2nd day post op and i feel terrible..help
sknyinside replied to yamgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gas x strips that dissolve on your tongue. Someone with more experience will chime in I'm sure. Wouldn't hurt to call your surgeon, especially with the vomiting since I would imagine that couldn't be good for your staple line. Did they give you anything for nausea? -
Just went through a swimsuit trial while on vacation a few states over. Oh, it was horrible. So glad to hear you had a good outcome!! Gives mehope for the future! Congratulations!

Will be keeping you in my thoughts/prayers. Let us know how you are doing as soon as you are able. You'll do great!

I don't think people are trying to be mean. This exact question was asked in another post with nearly identical answers. I know I answered and my first concern was the swelling causing damage to the sleeve. I think most people are wondering if it is for real since there were many concerned, appropriate responses. So a second post with the same thing, hoping for different answers seems a bit suspicious. To the OP - please throw all that stuff out so you won't be tempted before you hurt yourself. Because you managed it once without harm, doesn't mean it's a free pass. You can literally die from these poor choices. If you can't control it, you may need to see a therapist who can help you with deeper issues causing you to behave in potentially damaging ways. Wish you the best with this. Please listen to your doctor and the people on here who want only to be supportive.

The Good, the Bad, but Mostly, the UGLY
sknyinside replied to Newnay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I posted this somewhere else, but it's worth repeating ifyou haven't seen/tried it and need it: 8 ounces warm almost hot Water juice of 1 lemon honey to taste (1 tsp or so) Drink FIRST thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Will help with the constipation, gently, naturally and comfortably. Someone on here tried it and has had terrific results. I swear by it. -
feeling so sick
sknyinside replied to sleevedreamerkemp's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Call your MD's office. They may change antibiotics or give you a medicine to help with the nausea. It's a side effect, not an allergic reaction. But if it is really limiting your intake it's an issue. They likely have a MD oncall for tonight if it's after business hours. I would call. It will at least put your mind at ease. -
Jeanie, I too am a lower BMI. I have had a couple of close friends tell me they thought I wasn't heavy enough for the surgery. First, it's really evenly distributed and I probably do not look as heavy as I am. I think I look my weight but they seem surprised I weigh what I do. I don't see how, I wear a 3x top! But this has been a struggle for more than 25 years. I've been bigger, and I've been smaller. I'm in the general neighborhood weight-wise that I've been for years. I can't seem to get it off and keep it off. I have a strong family history of diabetes and heart disease. I am pre-diabetic, have elevated cholesterol and lipids, and am knocking on the door of cardiac problems. I'm 45 and I want to run with my kids and not get out of breath running up the stairs at work. I want to be healthy. I can honestly say I've tried everything else. I lived in the gym for a couple of years. Yes, I lost weight. But it was not a reasonable effort to lose it. It was extraordinary and all consuming. I don't have the time, energy or inclinication for that now. I want to be present for my kids, my husband, and myself. This is for me and my immediate family. Everyone else is entitled to their opiniion. I appreciate their concern and that it's coming from a caring place. But this was a decision my very conservative husband is behind 100% because he's seen the struggles and is concerned for my health. I will gladly tell people I'm having it done and gladly tell how I lost the weight. If they feel entitled to remark upon it, I am very capable of saying "I appreciate your concern, but this is my journey." Am I scared? Do I have any reservations, concerns and "Have I really tried everything?" questions? ABSOLUTELY! Terrified. But I'm terrified of what will happen if I don't have it. Need to do this before I have serious, irreversible complications. You are not in it alone and you have a tremendous support group in this forum as well as your family.

Also throwing it out there, muscle cramps are very frequently caused by dehydration. Sodium levels play a big part in cramps. More so than potassium issues. Another thread we were discussing how a few sips of pickle juice helps with the dehydration and sodium deficiencies. It really works. And there is mounting evidence to support it. Like a shot glass full - not a lot. But rhabdo can have less shocking symptoms than tea or cola colored urine. Decreased urine output (oliguria), muscle soreness, stiffness (especially if you're not upping your workout and you're staying sore), fatigue, muscle stiffness, unintentional weight gain (likely edema) and joint pain. Treatment involves upping the fluids, but also adding sodium bicarbonate. Hospital it is given IV. Sodium bicarb is found in many antacids. It protects the kidneys from the byproducts of muscle breakdown that can damage them. Severe cases of rhabdo can cause acute renal failure. Nothing to play with. The combination of severe muscle trauma (including from workouts) with suboptimal hydration can cause rhabdo. A mild case can cause damage to the kidneys. Hydration is ssoooooo freakin' important! edit - Don't try to treat yourself if you suspect rhabdo. They are trying to flush the kidneys. But outside of a clinical setting you are risking Fluid overload if your kidneys start shutting down. You may not get the alarming symptoms until irreparable harm has been done to the kidneys. It only takes 60-90 minutes of decreased blood flow to the kidneys to end up on dialysis.

I'm doing it. I'm pre-op, but hoping to get healthier and used to eating this way before surgery. I've been on it for a few months and I really feel so much better. More energy. Even my kids are liking it!

feeling so sick
sknyinside replied to sleevedreamerkemp's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Neomycin, like most antibiotics, have a high likliehood of nausea. Especially on an empty stomach. I'm guessing it is a prophylactic treatment to prevent infection prior to surgery. If it is more than a one time dose, just make sure you take it with food or milk. But even then, it can still cause nausea. So sorry you're feeling yucky before your surgery! -
I need your help!
sknyinside replied to taylormarie421's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are in ketosis (breath smells kinda like nail polish remover (acetone)), you may need a little more carbs as well. Atkins diets you go into ketosis due to the low carbs. Definitely need to up your protein but a few carbs, if they are lacking, may help your energy as well. But I agree with the above poster, you need to up your protein if possible. If you keep a log of your protein, carbs and water, it may help you see exactly where your deficiencies lie. But at 20 grams of protein, you definitely need more. -
Coffee! Is there a medical reason why they say no regular coffee?
sknyinside replied to chapasmamita's topic in Food and Nutrition
I don't know if this is relevant or helpful, but here goes: I love coffee. Alot. Like I wrote a poem about it. But I'm down to one cup in the morning in preparation for my sleeve. I was wondering about this when I stumbled on this thread. It's difficult for me to eat Breakfast, but I always have my cup of coffee. Well, I'm also doing the paleo way of eating to break carbohydrate addiction. Recently came across a recipe and have been trying it. Found it is satisfying, cures the one hour post coffee hunger issue I was having. So, thought it may be helpful to a few brave souls who wanted to try it. BTW, it is yummy and takes the place of cream in my coffee. It was listed on Mark's Daily Apple and is called Primal Egg Coffee. For people doing paleo, it would take the place of Bulletproof Coffee. I am really surprised how much I like it and it keeps me satisfied for a while. I'm using large cup and three yolks and the pinch of salt. Article below with recipes. Would love to know if anyone tries it and their impressions. http://www.marksdail.../#axzz2aCDGoHBv -
I have kind of a really lot in that department. Even when I was a size "0" in jeans (*sigh*), I was a DD in bra. But now that I've had and breastfed kids, am over 40 and in surgically induced menopause, I can see now I'm going to be left with "the skin my boobs used to be in". I haven't even had the sleeve and I'm planning a lift! Even with modest weight loss on my own, it's noticeable. If I could get a time machine, go back 28 years and never gain the weight to begin with... Ah well. I'll just have to save for surgery. As my aunt would say, they will look like "two raw eggs hanging on a nail". Love the breastcicles

Eating Ramen for a snack one month post op?
sknyinside replied to rmma1000's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hey, no judgement here. If I was able to make good choices all the time, I certainly wouldn't be in the shape I'm in and in pre-op for surgery. The expansion possibility of this food concerns me. Don't want you to hurt yourself! I have a feeling, I'll be doing some serious pantry cleansing to get the tempting stuff out of sight, out of mind! -
As long as you don't have trouble eating almonds Since almond meal is just ground up almonds. I wouldn't think it would be harmful as far as expansion goes. Just make sure the rest of the ingredients aren't expansive. Since the "white" stuff is usually refined wheat/grain based foods and high in carbs, I don't think paleo bread is really a "white" food, if you see what I mean. Was that clear as mud or what? Hope it makes sense. I usually equate white foods as processed foods. If you are eating paleo, you are NOT eating processed. Feel so much better eating this way.
-
Paleo bread made with mostly almond meal should be okay. Coconut flour can be very very absorptive. It is also tremendously high in fiber. Not sure which recipe that one is. I do paleo and haven't done alot in the bread section, so can't help there. But do be aware of the flours qualities. Most paleo bread is going to be high in protein and fat, lower carb. But can be a potential carb bomb if heavy in sweeteners like honey, etc.

I have had family members bring their hospitalized loved ones pickle juice for leg cramps. It's always been a home remedy and it works. Didn't know it would help with reflux. Will keep that in mind.

Eating Ramen for a snack one month post op?
sknyinside replied to rmma1000's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Um, I'm not sleeved yet. But - eating uncooked ramen which could expand in your sleeve? I'd think that would be a questionable choice. But, again. I'm not sleeved and not an expert. Why, if you don't mind my asking, that particular choice of snack? Seems high in carbs and in general not nutrient rich. A month out, seems Proteins and liquids would be a priority? Don't mean that to sound snotty. Not how it's meant at all. Just wondering. -

Have you checked to see if you are impacted? If you need specifics, PM me. They call me the poop nazi at work for a reason. If impaction removed, or if no impaction, can try mineral oil enema. Let it dwell as long as you can. If no results, follow with a regular Fleets enema. But keep it going from the top as well, by using miralax or Senna S. After you get cleaned out, to prevent problems, try this as well: FIRST thing in the morning. 1 cup warm, almost hot, Water, juice of 1 lemon and a bit of honey to sweeten. Drink first. Then coffee or other liquids if so inclined. -
Not submitting to insurance until after surgery?

I have BCBS of AL. I am jumping through all kinds of hoops and yes, prior authorization is required for me. -
Congratulations! Hope to be joining this group in Sept or Oct! Best, best of luck to you.

I couldn't do a pullup now if my life depended on it. But, yes, I was hardcore in the gym . It's been within the last 10 years, so hopefully it's attainable once again. It was like prozac for me. Can't wait to be physically able to hit it hard again!

Can't Lose Anymore Weight! :'(
sknyinside replied to nashiemmom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
From everything I've read, this is normal. You're in a stall. don't give up, just keep eating right, exercising and be patient. Even without the sleeve, it's normal to hit plateaus. You can and will do this Keep you're Water intake up to flush the toxins out. The water intake is usually a huge part of any weight loss.
