Stall Question or Not Working Question
MKGlidewell replied to Winsong's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I stalled week 3 for two weeks! Since then I'll occasionally have a day of no lots followed by a big loss....it happens. I saw the most significant change when I started using the C25K app. Pounds falling of me now. 45.4lbs side June 3. Surgery was June 17th. I lost 4lbs last week...Best of luck! -

Protein panic attack
MKGlidewell replied to brittersmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try mixing silkened tofu or cottage cheese or kefir in your blender with fresh fruits. That became my only way of getting protein in because the mere thought of artificial sweetener sent my sleeve into a tailspin after surgery. I'm day 13 and I'm at my goal of 60 gm a day by doing this. They taste yummy too, and there's hundreds of combos of fruits and even veggies to mix with the proteins. Look up some recipes online :-) -

Never underestimate the power of a good...
MKGlidewell replied to Ah0505's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just a warning....this may be TMI....but.... I took a Tbsp of Milk of Magnesia last night and finally had a BM after 8 days! I'm 7 days post-op. It was small but I had been on mostly liquids pre-op 2wks and liquids for a week now...Didn't expect much but it was good to get it out :-) -
I'm still in the hospital. And I'm misarable
MKGlidewell replied to sprinkles13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had to stay an extra night in hospital because of nausea. Pretty bad heartburn, but seems to subsided with my omeprazole. Loritab suspension is working great. Trying to walk as much as possible. passed a clot through my drain last night. Nasty! Got drain out today before I went home. I feel really really bloated. ugh. Trying to get as many fluids as possible in. Protein is so incredibly filling...hoping to get more in tomorrow. Only got 8gms in today. Going to push for at least 20 tomorrow. Drank 6 cups of fluid today. going to really push for 8 tomorrow. ugh this is tough! -

Had VSG yesterday. Had a ton of gas pain. Felt like a heart attack! Found out Morphine makes me so sick and doesn't even touch my pain. Started vomiting blood..ugh Switched me to Dilaudid. Doing so much better now. Eating my ice chips SLOWLY. Been on 3 walks and doing well with my inspiration spirometer. Cough or sneeze or hiccup with a pillow squeezed to your stomach. I'm getting sleepy, but just wanted to check in. How are you all doing? Follow me on YouTube mkd117 or myfitness pal mkd117. peace and love! -

Pre op weight loss?
MKGlidewell replied to blondie1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 6 of my Pre-op diet. Down 12.4lbs. Very strict low carb/cal diet. Wasn't given a goal of carbs or cals, but following the roles of 2-3 shakes a day and only 1 meal (on a salad plate, no more than 4oz. meat and up to a cup of green veggies) has left me in the 600-800 calorie range and under 40 carbs. I've done well today, but think I overdid my activity level yesterday. Ugh major migraine all day today! Can only take Tylenol too... -

So I start my pre-op diet today. That means two weeks from today, June 17th, I'll be sleeved. Weighed in at 317.6 this morning. I have a YouTube channel that I'm hoping to document my beginning to end on. I'm a former pro wrestler turned med student. Recording all my intake on My Fitness Pal. If you're interested in seeing my page my user name is mkd117 on YouTube. There are just wrestling videos now, but soon I'll be posting a timeline Vlog of my sleeve surgery. From body slams to a slamming body! Best wishes to all my pre-op diet buddies this week!

By far the best protein you can buy is by a company called Dymatize and the brand is Elite Whey or Gourmet Elite Whey Casein blend. They have a ton of flavors, cappacino rush and milk chocolate are my favs. They have less than 150 calories per serving, anywhere from 20-24 grams of protein per serving, and less than 10 carbs. Also keep an eye out for the amount of cholesterol in your shakes. Walmart ones have a really high amount! Search Amazon 2 or 5# sizes available and free shipping or Nutraplanet.com 5#size only but cheaper than anywhere else.

What is it about a pre-op diet that reduces fat in the liver?
MKGlidewell replied to TexasRed1978's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ARTZ137 you are the winner. In order to get to the stomach the surgeon has to lift the liver. Anytime a laparoscopy is done they use the instruments to lift and move the, liver out of the way for a better view in that small space. The smaller the liver is the less force has to be put on it to retract it, which greatly reduces the chance of there being a tear or lasceration. Truly it is in everyone's best interest to do a pre op diet, not only to get your body used to relying on fewer calories and less food (reduces caloric/fat distress which can lead to hair loss) but also shrinks the liver which reduces the likelihood of a secondary complication. When it comes to a leak test...some docs do it, some don't do it right away. The rationale is that very very rarely do we leak immediately post stapling. It is usually within the 1st 24 hrs after we have been moving and what not. Your surgeon should most definitely do a barium swallow/upper GI the day after your surgery to check then for leakage, and to make sure the liquid will pass through your GI junction. Neverthelesss, you should wake up from surgery with a drain (hemovac) as a precautionary measure. If you do leak this drain will collect the infectious fluid and drastically reduce the complications of getting a leak and becoming septic. -
