Surgery or no surgery?
Recycled replied to southernsass's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The forum is great.....but.......maybe a little too impersonal and generic to get properly motivated. After you do some basic research.....Find a Surgeon's or local Hospital's Bariatric seminar and GO TO IT> Put the date and time in your phone.......set aside the time and GO!!!!!!!!!!! Don't procrastinate or make excuses.....GO. Once you do, it will get real and personal. You will finally have taken a step to actually change things. They will give you steps to proceed and one by one you will check them off making it more and more a reality. What may start as only an occasional thought in passing will quickly become a totally new life. But you have to GO. Don't put it off. Don't do it later or the next time. Do it NOW. -
Turn the tables.......walk up to her next time with your cell and video her rant.......then let her know you're sticking it on U-tube. She'll avoid you like the plague from then on.

Being a trainer doesn't make you an expert on...

I'm the best expert on nutrition. (for me that is). Cause only the stuff that I will actually eat is gonna count. -
OK,,,,,,Guys room.....Guy question....... Guy answer...- sgc's reply above is basically it. No big deal. If you're used to being on your own before the surgery, you'll be fine after. If you have pain and continue to take pain meds.......use an alarm clock for the med schedule. Take advantage of the opportunity and get plenty of rest. Get outside and walk around often. All easily done by yourself. The hospital is gonna make you have someone there to drive you home. That's pretty much all you need help with.

The best gauge for losing is the fit of your clothes. It they feel and look looser.....you're losing. I can tell immediately if I have gained or lost by how my clothes fit. They are also my motivation. And when they fit correctly or become loose....my biggest satisfaction. Plus the added bonus......when they get loose....you get to go buy new clothes. Pay no attention to the scale.

Checking off that List!

Make sure to go on the tour and you don't want to miss the show they have in ER #3. You're allowed two suitcases and a carry on.......... . I knew when I saw "suitcase in the first line it had to be a female. Relax, I'm just bustin your chops. And they wonder why it's said "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus." I walked in with shorts & a tee shirt on wearing flip flops. That's it. Traipsed around the halls in a gown for ten minutes ......put the shorts and tee back on for the remainder of my time there and left a couple of days later in the same clothes I waltzed in wearing. But, then again......I'm a guy. I don't think I own a suitcase. LOL What's my point......? I've been thru a few surgeries. For the sleeve, you're gonna be either walking the halls or sleeping. And you won't care about reading or texting or calling anybody......just sleeping or like the commercial for with the guy making the Donuts......" Time to make the Donu.....err "Time to walk the halls" You're gonna do just fine......enjoy the rest. Leave everything else at home. -
After sleeve when does Ghrelin start producing and at what rate? Does it return to preop levels?
Recycled replied to pegrae's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@Recycled Where are you getting your BMR from? The average BMR for a 64 year old man at 185 pound is 1685, so your eating is right on target. Where did you get 3000 from? That is the RMR of an obese person. Actually I'm 200 now, (my lowest was 185) And I'm not talking about RMR. That is based on doing nothing. I'm talking about metabolic rate and caloric intake based on my normal daily routine, which is quite active. But regardless, those are just numbers. My point is I have to either work alot harder now to burn off the same calories others consume, or I have to eat less then they do to avoid gaining. -

Here's the other revelation I found out after losing the weight........New studies seem to point to the fact that rapid large weight losses can change your body's metabolism pertinently. That after you lose the weight by consuming so many fewer calories per day......your new maximum daily calorie intake for maintenance at your goal weight will be much less than normal. Mine dropped from 3000 calories a day, which was considered average for someone of my goal weight to about 1700-1800. Any more and I started to gain. Figures......we just can't catch a break. Hey, it is what it is.......I save a ton on food. No regrets here. -

Mine returned between year one and two after surgery. Was great while it lasted. It's tougher now fighting cravings and hunger urges to keep the weight off, then during the whole initial losing period. I'm sure like everything relating to the body, each person's experience will be different. My advice is to really concentrate on solidifying your new healthly eating habits while you're losing. For me venturing off the path even a little resulted in weight gain. Gotta stick to the plan forever. -
Try this statistic on for size. 1. Remain morbidly obese - 90% guarantee of dying soon. 2. Do whatever it takes to not be morbidly obese - LIve ALOT longer.

Weight gain at 3 Years Post Op - WHAT TO DO?
Recycled replied to stefaniwg's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I'm two and half years out and have experienced the bounce and weight gain as well. It's hell getting it off. And to all those newly sleeved or early on offering advice.........thanks for the well intended advice, but it's not the same as at the beginning. We know and have already tried all the usual stuff. I feel for @@stefaniwg and what she is going thru. It is frustrating this far out when we think that we already KNOW what to do and then no matter what we do, it no longer works. I was at my wits end trying to lose some extra pounds, when I got sick from some unknown bug and lost 12 pounds. I'll take it however I can. Now I watch the pounds even more closely to avoid gaining. So, just food for thought newbies.......it may not be easy street farther out.......pay close attention. -
I always look forward to the toothpick delicacies, which allow me to check off a meal for free.....

Weight gain at 3 Years Post Op - WHAT TO DO?
Recycled replied to stefaniwg's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
It seems the new research shows that our metabolism has undergone a permanent change and is going to bite us in the ass if we get off track even a little. Why am I not surprised. It wasn't enough that we had to go to this extreme to get it off, but we have to now live by even stricter rules to keep it off. -
You have to be your own advocate in almost everything now days. The ones you put your trust in because they are the professionals have become just too enveloped in routine complacence. I just went to a Urologist because of some back pain and my history of kidney stones. I researched this Doc and he is supposed to be the best urologist and surgeon in the entire region. After 1 1/2 hour wait, saw him for 2 minutes. I had blood in urine so he had his assistant do an ultrasound.....found nothing. Sent me for CT scan. Did CT scan at local hospital. (I always ask for a copy on disk). Later that day I call the docs office to find the results of CT scan. They tell me urologically unremarkable. Meaning, nothing found. I review the scan myself and of course, I find stones in both Kidneys. A week later I go in to Doc's for a follow up and when I question them about the scan results, they tell me they usually rely on the radiologist report. So, the great Doc I chose to see, doesn't even read the CT scan he sends me to. I tell them I'm upset they didn't even look at the scan and I disagree with the radiologist. I'm pissed. So, after waiting two hours this time.....the Doc makes an appearance and pacifies me by looking at the scan. Well....la de da !!! Stones in both kidneys. Uh, ummm gee whiz.....they see alot of scans.......duh.... a ton of excuses. Two appointments with the supposed best Doc in the area, and a couple thousand dollar CT scan and a professional radiologist......and they are all incompetent and would have done nothing without my researching it myself. REALLY. This is what is has become.....a money making business only. No regard for accuracy or the patient's care. So, moral of story is........You better look out for yourself. ........always.

All fuel used to be Ethanol free. (gas that they didn't add Ethanol) Now that they have added Ethanol (which is crap) to the gas......they charge more for the gas that is Ethanol free....(the stuff that they don't have to add anything to) Go figure. We get ripped off no matter what.
