Ankle/Foot Cramps at night
Chelenka replied to MadB's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get these a lot. I think it's possibly a combination of dehydration, not enough potassium and also my body adjusting to the weight loss. The amount of force and torque being put on your feet and ankles is being reduced rapidly and the muscles and tendons are reacting to the change. Just my theory but I like it. ;-D -
March 25, 2013 changed my life -- 1 yr surgery-versary!

WOW! You look AMAZING! So cute! Great job! -
AWESOME! Do you feel overwhelmed by all the new clothing choices?

Woah! Slow down! What? You are a week post-op and should be just transitioning to the full liquids stage at this point, unless your post-op guidelines are different from what mine were. You may be able to nibble tiny bits of different foods but please remember you are still healing and will be for several months. You have post-op swelling internally and can't feel the full sensation yet. If you continue your self-sabotage you risk serious complications not just weight regain. So STOP IT!!!!! Generally speaking the sleeve doesn't cause dumping syndrome but some people do experience it if they eat something excessively fatty or sweet. If you wanted dumping syndrome then you should have gotten the bypass. You can ask your surgeon about having a revision to the bypass but IMO you might want to consider seeking therapy to help you get control of your issues with food and eating. Any WLS can be eaten around eventually and the weight regained. you don't want that to happen I'm sure or you wouldn't have cried out for help here. Take a deep breath and step away from the kitchen! I have to do that all the time!

Specific friend advice needed! Pic included
Chelenka replied to dreamscometrue's topic in Rants & Raves
Stop looking for any sort of validation from your "friend". She may never be able to give you the kind of response you are looking for. Let go of judgement and accept the relationship and person as she is. Just keep losing weight, looking/feeling fabulous and loving life and yourself. What a great victory to weigh perhaps 100lbs less by the time of her wedding! -
would ABSOLUTELY do it again! Best decision I ever made after marrying my husband! I had some minor complications immediately post-op with nausea but it was a reaction to the narcotic pain meds. I also have had reflux issues but I had that pre-surgery too.

Escaping the Trap of Emotional Eating
Chelenka replied to Prudence Ticknor's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Thank you for this truly useful tool to help battle the dreaded emotional eating urge! -
Pdxman you are a font of wisdom today! I think there are many people who think the WLS will be an easy fix. The want to stay knee deep in deNile! Confronting any sort of addiction-type behavior can be very painful and food-addiction is a tough one to crack because we all use food to comfort ourselves, for celebrations, whatever, any emotion will do really. To the OP you are well prepared it seems for your surgery. I didn't find this forum til about 1 month post-op. In a way I'm glad because I think all the info might have scared me away from the surgery. In order to go thru with it (I am very terrified of surgery in general) i really had to put my blinders on and focus on the finish line of the surgery. Of course that is really just the beginning. Best of luck to you!

Hi Bea: thanks for hosting another challenge! Sorry I'm weighing in a day late. Starting weight 227.2 Goal weight 220 - again. LOL!

Hi there. I was 1 year post-op on Feb 28th. While everyone's experience is unique, I can eat pretty much whatever type of food I want with a few exceptions. Very spicy and/or greasy fried foods don't agree with me and there is a fine line I try not to cross when it comes to sweets. (I have a sugar addiction issue) If I do give in to my addiction and have a very sugary treat it goes down no problem but then I feel like crap. I call it a mini-dumping syndrome. Even at this point I am still learning what works best for me. My capacity has increased slightly to approx 1 cup of food but that also depends on what the food is. I made a beef stew that I could only eat about 1/2 cup probably because of the dense protein. I can eat quite a lot of salad which isn't a bad thing. It is important to remember that this surgery doesn't cure your food issues. Now I must employ some self control and make good choices with food just like anyone else but the advantage of the surgery is that I can't eat anywhere near as much as I used to, nor do I want to. Sure, sometimes I'll see someone else's plate of nachos and think how much I would love to eat that but then I realize how I would be totally miserable if I tried and not to mention hate myself! LOL! There are a lot of surprising "slider" foods too, mostly simple carbs, like popcorn and potato chips, which don't fill you up like dense protein.

4 Things I Wish I Would've Known Pre Op
Chelenka replied to Tink22-sleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure how post-op you should start to enjoy food again 3-6 months post-op. I started to enjoy food a little too much at about 8 months post-op. -
I want to lose about 10lbs. I gotten within 5 lbs two weeks ago but went back up again. Not always sure why but sometimes I still sabotage my self. I am a sugar addict but also I've been trying a lot if new activities like jogging and a ballet barre class at my gym. Definitely have a lot of swelling whenever I do something new that pushes me physically. Also eating out makes me retain fluid. Probably the salt content plus I like to have a glass of wine which doesn't help. Sigh, just can't party like I used to!

You are ADORABLE!

Start weight 230.6 Goal originally was 225 but changed it to 220 when I hit 225 two weeks ago. However I bounced right back up again after that. 227.6 this morning so an overall loss of three lbs. Yesterday I was 226.5. Very, very frustratingly slow, see sawing to my goal. I don't lose steadily anymore. Guess that's the way it's gonna go. Thanks so much for doing this Bea!

Suzie 2.0! Thanks so much for your post! You are AWESOME!!!!

Very interesting. Might give it a try myself.

I get reflux at night and take a Nexium at bedtime. However, I had reflux before VSG too. I have also found a Tbsp on organic apple cider vinegar in my first glass of water in the morning helps a lot with reflux. Takes a bit of getting used to but it adds to your gut's population of good bacteria apparently. Seems counterintuitive but it has helped me.

Still hangin around. Struggling to get to my goal weight. I keep losing and regaining the same 4 lbs. Shades of pre-sleeve (involuntary shudder) except then it was more like 15-25lbs!

Follow A Sleever From Day 1 to 1 Year
Chelenka replied to Jerziegirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Be patient with yourself. You are doing great! I was exhausted for about a month post-op. Just part of the healing process I thought. -
I weigh in everyday and I've been up all week and am still up this morning at 228. I'm wondering if my 2/28 weigh-in of 225.2 was a fluke. Oh well, it is what it is and I can only go onward. It does seem to be my pattern now to wobble up and down a lot.

So I've begun to incorporate a bit of jogging into my walking and I feel like a galumphing fool. I'm slightly knock-kneed and pigeon-toed (really hot, right?) and I want to kick things up a notch. I'm trying to start with short intervals of jogging while walking on the treadmill or outside. I'm a bit concerned I might hurt myself. I've had knee problems for so long I never thought that I would ever try jogging but now that I'm so much lighter it doesn't seem to bother my knees but my hamstrings get a bit sore. Are there any websites some of you runners can point me to that can help me with better form or pre and post stretching etc.? Thanks!

Follow A Sleever From Day 1 to 1 Year
Chelenka replied to Jerziegirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I felt the same way after coming home. I was ravenous so that first week of clear liquids was hard. Hang in there. Try to keep your mind occupied with other things and that will help the time pass mire quickly. -
