wheat, carbs my dr said NO, NO!

read the book. then make up your own mind. we eat mostly paleo here. my H is gluten free, cross reacts to a lot of what is in processed GF products and also suffers from terrible carbo cravings. so we eat mostly paleo. not entirely, but my H is much healthier without the grains and processed crap. he has a sugar problem too, so i try not to keep stuff in the house that he can binge on. but you need to feel positive about whatever post op eating plan you choose. otherwise you wont stick to it. if you read the book and it makes sense to you, go for it. if not, find some other healthy eating plan that does make sense to you.

I'm having a bit of a tough time

you might want to look at the check lists online for adult ADHD. i have found there are very few professionals who know much about adult ADHD. so my PCP and i researched it together and she is comfortable treating me herself. she sent me to someone who she sends kids to for assessments and without asking me a single question about my childhood experiences, symptoms or anything else decided i was "probably not ADHD" because i had graduated from college. huh? i refused to even pay him my copay and when my doctor asked him for an in writing assessment, he said i needed 500$ "tests" before he could do anything! what a hack! anyway, my point, you're smart, research it yourself and then come to your own conclusion. it might very well impact your recovery, so its worth looking into. adults with AdHD are much more likely to be overweight, since food can play a big role in helping us cope.

I'm having a bit of a tough time

are you ADHD? just wondering. you seem a lot like me. i have ADHD. i have gotten treatment for it for the past several years. BUT it's a huge part of my eating issues. and so i am frequently running up against it in dealing with life without overeating. it's not something that magically goes away, it's a lifetime issue and understanding how it affects me post op is required for my recovery.

    *Gastric sleeve diet* (without surgery)

yeah, i have a friend who tried to do a super low calorie diet and she was SO HUNGRY and ended up binging repeatedly. is there a reason you can't do a moderate reduced calorie diet? like 1400-1600 cal diet with a exercise? the more you exercise, the more of a calorie deficit you will have. when losing weight without WLS, you want to aim for a slow steady weight loss over a sustained period of time. the slower you lose... 4-6 pounds a month, the more likely you will be to actually keep it off long term. the V-trim diet is an excellent diet for people who can track and follow their eating and exercise. try googling it. in the mean time, try tracking everything you eat... cut out the crap and processed carbs and you should make some headway.
  5. sorry i missed that you do do exercise every day. even more reason to start getting enough nutrients in. it's not about blood sugar levels, it's about not keeping your body in starvation mode.
  6. you aren't getting enough Protein or Water or calories. all of these things contribute to very low metabolism. meaning your body burns very few calories. which means you are in a prolonged stall. 3 things will keep your metabolism fired up: exercise, (daily) protein 60-80 grams (you need to be tracking every gram of protein you put in your mouth), water, 64 ounces. (also tracking) you need to know how many calories you are getting by tracking your input. best if you get a device that will track out put too. a fit bit or body bug will do this for you. none of this will change if you get the bypass. requirements for bypass are the same. daily exercise, protein and water. it's not a mystery why you are not losing. you are not being compliant with your post op diet and exercise. there is a REASON we are ALL told to get in exercise, protein and water. to lower your fasting blood sugar, exercise. every single day. and i am on thyroid medication too. it has not prevented me from losing weight. my blood levels are fine.

    The Uncomfortable Truth....

only you can do the interior work ness to feel better about yourself. even skinny people feel shame and low self esteem. losing weight doesn't make you suddenly not have these issues anymore. there are workbooks out there, therapists and counselors. get some help! in the meantime, journal about how feeling bad about yourself has lead you to overeat. identify your "bad messages." write them down. look at them in back and white. then write down better messages. practice saying these better messages to yourself when the bad ones creep in. be prepared for when these thoughts automatically show up. you can do this! this is how we stop being overeaters on the inside too. this time you are swallowing lies about yourself. they are making you just as sick.

    *Gastric sleeve diet* (without surgery)

its pretty simple, 60-80 grams of protein, 64 ounces of water. veggies after that, then fruit then carbs. avoid pasta, rice, soft doughy bread and other highly processed carbs. no more than 15 grams added sugar at one time. no soda pop. simple, but not easy. good luck.
  9. do you exercise? how much protein, added sugars and carbs are you eating each day? how much water? what kind of diabetes do you have? type one or two. there is someone in my support group with type two and she has lost 70+ pounds since july with the sleeve. so i dont think its the diabetes. what are your daily BGLs like?

    Found an interesting Blog

and its not like the people having this surgery are in good health. most of us have co-morbitities. they are called this because they are serious conditions, not annoyances. my surgeon was very clear at orientation... the heavier you are, the more co-morbitities, the higher the risk of complications or death. he shoots straight from the hip and didnt sugar coat anything.

5 months post op and salad?

what are the experiences of people with raw veggie salad? i am 5 months PO today and craving salad big time. unsure of raw veggies.... my PO diet says "cooked and raw vegetables as tolerated." and then it lists a few fibrous ones you should avoid. thats it. input would be great.

    The Uncomfortable Truth....

i havent read all the replies. not by a long shot. ha! but i will chime in with this, i have a friend who lost 150 pounds with diet and exercise. she's been on the cover of numerous magazines (her husband lost 150 pounds too), on the today show, the doctors, got a book offer, has done several cardio hooping DVDs, etc. she struggles internally with the sam exact stuff i do. she struggles with shame over her body, past and present, with thoughts of how she is not good enough, how big a failure she is, how not to eat her feelings away, how to live not defending herself in her head all the time. my point is, its all about being able to be brutally honest about what food was doing for us what we couldnt do for ourselves. being better is all about learning to cope and thrive without depending on food to make it all go away, and how i became the person who needed to make it all go away. she talks a lot about fat thinking. thinking like the person she used to be. making choices that needed to be coped with with food. seeing herself and her life a something that needed to be medicated. of course, both of us have only become aware of this AFTER losing weight. recovery for me is not losing weight. recovery for me is about me learning how to look at all of this very honestly (no hiding allowed!) and see it for what it really was and is. once, a woman online had a crush on me, she send me a box of things like a scarf, some dried fruit, a journal and a thic nah han (sp?) CD. it was 3 CDs, but all i remember from it was him talking about the still pond perfectly reflecting the moon. if our hearts are calm he said, we can clearly see what is happeing around us and in us. but ripples in the pond create distortions. so every week, when i go to yoga, i set my intention as stillness. each week i strive towards it. i want to live my life without any more distortions.

Rate Of Weight Loss, Those Starting Under 200 Lb?

your body is in starvation mode. not enough calories and protein. ease up on the exercising and track your food to make sure you are getting enough in. when the NP at the hospital found out i was doing yoga, swimming, walking and dancing... she told me no vigorous cardio (i'm not) until i was eating 1000 cal or more a day. you need a fitbit or bodybug to track how many calories you are burning at work plus working out. if you are too far into negative calorie land... your body just shuts down and hangs on to every ounce. get some data and then you will know what to do.
  17. when you can only fit a tiny bit in your stomach, why is it a problem ("extreme") that you are hungry? it seems normal to me. and healthy that you eat when you are hungry. feeling hungry is a subjective state, it seems hard to measure it or decide what is "normal." if you feel hunger, eat. eat protein first. make sure you are getting enough water. as long as you are losing, it doesnt matter if you feel hungry frequently. how you respond is what matters.
  18. my doctor and hospital say there is a 20% failure rate across the board with WLS. 80% success rate is way higher than diets, but for the person who regains.. thats a 100% failure. my research said that in the past, vsg was a preliminary step for very very obese patients who were too sick for bypass. then they discovered that some people were able to lose a lot of weight with it. again, my doc said 70-80% of excess weight lost with vsg and 80-90% of excess weight lost with rnybp. he recommends that people with more than 100 pounds to lose get bp, but really, he leaves it up to he patient unless there is a medical reason to pick one over the other.

5 months post op and salad?

i would do baby greens, which are very nutritious, but not very filling. i stay away from raw brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, etc) because i am hypothyroid.

    Gluten/Wheat allergy Celiac disease

primal and paleo diet recipes are all gluten free too. i find them much healthier than regular old gluten free recipes. i grew up eating gluten free. my mom was diagnosed in 1961. no GF products back then, my husband has been gluten free since the spring. paleo and primal works best for us... no processed carbs. protein and veggies for the most part.

    New Foods For My Diet

i would go with high quality fats rather than carbs. coconut, organic butter, nut butters, whole organic milk. a little goes a long way. mixed with high quality protein and veggies this should keep you full. track to make sure you are getting enough protein, 25-60 grams of good fats and 25 grams of fiber.
