I have been reading these related threads the last few days but felt since I wasn't involved in any way I should refrain from commenting. But since I work in a hospital I have seen instances where doctors had inappropriate relationships with patients. Doesn't always mean sex, flirtation is more common but is NOT appropriate behavior for a physician. It isn't usually reported at the time because the patients involved seemed either ashamed right after the fact and wanted to forget it, or they were enthralled with their doctor and the doctor strung them along for a time hoping to avoid disciplinary action. Regardless of consent, doctors are always in a position of power over patients. That is why any hospital or clinic worth their salt takes disciplinary action against doctors who abuse the doctor-patient relationship. Mine certainly does, and they do investigate the incidents carefully. As for the rampant **** shaming that has gone on in these threads - I am appalled and disgusted. You ladies should be ashamed of yourselves. Another member corroborated her story and other patients alleged similar behavior from this doctor. Even if you don't believe her story or you took her retraction as truth, you stooped to the gutter level by outing her and harassing her. This man wasn't fired and I'm betting based on Dr. Garcia's Facebook message that he will be exonerated, rightly or wrongly. So congratulations to those who have a misguided mission of protecting this doctor's unethical behavior. You may think this story is clear-cut and that this is an obvious instance of a woman scorned, but consider this: I was raped in college and beaten in the course of the attack. I did everything I was supposed to -went to the hospital, had painful and invasive tests, filed a police report, had my day in court. From the day my rapist was arrested I was harassed and **** shamed by his girlfriend, his friends, and the university itself. I was threatened with bodily harm and death. I was called a crazy **** who had buyers remorse. My rapist's defense attorney convinced the jury of this too and he was acquitted. I am not saying my story is similar to the story at hand, but what is similar and deeply troubling is the way women gang up on each other rather than support each other. I grow so tired of it.

It's both. You will lose a lot in the beginning because your body goes into a state of ketosis in a low carb diet. This is a good thing. But after a while the weight loss will continue but at a slower pace, as long as you are following the plan and exercising. Don't weigh yourself every day! Daily fluctuations don't tell you how you are really progressing. The best way to weigh yourself is once a week at the exact same time of day, as home scales aren't always accurate. I weigh myself at the gym.

WLS Veterans---Should I Worry, or am I Just Neurotic?
BKLYNgal87 replied to Vixynne's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sensation of liquids moving down your esophagus is due to edema buildup from surgery. Did they give you an incentive spirometer to take home after surgery? If you have one you should practice with it a couple times a day. Deep breathing and time help to clear that up. As for the fever, it's not that high so don't be concerned yet. If it continues for another day or two I would call the doctor's office and let them know. They may want to run blood work. -
Rapid heart rate, fever, fatigue, flank pain, general malaise feeling, etc. - these are some possible symptoms. But as far as I know I don't have a leak, so I can't say from personal experience. What you describe sounds normal to me. However, if you continue to feel unwell I'd call your surgeon's office. Feel better soon!

The heat of summer may not be helping you retain the water you drink. Get as much liquid in as you can but I suggest you incorporate a cup of full sodium chicken broth every day. More salt may help you retain better. Get well soon!

So gorgeous!! Congratulations on all your success! I hope my weight loss journey is as consistent!

So...apparently I have to chew slowly! Who knew? :)

The further out post op, the more you can eat, but you shouldn't be able to eat what you could before. Eating less and eating smarter is for life with VSG. If you're not vigilant even in maintenance phase your weight will creep back up. -
You all look awesome!

Can someone explain why eating and drinking at the same time is forbidden?
BKLYNgal87 replied to jacee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/vsg/4458217/The-Pyloric-Valve-How-it-works-with-the-VSG/ ^ This pretty much covers it. VSG is a life changing procedure and it is ultimately up to you whether it succeeds or not. Some people may get lucky and they don't have to make major changes to their diet (other than eating less) to effectively lose the excess weight but most people must sacrifice a litany of things to be successful. It's important not to dwell on those things you give up, however, and instead focus on all the benefits weight loss and improved health provide. Think of it as a cost/benefit analysis. -
You won't necessarily feel tired or sluggish with dehydration. Everyone is different. Perhaps you are sweating out water more than you realize during the day. Try drinking a soup cup full of full sodium chicken broth once a day. You can improve your water retention that way.

I have about 2 tbsp and eat it with a spoon. Enjoy!

My nutritionist's advice: Eat as few carbs as you can, stomach as much Protein as you can (my goal is 60-80 grams a day). Drink the Protein shakes if you have to. There are ways to make meat or dairy protein more interesting. I am still on purées but made a pot roast, add a tsp of pesto or some salsa to chicken and eat hummus, tofu, greek yogurt, tuna, eggs, etc to break up the monotony. All these foods are high in protein. The more carbs you consume the harder it will be to lose weight over time. You can introduce cooked vegetables and some fruit (beware of the sugar) for variety but you should only be consuming starches and simple carbs in strict moderation.

I feel weak ;( dry mouth, throwing up.
BKLYNgal87 replied to Nelly1828's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The cost of changing your flight will not compare to the physical and mental cost you'll face if you don't go to the closest ER immediately. The risks of waiting until you are back home are NOT worth it. Don't mess around with your life. -
I agree with Mark. Taste is totally subjective. What one person loves another will hate. I used Jay Robb in pre-op because I could buy it in Whole Foods where it was cheaper than GNC. After surgery I couldn't stand the taste so I started using Isopure (I order it off Amazon) which I tolerate fairly well but I'm creative with recipes. If you can get brand samples, I highly advise giving a few a try. But your taste buds may change after surgery or you may just get sick of a flavor or brand so don't stock up too much at once.

Disallowing caffeine, even in moderation is alarmist and unnecessary, IMO. No, caffeine does not cause ulcers. H. pylori bacteria is the primary culprit. However, caffeine stimulates acid secretion (so do SO MANY other things) which can aggravate pre-existing ulcers. It may aggravate the still-healing sleeve, however, so it may be wise to wait a few weeks though I drank iced coffee since 5 days post-op and have had no problems. There is such thing as drinking too much coffee, though. If you're one of those folks who drinks more than 2 cups a day pre-sleeve you may find yourself tormented by increased acid reflux post-sleeve. Doesn't sound fun to me. Moderation is a beautiful thing!

This is how I got my fiance's attention, mind you I met him a few years ago long before my surgery: We saw each other across the room of a restaurant. He looked at me, I looked back at him and saw how handsome and intriguing he looked, and I smiled. He took that as an invitation to come over and talk to me. The rest is history. Just be inviting but also be yourself. The good guys will pick up on the great personality that radiates from you! And as others have said, if there's no connection that's okay, move on until you find a keeper .

What are safe laxatives
BKLYNgal87 replied to miangr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am very sensitive to most laxatives because increased peristalsis (contractions in the GI tract that move waste through) give me miserable cramps that last for hours. If you find yourself not tolerating the laxatives well there's always fiber powder you can buy (like benefiber) and I started eating a couple prunes in water warmed up at the behest of my NUT. I'm on my way to regularity! -

My surgeon cleared me so I hit the gym yesterday, was sleeved 2 weeks ago. I did about 30 minutes of light strength training, mostly upper body (no abs) and 20 minutes on the elliptical. Felt so good to get the endorphins going! -

So far so good at 2 weeks post-op! I'm eating pureed foods, which is way better than the all liquid diet. I also started going back to the gym and I have more energy. I was sleeved at NYP - surgeon Dr. Bessler. He and his team were amazing!

How to handle dehydration
BKLYNgal87 replied to patsybrown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the others. Wait for the IV in the ER, get rehydrated and when you get back home drink 1-2 cups of regular sodium chicken broth every day. You need more sodium so you can hold onto liquid better. Worked for me. Feel better soon!
