Warning: If you take Reglan...
sknyinside replied to marfar7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like the beginning of or an atypical presentation of neuroleptic malignant syndrome was a possibililty as well. Really glad you went to the ER without delay. edit - just saw your response about dystonia. Dystonia can be one of the components of NMS. So glad you did not play around -
Don't know if this will help anyone. I have not been sleeved yet. But I was diagnosed with IBS about 20 years ago. I went on a diet to get rid of carbohydrate addiction. It included omitting all grains as well as dairy. All of my IBS symptoms went away. After doing a challenge, I have been diagnosed as gluten intolerant. It has been absolutely life-changing. I have heard from many people that they become intolerant to lactase or gluten after their sleeve. It may be that a mild intolerance becomes larger after the surgery

VSG causes high risk for pancreatic cancer
sknyinside replied to Jenny12's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Here's my take on it - keeping in mind that I haven't researched it. Many gastrectomies in the past were due to gastric ulcers which were bleeding and difficult to treat. The reason many were so difficult to treat is that some ulcers are not just caused by increased stomach acid production, but due to a bacteria - H. pylori. H. pylori causes increased chance of pancreatic cancerj in and of itself. I am an oncology nurse and have had H. pylori myself in the past if you are wondering how I know this without research. Just doing a gastrectomy is not going to get rid of h pylori. Seems like the 1980's or 1990's is when H pylori started being treated with antibiotics. So, depending on when people were treated with gastrectomy for ulcers, it may play a part in this statistic. So, it may not be that having a gastrectomy was the problem causing increased pancreatic cancer, but that the reason a gastrectomy was needed was the problem. Just food for thought. -
Relatively new; anyone have a child with autism?
sknyinside replied to smt216's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sorry so late to reply. I haven't been sleeved either. I'm jumping through insurance hoops. My guy is going to turn 15 soon and he still runs to me and throws his arms around me regardless of who is around. But I know it's just a matter of time. He's beginning to be concerned with his appearance. The upside of this is hygiene isn't so much of a daily struggle! -
You are not alone in this. I know how you feel. Most people here have probably had the same (or close to it anyway) thoughts. I have been battling with my weight for over 25 years. I can lose some but it always comes back. I'm so afraid I'll go through having this surgery and will manage to fail at it and then I'm really screwed because this is the last resort. It terrifies me to think I might go to this extreme and still not succeed. Because then there are no more excuses. So it would mean there was something really wrong with me, right? But we can and will do this! Motivation and determination can get you through so many things that seemed scary at some point. Getting motivated will hopefully get easier when some of the physical sensations of being hungry all the time or feeling out of control are minimized. Finding tools now and trying to get my head in the game before surgery is my biggest challenge and goal right now. Have so many coworkers and friends who have been through this and they all felt this way at some point and are all doing great. So, keep reading the forums and hopefully the successes will help reassure us until we have gone through it and have success ourselves.

Three Years Later - What I've Learned
sknyinside replied to DougNichols's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Awesome post! I'm still in the pre-op phase and am trying to make sure my head is "right" before having surgery. We all hear what we are and are not supposed to do post-surgery. My nutritionist plays a video on why you should not *drink* with meals. Has been really helpful visually as I am trying to do behavior modifications now so that post surgery it may lessen how many behaviors I need to change. Anyway, I thought this would apply nicely in this thread. Here's a linky: -
In my 5th week, on solids, but still having loose BM!
sknyinside replied to mistysj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've heard that some people discover after their sleeve, they have a lactase intolerance. Can you tell if there is any sort of pattern? -
Have you called your surgeons office? If its hurting maybe it should be checked out I haven't had the sleeve done yet. But this soon out I didn't think that much physical hunger was generally experienced? May be worth a phone call
-
Hmmm. This concerns me. I've had good experience so far. But am not that into it yet. I don't have a strong opinion either way bout my selected surgeon. If it turns into an issue, I will go elsewhere.

If it was not a problem before, you may want to make sure you are getting enough water in your diet. Dehydration can cause you to have dehydration everywhere!

anyone know what fatbombs

LOL Will check that out. I can only imagine. -

Fat helps with satiety. If you're feeling hungry or just want something, rather than eating carbohydrates which cause insulin spike and then drop, which increases hunger, fat keeps you on low carb and satisfies. Just my guess. edit - I don't know how this relates pre vs post-vsg. I think this was mostly for people on a low carb diet. Not necessarily for post vsg -

Here's a link to an example: http://lowcarbbetterhealth.blogspot.com/2012/07/fat-bombs.html -
Oh just want to add this: If you are uncomfortable with squats due to the bar, you can just hold a dumbbell between your thighs and do them that way. If you turn your toes out and squat while holding a dumbbell between your legs, it will work the inside of your thighs very well. Hold the dumbbell by the end not on the bar going across. You want it to be pointing up and down. That will at least get you get used to the movement of the squat without putting the added strain on your back. Your form won't be quite as important as with a heavy bar going across your shoulders

yay, you! Can definitely see a difference. Congratulations!

That's awesome to hear. Fingers crossed!

Our Costs after insurance
sknyinside replied to RebecaSparkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also, even if you stay overnight, if it's less than 24 hours it CAN be outpatient. However, the hospital has to actually bill/code it as an outpatient or observation stay. With a surgery, even less than 24 hours, it will probably be billed or coded as inpatient. A few variables, but the hospital may be able to clarify that ahead of time for you. -
I too have IBS. I am just starting to jump through the insurance hoops. So it will be at least six months before have anything done. I am hoping that it helps my symptoms!

Walking lunges, step ups, deadlifts (check Romanian, stiff legged dead lifts and good mornings), just really watch your form. Squats really are best imho, and you don't have to go heavy. Compound moves build better and squats just really round the butt nicely. You can also have your legs like a lunge, then just squat under the bar. But if you don't like squatting, regular lunges probably better

You could try a glycerin suppository before an enema if you want to try that. Lotsa people have good results with that. If it doesn't work, could follow up with the fleets

Hurts taking deep breaths
sknyinside replied to Nainai32065's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just read another thread where people 3, 4, 5 weeks out are having pains, maybe related to increased activity level? Would check in with the doctor, just to be safe -

EXACTLY why I'm doing this. I have a 14 year old with Asperger's, but he is not doing as well as we had hoped. I don't know if he'll be able to live by himself. Need to be around a long time to take care of him too. -

sknyinside replied to Nainai32065's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you running any fever? And check your pulse rate. If you have access to getting your blood pressure checked, would do that too. But I agree, call your doctor even if vital signs are normal. Is the pain new or has it done this since surgery? -
Dr. Ordoyne is leaving. That is who I wanted to do it. He's going to be the medical director of an insurance company. He will be taking call on weekends, but is leaving full time surgery. Broke my heart! I spoke with him a few weeks ago in the hospital and I believe he was on call and already gone from full time stuff. I'm looking at Dr. Rachel Moore who is in with Dr. Lavin. They use three surgical centers. One is in New Orleans, one in Covington, and one in Slidell. Went for my first appointment today for weigh in and spoke with one of the nurse practitioners. Liked all the staff and they seemed to have it together pretty good. I'm going to a seminar in Covington tomorrow night. It's looking like, if all is a "go", I'll be having surgery in September.
