Congrats and welcome!! It is a tough journey, especially at first, but like you said, each day gets better!

Depending where you are post op. if you are on normal foods, then sure, it's a great source of protein, not to mention it's a complete protein! I eat it and i'm 2 months out. It's never given me any issues.

Can I whine for just a minute? ;)
magpie30 replied to cinward2001's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, we've all been there, and it's perfectly acceptable to whine and vent! Just hang in there, whine all you need to. And yoru right knowing that it will get better in the future doesn't help much for in the now. *hugs* -
Mirena IUD vs. Birth control pills
magpie30 replied to Red_lips_and_confidence's topic in The Gals' Room
I had Mirena for 3 years after having my son and the insertion was uncomfortable but nothing awful. I had no issues while it was in and my periods were so pathetic that a panty liner was all that was needed. However, when i had it removed was when i found out the problem. The removal was super easy, takes like 2 seconds. Hubby and i were trying for another baby, well after a year of trying with no results i went to see the doc. They did tests, they did say i barely qualify as having PCOS but that wasn't the problem. The problem was that i had nearly no uterine lining. Now this is one of the ways Mirena works, is by thinning out the lining so if by chance a fertilized egg does get past it's other defenses, you don't get prego. Well, in some people it can take a very long time for that lining to build back up. It took my body 2 years to get back to "normal", and the OBGYN did tell me that that is an issue with Mirena, but they didn't tell me about that before i got it when i was talking about it with them. i never had any issues with my period pre Mirena. On the other hand my doc sis tell me that they have been finding that BC pills are not as effective after WLS. They aren't sure why with the sleeve, as absorption isn't really the issue. So that is my experience with it, a friend of mine also had teh same thing happen to her and she is pretty skinny. Weight the pros and cons, and i hope whatever you decide works beautifully for you!! -
could be hormonal imbalance. try taking evening primrose oil. It helps. I used it for a while when i was having a similar issue.

Yeah, i was thinking something very similar, but also don't want to get kicked ! But that was probably one of the best responses i've ever seen!! LOL -
Sleeved 5/16/13 but weight loss is slow
magpie30 replied to KrysMom271's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My husband was the same, he was sleeved back in October, and he didn't start losing weight near the end of the second week. Remember, there is no "normal" Only what is "normal for you". Congrats on your sleeve and good luck to you!! -
Way to go on being down 50lbs! That is awesome!!!! to he!! with what anybody else thinks or says, you are taking major steps to better health and that is something to be very very proud of. I understand that when people are rude when you are feeling really good about your progress it's quite a blow, but just think how far you have come in 2 short months! They know nothing, forget them and keep rocking that sleeve!!!

Nuts are a good healthy food to eat they provide lots of good things for your body, including protein. But as joatsaint said, they are very high in fat and calories, so just make sure you don't overdo it. Almonds and Pistachios are some of my favorites, and i use them as snacks between meals. I can only eat about 5 almonds, and 7 or 8 Pistachios, so it's all good.

Newbie... Just starting my journey
magpie30 replied to shygrl87's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had to see a NUT for 6 months, then be approved for the surgery by my surgeon and the hospital then they submitted to insurance. We heard back about a month later, and then i got my date set. so between my initial NUT visit and surgery date it was about 8 or 9 months. -
agree with bradycone, after that it's really individual tolerance. I can drink about 6oz of coffee, any more than that and it bothers my stomach.

What are your "go-to" foods?
magpie30 replied to dma2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
String cheese, is a main staple. Meat balls also are great to keep on hand. For the early weeks on solids, tuna salad was a major staple. egg salad is also good, but i've never been very fond of it. cottage cheese and yogurt are also very good. -
Fingers crossed!! I hope you get the go ahead!!

My NUT said that at about 6 months, i could do corn on the cob. Simply because corn is hard to digest. i'v had corn not on the cob though, and i figure, that's pretty much the same, and i did fine eating it. Granted i didn't eat a whole lot of it, but still i didn't have any issues with it. How far out are you?

Post op diet. No restrictions
magpie30 replied to krystalt313's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was allowed soft solids at 3 weeks, and then at 4 weeks was allowed all foods except breads/grains and salads. Like the others above have said, start slowly with moist soft things, like tuna, canned chicken then work your way up to other things, grilled chicken etc. My NUT recommended that i have a bite of sweet potato or something with the mean to help moisten it. Eggs are a great one, but my stomach didn't like them for the first few weeks. It's really trial and error, so if there is something you want try a small bite of it, chew it very well and wait a bit. if that sits well have another. Good luck! -
Clear liquid day before surgery
magpie30 replied to heatwhip's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hang in there! You are so close, it's only for a day, you can do it!!! -
I never see ads on my computer, i didn't even know there were any on this site! Ask any computer smart person how to make that happen for you, it's not hard, my hubby does it to all our families computers. i'd have to ask him what it's called, but it works great!

Newbie and Getting Sleeved TODAY....
magpie30 replied to QueenAmandy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome!! Very excited for you to begin your journey, and know that we are always here for you if you need to vent, whine, or ask a question that has already been asked 100 times. This is a difficult endeavor but one that is well worth it! Just remember the saying "Nothing worth doing ever comes easy". Good luck to you! -
Newbie needs some advice please :)
magpie30 replied to albertagirl's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I don't know, that's cutting it pretty close. Everybody is different but it seems that most people needed around a week and a half before they started to feel human again. The pain isn't usually the issue, but the fatigue can really get you. I went shopping with my mom about a week out and just walking around stores slowly, i was so exhausted that i slept for nearly the next 2 days. Also, you won't really be able to eat anything but clear or full liquids. You also will not be able to submerge in water for the first 3 weeks, so no pools, hot tubs baths etc. -
perhaps the potatoes are a slider food for you. My NUT recommended adding unflavored protein powder to the potatoes. That might help you feel some fullness, otherwise, maybe try something else a bit more nutritious, like yogurt, or cottage cheese.
-
possibly, but i don't think it would still be there over an hour later. I use Barilla Plus protein pasta, 2 oz has 10 grams of protein. Now i can still only eat about 1/3 cup but i've never had problems with that.
-
Everybody's sleeve size is different, as our stomachs all start out different sizes. So you may be able to eat more than person A, but less than person B. As long as you take it slow, and follow your docs advice, you'll be just fine!
-
highly likely just overdoing it and not enough protein, water could be part of it too.. it's hard at first when you are feeling better, to not over do it but try to take it easy, your body needs to rest. Remember you have just had major surgery and your body is trying to figure out what happened, and how to make the proper adjustments to keep you healthy. Just try to lay low for a few days, walking but take it easy.

Sleeping ALL the time!
magpie30 replied to journeybegins05032013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it could also be that you aren't getting enough protein, that will make you feel weak and tired all the time. How much protein are you getting in a day?
