  1. Help..... I just went to see my nutritionist today. I am three months out and have lost 40 of the 100 lbs I need to lose. She basically told me that I should be eating mostly protein shakes and very little real food. Only one half a cup of food per meal, with three quarters of that half cup being meat the other part veggies. She told me to avoid all starch products no bread ect. She also said that my diet should only be about 500-600 Cal a day, and I should be losing 3-5 lbs a week. I am interested in the diet advice other people have gotten from their doctors and nutritionists. I feel like keeping yourself in starvation mode for a longer period of time will lead to more muscle loss and ultimatly slowing your metabilism down making it harder long term to keep a normal weight. Isn't it still true that slower wieight loss is better than sudden weight loss??? Help me out here people.. let me know what your support people told you. P.S. I have a call in to get a referral to see and new Nutririonist.
  2. I have been told that you should have about 1 gram per kilo of body weight. (a kilo is 2.2 pounds). so if you weigh 220 pounds you are at 100 kilos. Some doctors use what your Ideal weight should be but I found taht is not everybody opinion. Most men need at least 100 grams. You should spread out your intake throughout the day so you don't overload your kidneys and you will absorb it better. Try to have something every three hours Whey and meat protein are the best.

    Who goes to Curves post-op?

I joined Curves about a month ago. I was about 7 weeks post op. I work full time and my husband is out of town for work all week long so the only time I have without the kids is at lunch time. I pop over there at my lunch breaks and it only takes me about 45 minutes for dressing stretching and driving along with the workout. I love it. I am not ready to go hang out with the skinny girls and body builders and wait for the machines and try to 'Wing it'. Curves always has a girl there to help you on the machines so you get a good workout and don't injure yourself. My nutritionist told me that Curves was perfect for WLS because it works all of the muscle groups and that will tell your body..."HEY I STILL NEED THOSE MUSCLES SO DON'T USE THEM FOR ENERGY". "GO PICK ON FAT, WE'RE NOT USING THAT" Go for it!!! you won't be sorry.
  5. Try starting your day with a cup of strong ginger tea. I swear by it for the first month . I helps decrease infalmation in the GI tract. Every time I tried to go with out it I would have trouble drinking water until I drank my cup of tea and an hour later I was golden. I use Yumi tea, but any high end ginger tea will do as long as there is a lot of ginger in it. I really don't like the taste of the tea but it was worth it:)
  6. I am six weeks out from surgery and have lost a total of 32 pounds including 12 pounds pre-op. I seen to have stalled down to about a pound or two a week??? I started at a BMI of 40 and have about 100 pounds to lose total. Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

    Soooo much regret

I know how you feel. I felt anxiety really bad here and there the first week like little stabbings of" HOLY S**T what did I do." The water thing got so much easier when I discovered Ginger Tea. Ginger helps reduce swelling I swear by it . As soon as I started having one cup a day I found it was so much more comfortable to swollow, and I had no trouble getting the water down and protien shakes. I forgot it a few days and really noticed a lot more pain with fluids. and then with in a few hours oif sipping down the tea I could tolerate much more normal swallows. You have to go with the a ginger tea that has a lot of ginger in it. I used Yumi brand but I am sure you can find a good one in a health food store or high quality store like Raleys. Its kind of strong and it doesn't taste the best but its worked like a charm to get through the first four weeks. good luck it won't be like this for long:)
  8. I can eat a small amount of chocolate . Like two pieces of Dove Dark. Without any problems, only now one or two pieces satifies the craving.

    Sueing!

holy crap!!!!!! I would be livid. get a good lawyer. Did you have any suspecions. I am sorry I am sure you feel very violated. I know what it feels like to feel like a peice of meat and a paycheck. I hope at least they did a good job with the surgey that they did do and you don't have any complications. Did the CT look normal for a Rue-en-Y ?

    That hurt...

I am sorry but anyone that thinks the surgery is the easy way out hasn't had it, or even done the research about it. Those of us who went the surgery way did so because we were brave enough to make a permenant change in our lives. I think WW is the safe way out because you can always quit and return to the way things were. Which is what most people end up doing. Good for you for making the decision to change your life for the better. Hopefully your friend will grow up and support your decision.
  11. Sorry it has taken so long to answer the questions. I did get mine at a health food store but any high quality store like raleys or bel air should have the Yogi tea or even some other brand like Mighty Leaf or Yumi. I have tried some other blends of ginger but the didn;t have as much ginger in them and didn't help as much. You could always use two or three bags at once though. I found the room temp. tea (all fluids for that matter) go down much easier than hot or even cold.
  12. I have a DVT, a large one I just got back out of the hospital from a 5 day stay. I am still hurting A LOT does any one have experiance with this? What the recovery time is? I am so depressed I can only take short walks around the house and can not stand for any amount of time before My leg is screaming in pain.
  13. Try ginger tea. I was my life saver. It helps to decrease the swelling inside of the stomach. I swear by it I used it the first few days and had no trouble getting protien and fluids down. then one day I forgot it and I started to get very uncomfortable with swallowing agian and couldn't get much in at a time. I drank a cup of ginger tea and all was back to normal again I could drink up to two cups an hour easliy. I swear by it!!!!!!!I was using a ginger tea by Yogi. but as long as it has ginger as the main ingrediant I think you'll be okay. try your local helth food store.
  14. I think you are right about the gas pain. My whole chest hurt then occasionally one shoulder.I am five day out and that has strated to subside. the pain is worse if I take to big of a sip or to close together. I have found sitting up striaght and taking a deep bath helps get past the pain. Tha other thing is make sure you are taking your PPI. I had heart burn this morning than I remembered I was due for the PPI. one hour later I was okay again. good luck. each day will be better.

    Ibuprofen Alternatives?

there is a product that is prescription only its called volterin gel(SP?) it is a powerful NSAID that you apply to the area that hurts. It may help But you should ask you surgen if it is still safe to use it. I have used it for knee pain with success
  17. buccoki

Kick me in the butt please...

You have had a long journey. I don't blame you for not wanting to exercise with knee pain. Have you ever heard of volterin gel? It is a anti inflamitory that you apply to the skin and it helps quit a bit with knee pain(at least mine) I would think that a topical NSAID would not be to bad. I know you probably have heard this but some form of exercise does help to get the metabolism moving agian and will help with the "I'm starving" thing. Maybe some pool activities?? I have also heard that depression is very common with WLS ( I am worried about it post op) you might consider an antidepressant. I hope you can just get to a comfortable place because you deserve it
  18. I have heard of antidepressants being blood thinner. so you should trust your doctor. However if you have an anxiety disorder you might want to ask fo something short term to help with that like zanax. Now's not the time to have a panic attack. I think we all should get pre op zanex to help get through the ten days of liquid food and pre surgery jitters. Hang in there but don't be afraid to ask for what you need

    Gatorade Post-Op?

I am sure they are ok as long as they are sugar free. Gatoraid and such are good for rehydration if you are dehydrated from fluid loss like sweat of diarrhea and vomiting. It helps to replace the electrolytesthat are lost with those general fluid loss. so unless you are having massive diarrhea your electrolytes should be fine you only need to keep up with your water intake. and water is much cheaper:)
  20. I think that anxiety is a natural side effect to the body being starved. your brain is yelling at you to go hunt and gather and find more food because youare metabolizing yourself. It would make sense that you might find weird things that give that zing of anxiety because you are primed for it . I am worried about that after surgery for myself. My plan is to try to move/exercise more that seems to help anxiety

    Rockin' My Sleeve

thanks for the word of encouragement I am so happy to hear you felt that good on the third day. my surgery is in two weeks and I think that the post surgery is the biggest concern for me as far as how long before I can move around and get things done. goodness 34 pounds in 5 days I that normal??? I can't wait
  24. I am right there with you my date is for the 19th I have been doing the "nutrition counseling" for 6 months so I have had to wait FOREVER. Now I am starting to get nervous especially for the liquid diet portion(ten days of hell for a fatty). but I know I can do it. The rest of the feelings I try to stuff. I know this is the right thing for me and I will just have to face the challenges as they come and try not to worry about the what ifs. I had two very challenging pregnancys with LOTS of morning sickness. I figure if I can do that, I will be able to get through the first 6 months of anything. Hang in there, if you know that this is really what you want to do just put your head down and go for it
