    july 2013 sleevers

the staff told me some people need to shrink their livers before surgery. to make it easier to get to the stomach. hence the 2 week liquid diet. depends on how much you weigh and your liver chemistry blood tests. and of course the doctor. i just have to do a liquid diet for 24 hours before surgery. everytime i get antsy about it, i think about my friend's H who did a 40 day juice fast! lol

here is a super basic article on fat requirements. you should eat 30-60 grams of good fat per day. at least half of which should be "raw." i am aiming for 2tbsp of coconut oil per day during phase one, sinceits liquid at body temp. http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/family-nutrition/facts-about-fats/why-you-need-fats

what i said was, if you dont get enough of the right kinds of FAT you are creating the conditions of malnutrition in your body and this is what causes hair to fall out. you can ge an abundance of lean or fat free Protein and still be starving. i am only concerned the liquid phase of post op diet. mostly i am just nervous cause i am nervous and need something to focus on. if you are wanting Gelatin in your diet (speeds healing and allows the body to better use protein) make bone broth. look up recipes online. incredibly nurishing and yummy too. Jello..... the nutritional aspects.... not much. i did make jello for my daughter when she had the stomach flu with unflavored knox and raspberry-hibiscus tea. it wasn't nearly as sweet as jello, but she enjoyed it. the stash's raspberry hibiscus tea is so sweet it doesnt need sugar or honey. i am planning on making popsicles with unsweetened herbal green tea. i wont have to share them with my kids! lol

good fat is important too. avocado and coconut oil. milk, meat and eggs from grass fed organic animals. you can eat all the protein you want, if you dont eat any fat, you will be malnurished. that why so many lose their hair.

are you getting enough good fats and protein? are you being followed by a nutritionist? sounds like a vitamin deficiency to me.

    wow

oh, i forgot to say, if your liver enzymes are elevated from drinking, your doc will need those to be normal before surgery. 6-8 weeks totally sober is about what you would need depending on how high they are. did he/she say anything about your liver profile?

    Good girl/Bad girl....grocery shopping

i was told i was not supposed to gain weight while getting ready for surgery. however in the last 5 weeks i was on prednisone twice for unrelated things. which totally makes you hungry and can lead to weight gain. i am required to track all of my food or the nut. to review. i cannot be cleared for surgery until i can show that i know how to plan healthy balanced meals. i can see that some days i do well, and others i eat like total crap with way too many calories. when i went for my appt last week i had gained 2.4#. but the nut. didnt say anything. *shrug*

    wow

because wls is considered elective, the docs are obligated to reduce your post op risks as much as possible. heavy drinking, twice a month is risky, just like smoking or eating raw shellfish. make your doc a deal. tell him or her you can stop drinking entirely now. if you arent sucessful, you'll agree to out patient treatment before surgery.

    AFTER SURGERY THEN WHAT?

have you done any reading online about the post op eating plan? my hospital has a website for the bariatric surgery center, and the lists on the site are pretty explicit about what you can eat when.

    Anyone from Rochester, NY?

hey pandabear, my doctor, emily, does the medifast program. apparently, you can lose the same pound a day on the progam a the surgery. look her up online and give her a call. she is sweet and very supportive and she is your coach for the program. starla, i dont know what t tell you. as i havent had the surgery yet, but we used this CD with my husband before he had surgery a few years ago. it helped him a lot, as he is a very anxious person. you can download stuff like this cheeper than the CDs btw. http://www.amazon.com/A-Meditation-Promote-Successful-Surgery/dp/1881405346

was it your insurance company or the docs that didnt approve you? what hospital are you with? a friends housemate has been turned down a couple of times at RGH. she has switched to highland and is much happier. not approved yet, but at least she doesnt feel like she is being treated unfairly.
