my plan allows it, but i dont understand why... cereal is high in carbs and low in nutrients, and is a trigger for for many people. at 10 months po i can eat 1/4 cup of my homemade high Protein granola and a little milk.. but it sure fills me up fast! i would stay away from it until you feel like you really have a handle on your diet and trigger foods. (6 months or more)

Emotional eating
moonlitestarbrite replied to OriginalfitRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
start googling, "dealing with stress drug free" "healing anxiety without drugs" "overcoming emotional eating." start reading about how you can cope without eating, you will have a better idea of where to start... too many people say, "i need to stop emotionally eating" without having any plan of what to do instead. you may want to start seeing a therapist too. a book that i found very helpful was "instinct to heal." the first step to overcoming emotional eating is becoming aware of it, so its good to keep a food journal, (just for yourself, so you can be totally honest) and note how you are feeling before you eat anything. once you start to understand what kinds of thoughts and feelings you have before you overeat, you can start to change it. btw, in the magazine forum, there is an article called "escaping the trap of emotional eating." its a really good article... i cant link to it cause i am on my ipad! -
What are your thoughts regarding Bananas?
moonlitestarbrite replied to Butterflyhigh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
why i feel like a crazy person on low carbs: carbs help regulate hormone balance in the body and are required for good neurological functioning. carbs are not bad, how most americans eat them are. -
Comfort zones, true weight plateaus
moonlitestarbrite replied to NurseGrace's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
i have various friends who are vegan. one is rail thin. he eats like 100 grams of protein a day. he eats tempe for breakfast, beans for lunch, tofu for dinner. lots of veggies and always has water in his hand. the other is obese. she eats tons of carbs, all kinds of processed junk including pop and chips. she s a vegan for ethical reasons, not health reasons... so being vegan isnt ness healthy or even full of veggies... i dont know how you eat, but its certainly possible to get your 60-70 grams of protein being vegan.. and to avoid processed carbs. you can totally lose the rest of you weight, you need to look a what you are eating and to get back on the exercise bandwagon... find some sort of movement you love and do it! -
Anyone From Buffalo, Ny Out There?
moonlitestarbrite replied to chilihot59's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
rochester, NY here. -
i teach cooking classes. i also do private cooking lessons. i also teach people to menu plan and shop healthy. some people just need to learn the skills. some people lack the executive functioning skills needed to feel confidant in the kitchen. my suggestion is to honestly ask yourself what you feel willing to do to learn to cook for yourself. maybe you just need to get a cookbook for kids and teach yourself to cook. maybe you need a kitchen makeover. maybe you need lessons. maybe you need a lot of handholding. maybe you need to find someone to cook for you. sometimes i do personal cheffing for people. i prefer to teach people to cook for themselves, but sometimes people just arent willing or ready to take that on. you need to be honest with yourself about what you need.

Reactive Hypoglycemia After Bariatric Surgery
moonlitestarbrite replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
there are different kinds of hypoglycemia. the only way to know what kind you have is to get a monitor and start checking your BGL and see how food and eating and not eating is affecting you. you might just need to adjust how and when you are eating, you may have reactive hypoglycemia, or something else. the only way to know is to track and get info. -
Reactive Hypoglycemia After Bariatric Surgery
moonlitestarbrite replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
you have to ask your doctor to write a script for a monitor so you can start checking your BGL. usually the pharmacy has coupons that make the monitor free and insurance covers the strips. if you start checking your BGL several times a day (first thing in the morning, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours after a meal and before bed) you will get an idea of how food affects you and if eating before bed helps how you feel in the morning. i had this issue when pregnant, my GBL was really low in the morning and i would fall over while doing yoga... i learned i needed to eat more carbs than i thought in order to get my level up to normal. this is not reactive hypoglycemia, its different. the only way for you to know what is actually happening with you is to check with a monitor for a few weeks. good luck! -
i love to hike! my only tip is, make sure you bring plenty of water and some snacks.

Visit with psychologist.

i used to be a chemical dependency counselor. we would get referrals from the court for DWIs... people who had been evaluated by psychs already. i swear, it seemed some of these people did evals cause they sucked as therapists and counselors! they charged lots of money, had mandated clients and were just so sucky. there was nothing we could do about them though, even though they were terrible! someone who is in my local support group said her evaluator was horrible and she complained to the hospital (was specific about things he said) and he's not on the referral list anymore. i am actually so embarrassed by bad counselors... -
well that is crap. he needs to see a bariatric doctor.

Reactive Hypoglycemia After Bariatric Surgery
moonlitestarbrite replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
what is your blood glucose level in the morning? you need to know this and then how to bring it up to normal level before starting exercising. how you treat it will depend on how low it is in the morning. -

Do you miss anything about being Fat? (You're Old Body)
moonlitestarbrite replied to HalloweenBaby24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i love that article, because it is so honest. but i dont relate to any of it personally. there is not a single thing i miss about being fat. i was not one of those beautiful curvy fat women. i am short, with a small frame and so being fat just made me look like a troll. and more importantly, it made me feel horrible, sick and tired all the time. i dont think that is a typical reaction to losing half your body weight, though i do think some people can relate to one or two things on the list. -

so hope you can be done with all this s**t very soon! -
i have not heard this. i have heard that for most people, losing weight reduces the number and severity of flare ups. i think bypass can make certain autoimmune disorders worse because it affects the GI tract, where the immune system "resides." i have a friend with fibro and scleroderma and her doc has strongly recommended the sleeve over bypass, but the surgeon hasn't decided yet (based on his research) which procedure he thinks she should have.

What are your thoughts regarding Bananas?
moonlitestarbrite replied to Butterflyhigh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL!! a friend of mine is in the pipeline for surgery. one of her biggest problems is, she doesn't eat all, and then she goes home from work and is SO HUNGRY she eats 3 times as much food as she would if she ate actual meals. or she goes across the hall from her office to the cafe and gets a huge chocolate chip cookie and some 600 calorie coffee as a "meal." even when she brings good food to work, she will "forget" to eat. it's something she NEEDS to find a solution for pre op, so she doesn't continue this pattern post op. one of the things we came up with is for her to keep a "boulder bar" in her purse when she is wanting to stop for a huge sweet coffee when she hasn't eaten. it's not a perfect solution, but it's working right now.. it's 270 calories, 16 grams of sugar, 23 grams of Protein. her nut hasn't has many suggestions about making sure she eats at work. other than "you need to eat lunch." uh, yup. thanks. when she saw the boulder bar on her food journal, she said "oh, dont eat those, they are bad for you." when my friend said, "i know it's not real food, but it seems better than me stopping at starbucks. it seems a step in the right direction." she replied, "you shouldn't eat those." uhhhhhhhh... meaning, there is nothing wrong with getting input from others when you are attempting to problem solve. but if you look for support in making risky or poor food choices.... well, you will find it, but it probably isnt the best idea if you want to be successful. -

yup! after seeing the completely blank face my nut gave me when i asked her about healthy fats post op.. coconut oil? avocados? grass fed butter? HUH??? i stopped asking questions, did lots of head nodding and smiling and saying "uh huh." dont fight with her over a banana. it's not worth it.
