I was all in one and had a textbook recovery. No complications, little pain and now no heartburn since having my prolapsed band removed.

Unflavored Protein Powder
ribearty replied to ambitious1star's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Whatever you are mixing the Protein into has to be under 140 degrees or it willl clump. I recommend purchasing a thermometer so you know the temperature of the soup or oatmeal, -
Sophiepants, Thank for the luck I will need it. I will be posting more next week after my class is over.

what vitamins do you take?
ribearty replied to SoCalMomOfFour's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I take Celebrate multi-complete chewable Forest berry flavor. I take one in the morning and one in the evening. They taste good. My nutritionist does not want us taking gummy Vitamins and said that the bariatric vitamins are better for you especially in the beginning. I also take a sublingual B-12, and an Iron supplement Ferrous Fumarate and B-1 along with a Biotin capsule. I do not take calcium citrate supplements due to a history of kidney stones. I am having my lab work done next week before I see my surgeon for my 3 month post-op visit. -
I have been doing my crunches just not replying. I am taking off tomorrow and Saturday from them. I have a final exam on Sunday and that is where most of my attention has been focused.

Well here goes nothin!

Good luck Amanda. See you on the loser's bench. -
That was my biggest fear also because they don't know until you're on the operating room table. My doctor told me he was successful in 90% of his surgeries at performing both surgeries in the same procedure. I was glad I fell into the 90%. If he hadn't been able to do both at the same time, my sleeve surgery would have been 12 weeks later.

4 Things I Wish I Would've Known Pre Op
ribearty replied to Tink22-sleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Take measurements prior to surgery because they can be a benchmark measure when the scale is not moving. Take pictures of yourself prior to surgery. Get a front shot and a side shot also. I did not enjoy looking at the pictures, but look at them along side pictures you take six weeks out and you'll be amazed at the difference. -
I had two reasons for choosing the sleeve. I did not want to have any of my intestines rerouted and wanted to avoid malabsorption issues. Do you have a lapband in place now? Did your doctor give you any reasons for why he thought the bypass would be a better option for you?

Congratualtons and good luck on your upcoming surgery. Do you still have your band in, or has it previously been removed? I had my band removed and the sleeve performed in one procedure.

The answer to this question varies by doctor and situations. Seems so similar to the different pre and post-op diets and when you get certain types of food.

January 2014 Sleevers Come In!
ribearty replied to HipsAndLipstick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi January sleevers, two things I recommend to you is take measurements before your surgery so you have a benchmark of where you started. These can be so helpful down the road when the scale isn't moving but you're losing inches so progress is still occurring. If you have already had surgery, it's still not too late. Take them when you're feeling up to it. My other recommendation is take pictures of yourself also, a front shot and side shot. I know I hated looking at these pictures, but when I look at how I look now, it is amazing to see the difference. Good luck to all of you with your upcoming surgeries. To those traveling in snow and ice, safe travels to the hospital and upon returning home. -
I stayed two because I was a revision patient. A friend of mine with the same doctor had the sleeve also and was a first time weight loss surgery patient spent one. It depends on your doctor and how you feel the next day after surgery. Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

Being the geek I am, I added up all the pounds lost in this thread to date, and it totals 3,137.5. Thank goodness for Excel. We are all losers!!!

Can't exercise, can you still succeed?
ribearty replied to Scorpion11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had back surgery and afterwards walking was my primary source of exercise since it was February. Swimming helped with the pain because the Water took the pressure off the back. I have problems now with my hip so I ride my bicycle a lot and that doesn't cause pain. Try to find an activity you can tolerate. -
Staying hydrated doing outdoor winter activities
ribearty replied to SeaGirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have used my camelback since my sleeve surgery without any problem when I ride my bicycle. I didn't even think about it being a "straw" I am just so used to taking it with me when I ride. Mindless drinking instead of eating. How do you do with cold drinks? If you are skiing the Water may get cold, and if cold drinks cause you problems, you might encounter some pain. If you plan to use your Camelback, you might try to drink a small amount using a straw to see if that causes you any pain. If that is okay, test your Camelback at home to see how it feels before taking it out with you untried on an outdoor excursion. It would totally stink to end up ruining your ski trip. -
Lancaster Ohio? FMC patients?
ribearty replied to *Misty*Raine*'s topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Misty, here is the url for your doctor. Looks like 10 members here have used him. You might reach out to them for their opinions. http://www.bariatricpal.com/surgeons/1035-timothy-custer/ -
Have you ever been chastised by another doctor for having weight loss surgery?
ribearty replied to ribearty's topic in Rants & Raves
NSAID and ulcers are the reason. I believe when I had my band they didn't want you on NSAIDs either. The best thing to do is check with your doctor. Carolina and/or Jim will most likely know what their docs think on this. They both have bands and I do not any more. -
In our area Red Lobster has a parmesan encrusted talapia. Might be available nationwide. We both were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I split it with my husband. When we went there the first time after surgery, I was on soft foods. Glad you found something that worked with your diet.

Juliennp Welcome to BariatricPal, It sounds to me like you might be suffering from dehydration. It is easy to do at the early stages. Make sure you get your fluids in. Try a different Protein shake or add sugar flavor syrups to them to help. It's hard but so important. I drank Premier ready to drink shakes because they didn't have a funky protein after taste. Good luck.

I think I had to wait six weeks before using the pool or hot tub. I would be very hesitant doing it before cleared. Since it's early January, I hope for Colorado's winter tourism industry, you have more snow and will be able to do so later without presenting a risk to yourself.

You will start feeling more restriction when you start eating foods with more substance. I could drink a Protein drink in half an hour. Sip and keep up your fluids throughout the day. I wouldn't feel guilty. You're doing what you should be doing.

Anyone Else Cold All The Time?
ribearty replied to TonyaMac's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wore the thermals I bought link in post #32 today when I went outside to shovel snow. They kept me warm. It was 11 but felt like -8 with wind chill.
