New - doctor recommeded I join
DonRodolfo replied to Brighteyes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'd only have to feel guilty if you weren't doing anything about the weight you've gained. You're about to undertake something huge, and despite what some of our families, friends, and coworkers may tell us, it certainly isn't the easy way out. Congrats on your decision! -
Try some of the Syntrax flavors from Vitamin Shoppe or online at http://bjsbariatrics.com/product/synSamplePack.html

Weight gain in hospital
DonRodolfo replied to Brownrek's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same here, don't sweat it. It'll come off (and probably take some more with it ) in a few days. -
This is why I use nasal pillows instead of a full face mask or nose cup. The leaks are minimal and easy to resolve. I highly recommend trying them if you haven't already.

Ditto here Fiddle, but happy to bump the thread for you!

Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Isolate
DonRodolfo replied to buckeyefan1985's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I got the strawberry banana flavor in a tub and just threw the rest away yesterday. It tasted okay at first but I got tired of it quickly. Even with milk I didn't like it. -

I have a scale with a 1000lb capacity. Do yourself a favor after surgery and weigh yourself once per week. Pick a day that works for you and weigh only on that day. If you start weighing yourself like certain psychos around here (yes myself included) you're just setting yourself up for heartbreak. Also, start measuring yourself - this will help for those times the scale isn't moving.

I forgot about Agave - I like it as well!

I prefer Ideal and, to me, tastes just like sugar. Unfortunately, restaurants don't carry it and it's not always easy to find so I end up mixing Sweet and Low and Equal. I *HATE* Splenda and Stevia has a funky aftertaste.

Protein bars- helpful or harmful?
DonRodolfo replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes but painkillers helped! It also went away on its own in a few days. -
Protein bars- helpful or harmful?
DonRodolfo replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cinnamon Roll - 24g (17g fiber) Apple Pie - 24g (18g fiber) strawberry Cheesecake - 25g (17g fiber) (There are several other flavors, these are the ones I bought today) As I understand it, if you subtract the Fiber from the carbs you end up with net carbs which in each of these cases is pretty acceptable. If the concept of net carbs is hooey, then yeah the carbs are ridiculous! -
I was released from the hospital on full fluids which included Soups that you could blend up, strain out the chunks, and eat the rest.

Protein bars- helpful or harmful?
DonRodolfo replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeons say at some point we're supposed to wean off of Protein shakes (and I guess protein bars as well) and get our protein primarily from food. Both seem like very efficient and convenient ways to get protein, I have to wonder are they really that bad? -
Protein bars- helpful or harmful?
DonRodolfo replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every time I looked at protein bars I wasn't impressed - something on the nutrition label turned me off, usually too high sugar. I actually bought one once and hated it, very sticky and gummy on my teeth. And then I discovered Quest bars. I've only tried the Peanut Butter so far but bought three other kinds just a few hours ago. I really like them and they're not too sweet. I highly recommend trying these if you haven't already. -
Understood - gyms have a wide variety of cardio machines you can use. My advice above would be fine for all. Also might want to consider swimming or just walking laps in the pool.

I forgot to tell you something. I've been a member of 3 different gyms since 2005 and not one single time did anyone harass me, ridicule me, or ever say anything negative. What I have gotten several times is people saying things like "you're doing a great job" and "keep up the good work". Don't worry about looking like a fool - we look way sillier with a box of donuts on our laps complaining about our weight than we do at the gym doing something about it!

Get on a treadmill, set it to a comfortable speed, and walk for 10 minutes. You're not aiming for a particular heartrate or sweating or anything else at this point. When you're finished go home. Pat yourself on the back for accomplishing this. Do this again tomorrow, and they day after, and everyday. In 30 days define your next goal (faster speed, more time, both, different machine, etc.) It doesn't have to be any more complicated than this at this point.

My new favorite food for pureed/soft foods is...
DonRodolfo replied to LipstickLady's topic in Soft (stage 3)
This one right here: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/80463-recipe-and-pic-mini-crustless-quiche/page__hl__quiche I loved it with the prosciutto, but you could probably do ham as well. I could only eat half at a time, and it's even good right out of the fridge. -
My surgeon considered milk a full liquid, so you could have had it weeks ago. (skim or no fat, tho)

I hate my pre op diet!
DonRodolfo replied to softballmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Perhaps this will help: The pre-op diet is NOT a punishment ... it's an opportunity. Personally, if I had to do it all over again I'd demand to do the 2 week preop diet as well. Why? Yes, the first four days were horrible - I asked the same question you did above and I seem to remember wanting to sue someone! On top of everything you're dealing with, I had allergy symptoms that would not go away. But I woke up on day 5 and the world didn't suck. I didn't feel miserable, the headaches were gone, and I didn't feel like I was going to die of starvation. What I didn't realize until later is that this prepared me for life after surgery. Yes there people who get to eat what they want until the last minute. Imagine them dealing with recovery AND what you're dealing with right now. I wouldn't trade places with them.
