Please explain pre-op diet
moonlitestarbrite replied to txags's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
since you are the one having surgery, you need to follow your doctors orders and not worry about what other people think. its none of their business anyway. dont let what you think others might be thinking (but probably arent) stand in the way of you being compliant with your pre op diet. -
Desperate: any ppl 5 years out?!
moonlitestarbrite replied to Kateness777's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i recommend that you tell your mom that since there really isnt any way you can know what information she is looking for, it would be better for her to do the research about her own concerns. you arent going to be able to move her past her fears... you can only deal with your own fears. for your own safety, you should make sure *you* know what the long term success and failure rates are for your surgery center. if they dont keep stats long term, look for another care provider. you dont want to go anywhere they dont do long term follow up. the highest success rates are among those who have good preparation for surgery... meaning practice with eating and tracking a high Protein diet, psych eval, with counseling as recommended by the psych, and time to create a regular exercise program. if you follow your diet post post op, exercise regularly and deal with your emotional eating issues, you stand a very good chance of being successful in the long term. if you go into the surgery with little insight about why you eat the way you do, little practice eating a healthy high protein diet and continue eating junk food, no regular exercise program, and no plan for dealing with your emotional issues, you will likely regain eventually. and really honestly, if you any unhealed trauma in your life, you need to get professional help for healing before surgery. my personal experience is, people with unhealed trauma really struggle with moving beyond emotional eating. -

suggestions for gummy Multi Vitamin with lots of Iron?
moonlitestarbrite replied to Patoonces's topic in Food and Nutrition
gummies arent very good Vitamins. they dont usually have a lot of anything in them. i don't think they usually put Iron in them either. liquid multies are a much better choice. i love the one i use and my blood work is always good. (though i do take an additional Vitamin D supplement cause i live in the cold dark north) http://www.vitacost.com/tropical-oasis-tropical-plus-mega-multiple-vitamn-mineral -

i just want to say that people who are doing well have most likely moved on from online forums. unless you are struggling, there isnt a whole lot to keep you here more than 5 years. -
how does one become psychologically ready?
moonlitestarbrite replied to marymary1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
exploring how to soothe yourself without food. learning relaxation and stress management techniques. changing your internal dialogue regarding you and your relationship with food. i didnt do much of this before surgery, but got a crash course after surgery. its better to start the process before surgery i think. -
Please explain pre-op diet
moonlitestarbrite replied to txags's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i had no pre op diet. one day before surgery, i was allowed fluids only. after 12am, nothing by mouth. that was it. it all depends on your doc, your BMI, your blood work. and you can do an "all natural" liquid diet. jello is always optional. -
I need to be free from my cpap
moonlitestarbrite replied to Diva2Be's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
guessing your H would prefer you use a cpap than walking up next to a dead wife. that tends to be a total turn off, yk? (jk, but you get my point) -
i have two picky kids and a picky husband that also has a wheat and corn (and god knows what else) allergy. (try cooking a meal everyone will and can eat... i dare you! i have exactly two recipes that fit the bill) i homeschool my kids (which means i am home with them all day every day with almost no breaks). i plan my food separately than their food most of the time. i eat baked oatmeal in the morning, have hard boiled eggs, yogurt, veggies and hummus and almonds for Snacks, left overs for lunch and Protein and veggies for dinner... usually meatballs, sausage or chicken. very simple. easy to plan. plan all your food choices out in advance. i go to yoga 2-3 times a week. swim once a week with my kids, walk once with a friend and go to a dance class with another friend. i plan ahead when this will happen. if you do not put your needs first, no one will do it for you. i had this surgery for myself. because 10 years of putting my husband and kids first left me fat, sick and miserable. no one is going to rescue me, fix me, make me fit, make me happy or put me first. its all on me! plan your meals, learn to cook, get yourself to the gym or just go outside and run around with your kids. make yourself a priority. learn to put yourself first. you only get this one chance, dont waste it waiting for something magical to happen. it already did. you get a second chance at life, but only if you take care of it.

I need to be free from my cpap
moonlitestarbrite replied to Diva2Be's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
a friend who is in the pipeline to have wls this summer will likely need to continue using her bipap. she not only has obstructive sleep apnea, but central sleep apnea too. she is not too upset, she loves that she is able to actually sleep when she uses it. why do you need to get rid of yours? i purely hated mine but learned after about 5 months to live with it. what is your BMI? your throat will get less "fat" and even extreme apnea will get better, but i dont think there is anyway to know who will and wont need if after losing weight. -
Success after 5 years?
moonlitestarbrite replied to kimpatcan's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
my hospital (a center of excellence in bariatric surgery) claims that 80% of its patients keep off at least 80% of their excess weight for 3 years. i dont know if they track longer than that. they say 20% fail, mostly because of dietary non compliance. -
I am scared
moonlitestarbrite replied to TatorTot's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
what i really miss is being able to numb myself out with food. but i am learning to cope with life without food. i have good days and not so good days. its a learning process, but i do feel like i had a serious head start not just because of previous therapy, but already eating a whole foods diet. i highly recommend therapy and learning various ways of relaxing and managing stress without drugs. a huge dose of vigorous self honesty is really helpful too. -
Lesson learned, starting over
moonlitestarbrite replied to Schwinngirl1987's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
a friend of mine just started attending a treatment group for eating disorders. maybe you can find something like that where you live. i know 12 step programs dont have much of a track record with food addiction, so maybe start with therapist who start specializes in ED? -
emotional eating.....wtf
moonlitestarbrite replied to readyanxiousscared's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
this is an awesome place to start. it's only natural that deciding to have the surgery will be stressful. and you will cope with the stress in the only way you know, by eating. but you have to start to find alternative ways to soothe yourself without food. since once you have the surgery, you wont have a choice. http://www.bariatricpal.com/page/articles.html/_/support/escaping-the-trap-of-emotional-eating-r179 for more ideas.. google.... "managing anxiety without drugs." lots and lots of ideas out there. -
if you arent able to control the negative thoughts in your head, you may want to consult a therapist. therapists are good at helping people deal with issues like this.

moonlitestarbrite replied to kelbelle29's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
if you are truly hungry, eat. are you getting 70 grams of protein and 64 ounces of water? snacking on things with fiber is really the way you want to go... raw veggies and hummus, apples, almonds. you will want to add exercise because that way you will be ramping up your metabolism. esp weight lifting. muscle burns more at rest than fat. -

Iron Deficiency
moonlitestarbrite replied to ges12877's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
are you taking B12? have you had your B12 level tested? you cannot use the Iron from food or supplements without adequate B12 levels. PPI meds (like prilosec and nexium) prevent the uptake of B12 in the stomach, so if you are on these meds, you need to take sublingual or injected B12. i know a lot about this type of anemia. may i can help.
