgery is a tool to help us get where we want to be--healthy! (not dead before our 70th birthday) It is unfortunate that your PCP seems to know so little about your situation. It sounds to me like he may have been talking about Lap Band instead of VSG. (?) Talk to your surgeon about your PCP's "statistics". That way you'll get an educated opinion on the matter. I am 5'5" 210 pounds, and I am going for it! Good luck.

Caffeine withdrawals!
Teachamy replied to McButterpants's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear you! I am so coffee-dependent! Caffeine is my drug of choice. I didn't start my weaning process until I started the pre-op diet! (I was originally scheduled for surgery July 31, but it had to be postponed because it was discovered I have AFib). Now the AFib has been successfully treated, but I have picked back up on my coffee habit since I won't have surgery until December. I need to start the half-caf. plan for a few weeks to begin to prepare myself. -
I am so sorry you are going through this! You may want to talk to your surgeon because I heard H. Pylori can make it difficult to swallow. It sounds like a hospital stay with IV antibiotics and fluids might be your best option until your strep is cleared up. Dehydration is bad news! Good luck.
