Life expectancy, cancer, fears, oh my!
luckysmomma replied to StawberryBlond's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand your fears. They are very understandable especially with your family history. I would advise you to go to a seminar & ask questions. Make an appointment with different surgeons and ask questions. Make a pro & con list about wls. Read, research, and if choose to have this surgery, start making life changes like drinking the shakes, stopping the soda, and starting the exercise - now - not after surgery - because wls is tough and hard work. I know what three different doctors told me about life expectancy after wls and I know what the paperwork at my hospital stated about life expectancy that I signed just before wls surgery, but I don't get into specifics about that on these threads anymore about what my doctor informed me about it because I get called everything from a liar to a crazy person. If you choose the wls route and pick a surgeon, he/she will talk to you about life expectancy, at least my doctor did. I really liked her brutal honesty about it. It was one of the reasons I picked her; she didn't hold back on anything. She truly discussed all the negative with me more than she did the positives. I wish you all the best. Good luck. -

We're you ever thin before surgery?
luckysmomma replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was a big baby (9 plus pounds and 22 inches long). I was a tall child, but not heavy. In 2nd grade, I came down with a childhood illness, got really sick (allergic) and began to put on weight and kept putting it on throughout elementary. Middle school years the weight skyrocketed. I lost about 100 lbs before high school...trying every diet out, mostly using WW, & exercising constantly. I stayed 150-160 throughout my high school years & at my height, I was a perfect weight & never enjoyed one day of it...felt I had to be 120-125 lbs because of all the supermodels in the late 80s/early 90s who were my height and weighed less than 120. I continued trying every diet out there & the exercise. In college, I regained all that weight & then some. Just losing 20-30 lbs here and there, only to regain. After college, I lost it again using mostly WW, but not all of it - never got back to my high school weight...really had to work at it. I used WW for most of this weight loss. I got married..vicious cycle of gain/lose, gain/lose with WW...but again, I never got back to the high school weight. I lost 100 for the third time about 10 years ago & regained it after an accident & a permanent injury. Now, with wls, I have lost a little over 80 lbs. So, yes, once upon a time I was thin before surgery, but I never realized it or got to enjoy it...I WILL enjoy it this time around! -

So sorry to hear about all the losses mentioned here - my heart goes out to each of you above. To the original poster, take it day by day, meal by meal. You can do this. Hang in there. Sometimes it is baby steps...focus on your protein, your water, and your exercise. I agree totally with has been said about stress here...we can't let stress win! Best of luck to you.
