two awesome NSV (non-scale victory :))
dma2013 replied to mariamitani's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's great! Congratulations -
I think sometimes they make the decision and enter into the computer but don't process it right away and then the patient just waits. No harm in calling and checking in every few days
-
I'm sorry, keep your chin up, hopefully things will get better soon....

Don't you just love the inequality?
dma2013 replied to quackstitch's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really had to fight to get approved and it took 4 extra months. I made a choice to be productive with that time to prepare for the possibility of surgery. I was finally approved and 13 days later I was sleeved. I will be the first to tell you that I am not a patient person but I also know enough to go with the flow when needed. My surgeon was furious with the way I was treated (as was I) however in no way would I ever begrudge or think down upon anyone else who was able to have the surgery before or after me regardless of their circumstances. I am on this forum because I believe most people feel this way and we are here to support each other. At the very least I hope everybody can be respectful of each other. -
I know how frustrating it is too wait, I was suppose to have surgery on 12/8 and did not have it until 4/9. Though I did not see anything positive about it at the time, looking back I was able to take more time to prepare and be ready. I went in without a second thought and breezed through the surgery and recovery. As the old saying goes "good things come to those who wait" take some time to be frustrated and even pout and then pick yourself up and keep on doing everything you can to prepare for the surgery. Best of luck to you

Exercise and calorie intake :)
dma2013 replied to mariamitani's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every program/doctor is different but for me I am 7 weeks 2 days post op and I have lost 38 pounds in that time. I am eating @ 1200 calories a day per my NUT's instructions. If I wanted to I could actually eat up to 1500 but I have not. This seems to be working for me, I am pleased with 7plus pounds a week -
My husband went to HR because he was frustrated (putting it nicely) that we pay so much in insurance and that they kept denying me. He spoke to the HR rep who in turn contacted the insurance rep for his company. The HR rep was able to verbalize the situation and explained how this could benefit me long term. Pretty much simultaneously my surgeon sent an appeal letter and I was approved the next morning and had surgery 13 days later! So in truth I don't know if and or how much contacting HR helped, or if it was the surgeon or both that got me approved, but something worked!
-
I was denied twice, my letters didn't help me. What helped was the doctor sent a letter on my behalf and my husband went to the HR department at his work. Both happened on the same day, the next morning we got an email saying I was approved. Now whenever I see my surgeon he say "persistence works" and I agree

How is everyone handling the BBQ's today
dma2013 replied to Sweetcarol238's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
We kept ourselves very busy with the kids all weekend and then I opted to have a bbq at our house where I could control the food. Grilled chicken, salad a "health...ier" pasta salad then most (none for me) and a fresh fruit salad. It was delicious and everyone enjoyed. -
I love the ready to drink premier protein shake. I have only had the chocolate ones but they do make them in strawberry.

Clothing right after surgery.
dma2013 replied to shays4265's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yoga pants and I bought undies that were a size too big because of swelling and such. I could not wear a robe in the hospital due to the IV so I used 2 hospital gowns but they did unhook the IV for a little while and let me put a sports bra on. -
I was cleared for eating anything at 3 weeks post op as long as I had 65-75 grams of Protein a day and 64 ounces of Water. At first I tolerated foods really well and did great, mostly I have been eating protein, veggies and @25 grams of carbs a day. I was never sick or felt sick and no heart burn. However i have had a really hard time eating in recent days, I don't feel sick but things don't seem to go down well. I am told this is partly due to another health issue and my body is adjusting to the change, it seems strange that this is happening 3 weeks after the fact! I would love to know what others consider to be their "go-to" foods , maybe I can find something I haven't tried yet that will go down easier for me. Any feedback is appreciated

What are your "go-to" foods?

stalled and overly emotional. aka - it's been a rough week
dma2013 replied to makemyownluck's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awww you sound miserable, I'm sorry I went through something similar, but it does pass. I "stalled" my second week and remained in the stall for abput 3 weeks! It was awful but since then I have lost about 8 more pounds It does get better.....also I was very teary eyed and sad off and on for weeks. I can't say I am completely over this but this too did get better. Keep up the good work and cut yourself some slack you are doing great!!! -
handling negative WLS opinions
dma2013 replied to VSGelle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Firstly, I am sorry you were treated in such a negative manner and to add insult to injury you spent money on it!!! How rude and unprofessional!!! I would encourage you to look at a few different options. If you are under 26 your parents may be able to put you on their insurance (provoding they have it) this premium will probably be reasonably priced. You could also look on the Mass health connector to see about purchasing insurance or you can look into local hospitals that may offer a sliding scale type program. If you were able to do any of the above you should be able to find a general practitioner who can meet with you pre-op and provide follow-up care post op. I was sleeved in Mass so I don't have experience with Mexico, however I have read many posts on this site as well and have seen many videos on you tube from people who went to Mexico and did great. Best of luck to you, feel free to message me! -
Devastating, my thoughts and prayers are with all affected. Terrible tragedy, too sad for words.

Exercise? How to get committed...
dma2013 replied to NuLife4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it's that I feel like since I went through surgery and all it entails, I am going to do everything I can to make the most of it.....which means excercise is essential -
should i get a scale
dma2013 replied to blackie220's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have one and in retrospect I was probably slightly obsessesd for the first few weeks after surgery. After reading another post on here about a lady who never had a stall since she only weighs in once a month at her doctor I have changed my ways. I have decided to only check the scale every Tuesday morning, I think this will only be my second Tuesday but it is working for me. It is less discouraging but should I gain I will know with in a week and change something I am doing. -
Premier Protein shakesfrom Costco are the best!

Getting Discouraged
dma2013 replied to KatieOkieDokie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was sleeved on 4/9 and I have lost @ 30pounds and I am walking and excercising regularly so by comparison you are doing better then me! Keep your chin up, hopefully as time passes you will feel better and be able to do more -
Is any insurance easier to get approved than BCBS?
dma2013 replied to Teachingmom's topic in Insurance & Financing
I was in a different situation then you, BCBS would not approve me because I had a lower bmi. It was a fight but persistence paid off and I got sleeved. Maybe if you keep fighting them they will come around like they did for me. Good luck -
best decision ever.... down 85lbs.

curious.....whats your school of thought?
dma2013 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery on 4/9/13 and I have lost @ 30 pounds with 53 more to go, but for my own sanity I am taking my weight loss 5 pounds at a time. For me it is much easier to handle this way! My NUT has been a great source of information and I have only positive things to say about her. However I am noticing more and more that many people who have had the sleeve shy away from carbs. My NUT has told me that she wants me to eat "normal" but in small portions but to alwways eat 4 bites of protein, 2 bites of veggies and add in carbs/starch as I can tolerate. So typically I have a protein and salad for dinner and I may add an 8th of a baked potato or a few pieces of smart taste pasta. With breakfast or lunch I may have a 1/2 of a whole grain wrap or English muffin with eggs, deli meat, cheese or peanutbutter, etc. I have also had special k high protein cereal and raisin bran in moderation. I am reaching my protein and water goals every day As I stated in the beginning I have lost about 30pounds, however most of that was immediately following surgery and I have been struggling for a coule of weeks too reach another 5 pound mini goal. My body has definitely changed even since the initial weight loss however I don't know if I should go against the NUTS aadvice and completely stop the carbs, I probably have no more then 25 a day. I was curious to see how others felt about a low carb diet rather then no carbs....
