    confused re:diet before surgery

They usually try to give you a little medication to help calm you, prior to putting you out. There are always going to be risks with anesthia, but most places now are using medications that are easier to reverse, they don't stay in your system as long. Anesthia is really getting better everyday. I would tell you to think about the risks of anesthia vs. the risk of your health if you stay overweight. I have had the experience with always vomiting after I wake up. So this last time, when I had a hysterectomy I spoke with anesthiologist and let him know how very concerned I was before the surgery. He reassured me that he would do everything he could to prevent it, and he did. He was great! So make sure you let them know how you feel, and see what they say. If they seem to understand and compassionate, yeah, if they don't, ask for another. You have that right!

    confused re:diet before surgery

I just saw my nutrionist this past week, and well they recommended they high protein, low carb, low fat, eating off a salad plate, no sugar, begin to cut out caffeine and sodas. They also recommended begging to sip water, and to not drink 30 minutes before, during or 30 minutes after a meal. And to try to not eat after 6 pm. And there will be a liquid diet before and after. The length of the pre-liquid diet will be up to the surgeon when I see him in 2 weeks. I am planning on more than less, since my liver is fatty and I have elevated enzymes. At first I was like WOW, but then I thought, this is how I should of been doing it all along and I wouldn't be here. Then I realized I have to comit now, because the band is only a tool, and it will require the same commitment, and if I can't do it now, why risk surgery? We would not be venturing down this road of surgical assistance if we were not ready to make a change! We have to quit using the word "DIET", this is life style changes and choices!!! We choose to be healthier, happier and we can only do it one day at a time. You know, we are like alchoholics, just using food.
  5. I am hoping for August as well. I am approved, have seen nutrionist, psych and attended education class. I see the surgeon July 13th!! I am sooo excited and nervous too.
  6. Hello everyone!! I have done nutritionist, psych, education and see the surgeon July 13, for an August schedule. Insurance approved!!YEAH!! I will be traveling 3 hours for mine. Which is not unusual living in rural New Mexico. I am trying to begin the low-carb diet they recommended, also trying to eat of a salad plate, practice chewing 23 times, elimnating caffeine and diet coke. I am attacking it bit by bit, piece by piece......I don't want to give up everything right at surgery, besides it helps me to start practicing!! I am depending on all you August banders to be my support group, we don't have in town. Best Wishes To All!!!

    I need some friends!!!

I would be happy to be your friend. I am in a small town in New Mexico, and I am driving out-of-town to have mine done. Surgery is approved by insurance, I have completed the nutrition and psych consult, and see the surgeon July 13 (YEAH), looking out August probably. We don't have really any support groups or meetings, so I am going to have to use this website. About me, 5'2", 234 lbs. Been dieting since I was 12 years old. I have a fatty liver, HTN, and I am predisposed to diabetes, and heart disease throught family, and I had gestational diabetes with my last child. On top of it all, I am an RN, so I know where I am headed if I don't change my ways soon. The wake-up call came for me this year, with my fatty liver and HTN. UH-OH! I am excited and nervous all together. This is going to be a huge change for me, one that is breaking family cycles. Everyone in my family LOVES to eat, and you can tell. I have two children 6 and 8, and a husband who are all very active, and I want to be too. I was once, a dancer! I have the support of my family, by their word, but it will be interesting to see how they act. I work for a very supportive cardiologist, who was the first person I ever met that his life did not revolve around food!! An inspiration really. I have a lot of friends, some I will have the support of, and some are overweight too, and I can tell already they may not be that supportive. I want to know what made this surgery be you final decision in how you would lose weight? For me, as I said earlier, it is for my health and for the first time in a very long time, it is for ME! I have failed in the past with many diets, and I can't seem to ever loose that vision I had of myself when I was younger and could do more, I.E.-exerecise, like I can do it now like I did when I danced! I have never had health complications due to my weight, until now and it was like Wake-UP! But, be realistic now, you need help too. Can't wait to here from you all!! Nperez
