    Fat Acceptance, your thoughts.

i think the original point was its not okay to treat someone like a piece of garbage based on being overweight. you would not treat a smoker like they didnt have a right to live just because they were still smoking would you? but its not just about being fat, its appearance.. there are a lot of angry, hateful people out there. did you hear about the 3 year old who was asked to leave KFC because the scars on her face from being mauled by 3 pit bulls were "scaring" the customers? as a species, we have a lot of growing to do. ????

it interests me greatly to see the responses on this thread versus the messages on the thread about how do you talk to someone you love about being fat. human beings are so fascinating!

Wil I have normal life after sleeve?

i just want to say, my surgeon believes the stomach of an obese person doesn't function correctly. he believes it makes to much grhelin and not enough leptin. maybe this is just his way of justifying the surgery he does, but he doesnt seem to be that kind to guy to me. your full feeling is different because your stomach only takes up a fraction of the space inside your body that it used to. you will never have that "totally stuffed" feeling again. you will need to find other ways of coping with life rather than stuffing yourself. i do not in the least bit feel handicapped by not eating certain foods. sometimes i miss stuffing myself with Pasta or rice, but its not really the food i miss, its the stuffing myself. and the farther i get from surgery... the less i miss it. its not a handicap... its very freeing! i can now CHOOSE to eat something or not. its my choice. i dont feel compelled anymore to eat and eat and eat. i can drink 8 ounces of liquid if my stomach is empty. but this didnt happen until i was 5 months post op. is this typical? no idea. i'm not sure what you mean by normal.... i have the same life i had pre op, except i spend way less time eating and thinking about food and more time moving around and exercising. i walk way more (i live in the city), have more energy and do yoga (did that pre op), dance, weight lift, swim, and hike. i dont eat out much, but didnt pre op. my H is gluten free and we didnt eat fast food or junk foods before anyway. one other thing that changed for me... i used to watch the food network all the time. i broke up with the food network. i have been reading more, less TV.... and when i watch... not food TV... is my life normal? i guess. is it the same as it used to be. nope. and that is just fine with me. my quality of life is much improved over what it what. thats why i had this surgery! do you not think that losing weight is going to IMPROVE your quality of life? what is it you really want? to get healthy or keeping eating like you have been? you should decide now, this surgery isnt reversible!

    Fat Acceptance, your thoughts.

the fat acceptance movement seems to have changed a lot in the 15 years since i first read stuff about it. i am appalled, disgusted and revolted by the way people think they can treat obese people. i have worked with obese people who have PTSD from the way they have been treated. its horrendous. i dont understand where the venom and rage comes from. why some people feel that being fat makes one not human anymore. it not only confuses me, it makes me really really sad. i hate it and feel that its part of a larger problem of an non-compassionate and angry culture we live in. but what i see now is not people talking about people treating obese people with common respect, compassion and kindness, but people who seem to believe that its better to be fat than healthy. because "thats who i am." and losing weight equals fat phobia. this seems a bizarre projection to me. not loving or caring for myself is how i got fat. loving myself was WHY i got this surgery... i dont care for myself now BECAUSE i lost 85 pounds. i lost weight because i cared enough to do something drastic to get healthy. i love my children, i love being their mommy. i dont want to drop dead when my kids are teens like my dad did. a lot of what i see people posting on blogs and FB seem to be excuses for not getting healthy and taking care of themselves. i have an obese friend who posts all kinds of stuff on FB, and she doesnt seem to have a clue how she is coming across... bitter, blaming and a huge victim. that is NOT what the original fat acceptance movement was all about. now it just seems like fat people encouraging each other to stay fat, sick and unhealthy. its the flip side of those sites where people encourage each other in exercise addiction/bulimia/anorexia. really disturbing. imagine places online where people encouraged each other to shoot dope or drink addictively or gamble compulsively. somehow if its food, its different. (no, its not)
  7. EXERCISE!! exercise is the only way you can speed up your metabolism.

    Fibromyalgia and stalls

if you read the book "ultrametabolism" he explains why its so hard to lose weight when you are having an inflammation crisis. check it out. you may also want to look into the autoimmune paleo diet or even the whole30 diet. both of these food plans can greatly reduce inflammation in your body. good luck!

    Gallbladder

sleeve surgery 11 months ago. no more running to the bathroom. (in all fairness, it only happened in the morning the last 7 years or so). i have struggled with constipation. as long as i take my konjac root (a fiber supplement), eat oatmeal couple times a week, dried fruit, yogurt, stay hydrated i am good. still happens 2-3 times a month usually.

    Gallbladder

for 10 years. it was like having IBS.
  11. she never posted my comment. and it was really mild. though i dont know that i would have mentioned sharon posting on other websites... that seems like throwing gasoline on the fire that might redouble her efforts to reel sharon in again. i hope not, she seems like someone who would like getting revenge too much. if you want to know what her real issue is, you can read the recent posts by myself, roo and greensleeves.

    Gallbladder

i talked with my surgeon about this before surgery and he was like...."nope, usually its constipation that people have trouble with." boy was he right! though my surgery was 10 years before my sleeve surgery. however, your BMs when you are on the liquid diet are not likely to be normal. like everyone else.

    Low carb diet compliance

aint that the truth! i can be hypoglycemic too. it was the worst when i was pregnant. but i also had lots of problems when i was fat. i tried to do the 4 hour body diet (recommended by my doc). i was a hot mess. the doc gave me a script for a glucometer and we figured out i was teetering on too low blood sugar with almost no carbs. but it seems the less i weigh, the less this is an issue. it can be really hard to listen to our body (for lots of reasons), but its really required after this surgery... the changes we go through are so huge. (what this translates to is, dont decide before surgery what you will be able to do... you have no idea what your post op, not fat anymore body will be like!)

    Low carb diet compliance

some people do very well on ketogenic diets... i feel high. like i am on drugs and not in a good way. i hated it after surgery.
  17. moonlitestarbrite

    Low carb diet compliance

i have experienced the same. my long term experience after the surgery is that i can do 100 - 130 grams per day and be okay. which is wayyyyy less than what i was eating before. i think the type of carb matters and what else you are eating it with. the less i weigh, the less i seem to need carbs for good brain function. but everyone is different.
  18. moonlitestarbrite

    Low carb diet compliance

i totally focus on complex carbs that also give me nutrients i need, like protein and fiber... so beans, oatmeal, quinoa, sweet potatoes, dried fruit in small amounts. milk also has carbs. not only do carbs like pasta, bread and rice make me uncomfortable and sometimes queasy, the dont give me a whole lot nutrient wise. however, you need a see how your body does, some people stall around9 months and discover by tracking that going below 40 grams of carbs they start loosing again. it moght be that these people are insulin resistant. something that doesnt magically go away with surgery.

First BIG emotional trigger since surgery!

lots of deep breathing, long walks, exercise, talk with a trusted friend, listen to music.
  23. i have some idea. i raised his child from the age of 3 until she was 13. 7 of those years was full time. when i finally got heathy enough to leave him he took his daughter away and i never saw her again. that was 15 years ago. i recently reconnected with her on facebook but still have not met up with her in person, she is still too wary cause her father is still a big part of her life and has filled her head with lies about what really happened and what kind of person i am. but no, i didnt have my own child with him, that would have been even more devastating if i had to deal with him for the last 15 years. at least he's been gone from my life, even if he did take my stepdaughter too.

What is the real point of this surgery?

cowgirljane, new research supports this, that being fat leads to overeating... a hormone given off by fat cells themselves. one of the things i experienced was exercise made me ravenous. this really sabotaged my weight loss efforts. i would work and work at losing weight and actually gain a pound! it was infuriating!
