  1. my hospital's stats are 80% success rate with wls. (they define success as losing and keeping off 75% of the excess weight for 3 years) think its all about how well prepared you are. if you are able to see how you need to change your relationship with food and how you move your body BEFORE the surgery, you stand a good chance of being successful. the thing is, people fail because they are non compliant with food and exercise. usually because you were not prepared to make these changes when you had the surgery. you can demonstrate this readiness by behavioral changes, saying you are ready and actually being ready are two different things. i see people who are still eating the same crap food, not exercising and still using food to cope with life. and a lot of them are still losing weight since its early in the game... eventually this will catch up with them OR they will change. there is an old saying in 12 step groups... grow or go, meaning if you dont change, both internally and externally you will continue down the same path you were on, no matter how sincere you are. i hope this is helpful. the sleeve will force you to make some changes, but in the long run, if you dont work at making more significant changes, you will regain.
  2. you will be so glad they can take it out.

    sleep apnea?

FWIW, my hospital does require a sleep sudy for everyone prior to surgery.

    sleep apnea?

the nose pillows are very comfortable actually. and my machine is very quiet. the only thing that was bad was when it was hot in the bedroom at night and i would sweat everywhere it touched my face. ick.

    sleep apnea?

i was dx with sleep apnea after a sleep study 3 years ago. my husband complained i snored so loud i woke him up. he said he could even hear me in the other room. since i was already tired all the time, i didn't really have a clue. i got my machine, i hated it!!! it took me 6 months to get used to sleeping with it. but i could never fall asleep with it on. i would fall asleep, my H would nudge me when i started snoring and i would put it on. it was automatic after a while. one good thing was, in the winter, cause of the moist air, my sinus issues went away. it was a good thing. i always hated it but i used it so my H could sleep and sleep in the same room as me. also, the studies showing how sleep apnea is associated with early death scared me. my dad, he had horrible sleep apnea... long before CPAP machines. he had his first heart attack at 53, his fatal one at 56 when i was 15. so i sucked it up and used it. it's the same reason i had my surgery. i didnt want to die like my dad. after my surgery, in recovery, they said as long as i had O2, i was fine. i didn't use my machine in the hospital and dont use it now. my H says i do not snore now. being retested would likely be a good idea, but i don't know if the insurance company would agree to pay for testing me if i dont have any symptoms anymore, yk?

    in a funk....

you might be depressed. call your regular doc for an appt. best to not ignore it. have you ever been to counseling?
  10. if this is the case, seek couples counseling. it sounds like your partner has some insecurities that are making him fearful and act out. you should be able to find a gay-friendly therapist pretty easily.

    So many emotions.

my father died from obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure when i was 15. no amount of money could bring him back. he is dead and he never saw me graduate high school or college, never saw any of my career accomplishments, never saw me get married, met my husband or met his two amazing grandchildren. crap, i never even got the chance to have an adult conversation with him! if your BMI is nearly 60, chances are, you are on the very same path as my dad. i know i was, i had my surgery to save my life. i dont give a shit what size pants i wear. i just didnt want to die and leave my kids the way my dad left me. if you cant see spending the money for yourself, do it for your kids and husband. cause to die from something you could have changed is really horrible, yk? every time i go to yoga class and my teacher asks us to think about what we are grateful for, the first thing that comes to my mind is my sleeve surgery, cause i know i was given the gift of another chance at life. that is a very precious gift indeed. go ahead and grab your chance and spend the money, just be triple sure you are ready to follow your aftercare plan, cause you likely wont get a third change at a new life..... and your kids need you.

Gluten Intolerant and Sleeve, Anyone have and advice?

schar makes a lot of products that people seem to like. the problem with schar is most of their stuff is corn based, which isnt a good choice for a lot of people with gluten/wheat issues.

Gluten Intolerant and Sleeve, Anyone have and advice?

i avoid must of that stuff. sometimes i make stuff with almond flour, but i dont bother with baking, etc. its not the kind of stuff my H or i need to eat. we stick mostly with protein, veggies, some fruit and the occasional protein shake. for snacks my H eats greek yogurt and nuts and seeds mixed with a small amount of dried fruits and dark chocolate. makes my life easier and leaves less pans for us to wash.

    Failure!

well, you seemed to want help with why you arent losing, so...... *shrug* if you are having issues, is there a reason why you cant adopt a more structured approach based on one of the US aftercare plans?
  16. i have a friend who was just (tentatively) approved for surgery with fibro and another chronic autoimmune disorder. at this point they feel the 150 pounds of excess weight is doing her so much harm, she has nothing to lose by having the surgery. the thing is, you have to find a surgeon who feels comfortable with doing the surgery. start with that. get a consult with the doc. go over your history and lab tests. discuss possible outcomes. my friend went right to the chief of surgery at the hospital who also does 80% of the bariatric surgeries there. (seek out a center of excellence). if you feel you have no other options, the excess weight is killing you, you have nothing to lose by having the surgery... AND you can find a good doc who will do the surgery, then you'll have to decide for yourself. (PS i highly recommend a paleo autoimmune diet. it works wonders for many people with autoimmune diseases)

    Pain meds after surgery ?

everyone on my sleeve group who used dr A has been very happy with their care. i know one woman was dropped by her doctor after the surgery. so its important to make sure you have someone to follow up with and do blood work, etc after surgery. i had the VSG and was in the hosp 3 days, but i had complications due to excessive scar tissue from my gall bladder surgery 11 years before. i was pretty out of it the first 3-4 days home with lots of nausea for 2 weeks afterwards... but i am not typical. i needed extra healing time due to what my doc found when he opened me up. i needed to return to the hospital for fluids and meds. but you could get that in any hospital if you had the need. talk direct with the people here who have used both docs. i am not so sure what you would get in MX is any less than what you would get in FL. the clinics in MX arent for the average mexican, they are designed and paid for by medical tourists.

    I need so much help!

    Failure!

excuse me, i don't mean to sound like i am giving you a hard time, but you said you were following your discharge diet. how can you be following your diet if you don't know how much protein you are supposed to be getting? every DC diet i have ever looked at has specificed how much protein you need to get daily. it's 60-80 grams a day. and at least 64 ounces of water. you must track your protein to know how much you are getting.

    I need so much help!

i would recommend a paleo autoimmune diet, and a trainer who has experience working with bariatric patients. you may want to read a book called "ultrametabolism." it explains how hard it is to lose weight when your body is having an inflammation crisis. (which it sounds like it is based on your symptoms) feel free to PM me for more info.

still interested in hearing exactly how many grams of Protein and how many ounces of Water you are getting every day.

I'm in the dog house and cant find my way out.

i found this book really helpful. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1250004047/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1572245433&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1CMCG65FZ5XBGX6WXTVR

    Failure!

you need to KNOW how much Protein and Water you are getting each day, so you know you are getting enough. otherwise your metabolism slows way down and hangs on to every ounce. there is a pinned post that has links to post op diets. i would search for that and start following an actual post op diet. and start tracking ASAP. your body needs a certain amount of protein water and exercise to not go into starvation mode and stop losing. this is why you need to track exactly what you are eating, drinking and doing. here is the link to my post op diets. you should read through them and maybe this can help you with whatever you are missing. good luck. http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/highland/departments-centers/bariatrics/bariatric-diets.aspx
