Pictures of my hairloss 18 weeks after surgery
Macy6 replied to Sleevestriss's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This makes me happy. I have thick hair and usually have it thinned a few times a her, but I stopped last December in preparation hoping it will even out. -
Hello! I know there are far more of us, but since I just found this thread I would guess they just haven't found us yet! I am doing great! My surgery went quite smoothly, I had a liver biopsy at the same time and my surgery last one hour LESS than what my surgeon anticipated. When I woke up, the first thing I did was look at the clock, I expected it to say 5:30 and it said 4:30 and my first thought was "OMG I didn't get sleeved, my liver was too big" I spent two nights in the hospital, I was quite proactive in my fluids and walking and even when I felt like I was slacking they said I was doing quite well. I was told many times that I was doing the best out of all of us who had surgery on that day (my surgeon performed 3 himself and assisted on at least one that I know of, plus he has two other surgeons in his clinic. I was released the 29th and spent the next couple of days pretty well medicated. I attempted to focus on protein those first few days and I quickly gave up, I was determined not to get dehydrated so I 100% focused on water and by day 5 met the minimum goal of 65oz, by day 10 I topped out at 108oz of water and realized I was using water to make up for my lack of food. I started protein on day 11 and did well getting that in with protein shakes hitting 60oz those last few days of full liquids. I started fork soft/mush foods on the 9th at my 2 week appt (really 13 days) the first day I hit my nutritionists goals of 900 calories and 89g of protein but I realized I had a lack of water for the day, I have evened out and now I am hitting around 700 calories and 60g of protein a day. I would have to say that I have what might be considered a sleeve of steel (I call it my worm) besides some lactose issues on days 5-7 after surgery I have had absolutely no issues consuming anything I have tried. I am happy with my progress so far, I am down just over 15lbs down since the day of surgery and just over 25lbs since the day I started my pre op diet 10 days before surgery. Things slowed down substantially around day 6, I have lost .2 to .4 a day since, I am not terribly concerned 12# in 6 days plus 12# of water weight (yes 12#!!!) so I literally lost 24# in 6 days ha ha. Anyway I know things will pick up as I balance my calorie intake and protein intake. Things are going great, I can't believe how smoothly everything is going. Hope you all are doing well!

I have been struggling since surgery. I have always struggled to leave it on, and tend to rip it off around the four hour mark, in my sleep. Since surgery.... I have averaged 90 minutes a night. I am not sure what is going on. Makes me crazy.

I wish I had! Mine just barely hit my bed, I taped my cord to it!

I have avoided them, the funny thing is yesterday I got an iced tea from Sonic when I was out and about and never thought anything about it I just drank it. I didn't have any issues with gas etc because of it. I don't make it a habit because I was told not to but there are plenty of people on here who use them and were never given the restriction.

Oh my gosh I would have been leery too! I asked out of curiosity and I agree I would be hesitant to go without one. Seems to set you up for more complications, such as strictures. My surgeon answered but just kind of shook his head when I asked. Told me that sometimes forums can give out too much information haha.

Your body.... your choice! You should NOT be embarrassed! I personally chose to tell very few (Best friends, parents, child) until insurance approval, once I had insurance approval I opened that circle a little wider (family, friends, school.... those who would be effected by my surgery or hurt that I didn't tell them) the day of surgery, high on morphine, laid up in the hospital, 4 hours after surgery... I came clean TO EVERYONE... I had created a Face Book page that I had posted many many notes on, the notes included everything from who my surgeon is, his education, every question I asked him, every book and website I had been on, what the surgery entails, and what brought me to bariatric surgery. So when I came clean I asked everyone to join that page, if they chose too, so I don't have to overwhelm my FB page with weight loss stuff if they aren't interested. I can not tell you the positive reactions I have received.... amazing amazing people I have in my life. Positive words of encouragement, I even found out a friend had bariatric surgery years ago and I had no clue. Is it meant for everyone? no, but I don't regret it. It took a lot, but you know what I needed to put myself out there. I have to hold myself accountable and I need to do this, this is it.... my chance to take my life over!

Do you take prilosec or anything like that? Another thing is do you notice this happens after you eat or drink too much?
-
It depends on where the medications are broken down and absorbed at. I can take both of my antidepressants and one is an extended release, without crushing etc... and they absorb the way they are supposed to. I am not familiar with the way those medications are broken down and absorbed, but my PA at my Bariatric Clinic is brilliant and had all the answers for me. Definitely a question for your surgeon, or their office! Good Luck!

You will most definitely know. I was temporarily, and it was terrible. Very gassy, I mean you feel like your bowels are going to explode and diarrhea.

4 days before surgery and 3 days before my final weigh in I went to a music festival in my town. I could not believe the crap they had, and I was on my pre op diet. Mind you my pre op diet was not as strict as some but I still had to be careful and there was NO screwing that up! I did good, I did eat but I chose a taco salad and held the shell one day and the second day I did a bread less Philly cheese steak. My cousin is trying to save up to open a food truck and I told him the only way he can is if I get to create a HEALTHY option dish for it! -
Everyone is different. I have been able to take 8oz of water or more in a sitting (over 5-10min) since 7 days post op. Shakes are slower, 11oz in an hour. I can't gulp (made the mistake once, it won't happen again) I tolerate all water temps. My surgeon and nutritionist and nurse seemed more pleased with my water intake than anything. Day 10 post op I took in 108oz of water and realized I was using water as food. I've stuck with 65oz since and between 30 min before, 60 after, 5 mini meals a day, 65 is pushing it.

lump sensation in my throat
Macy6 replied to ElyQuint's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was having exactly the same problem. I thought it was related to thrush (that appeared about 10 days post op) but the thrush cleared up and the lump stayed. I decided to try an allergy pill and took a Zyrtec. The lump was gone by morning. I have taken it daily since and had nothing. I think I was having post nasal drip, after surgery I had a week of crazy runny noses and sneezing. Not sure if you take anything but it never hurts to give it a try. You can get generic for $.89 at Walmart. And just FYI I described my lump as having a cotton ball in my throat, I wanted to cough up something that wasn't there. -
okay, now i'm just angry - psych eval failure1

I am sorry you are having to deal with this. I feel psychiatry is so objective. It is difficult for anyone person to absolutely know what is going on in someone else's head, unless you are that person. I too have dealt with Major depression (for nearly two years) and generalized anxiety. I had gone back to my physician in January when I felt a relapse coming on, that was the appt when she referred me for bariatric surgery. Don't give up! Persevere, good things come to those who wait. I wish I could make it better, but I can't! I do wish you all the luck in the world. -
Sounds good to me! My goal is 24.5#

Yeahhhhhh, my physician wanted me to wait until December after graduation. I took a pretty big risk, and I knew it. I wasn't concerned about being ready for clinicals come time, with how crappy I have felt in my past few clinicals, I knew if I had any loss that the energy gained from that loss would help to make up for the decrease in energy from surgery. I honestly had to weigh my decision on risking having a complication and putting my nursing career on hold, but I had more of a fear of getting a job after graduation and than having surgery, a complication and loosing said job. I had, had surgery before and knew I bounced back pretty quick so I was hoping for a repeat. I have been very lucky in my recover, I have been up and going and getting my fluids in since day 4. Hitting protein goals, I am still getting tired mid afternoons but the days are getting easier. I also can't believe how much easier things are with 24# gone in the past 3.5 weeks. And the best part.... as much as I hate my lovely white scrubs.... They are SO much baggier :-) -
dandy ha ha.... That's auto correct for you!

Well I am two weeks post op as of today. I went back to school last Thursday and it wiped me out. Thankfully I only have class once a week. I start my final clinical rotation in the NICU when I am 5 weeks post op. I have lost 34# since the start of this journey in January, with 24 in the past 24 days. Hoping to be down another 10-15 by the time I start my rotation. Ready to close the door on the nursing school journey, it has been blood sweat and tears to get here and I am ready to go into the next part of my life. I am just happy I can go into the next part of my journey a little healthier. -
How much do you save on food?
Macy6 replied to Mrs.FullerRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just released to mush/fork soft foods yesterday. It has been a change getting used to the portion sizes. 1/4C is so tiny. My brain wants to load the plate... I made pasta-less manicotti last night. It was delicious and hit the spot, when I put it on my plate it was so tiny. I looked over at my dads plate and he had his normal portion, which would have been my portion just a few weeks ago, it was so strange.
