Swelling above incision - Post op help!
Shawn Morrison replied to VSGKasey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you think about it, the incision may be small but they had to cut through a lot of stuff to get to that stomach cavity. Skin, fat and muscle. Its a lot of trauma to your body. That muscle cutting is why it hurts when you sit up and things like that. It wil pass. This is very normal and if I'm reading this right you were just sleeved what 3 days ago. Yea ,you will hurt still. Take your pain meds and keep an eye on it. You will be fine. And congrats on getting it done. Good luck! -
Just had my first budweiser in 6 months sipping slowly
Shawn Morrison replied to buddy love's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Very cool man. I was a big craft beer guy before and I miss it. I wasn't a drink to get drunk guy but more of for the awesome variety of flavors that are out there now. I miss that and look forward to having that in some small way again at some point. I'm only 1.5 months in so I will probably wait until I hit my goal but that is only 50 more pounds! -
Silly question really
Shawn Morrison replied to flyme_places's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Being cold was one of my first, OMG I'm losing weight moments. That and my wedding ring was the first thing to not fit. I'm very much looking forward tot his summer and not sweating as much. -
how to measure food?
Shawn Morrison replied to SleeveShelly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use both depending on what the item is and its serving type is. If its meat or some other solid food I use a kitchen scale but if its soups or liquids I use the liquid measuring cups. It makes it easier to compare against recommended servings and track my intake that way. -
Weight gain six weeks out...
Shawn Morrison replied to Hopeful in Rochester's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
" I eat about 500-800 calories a day, the majority of which is protein. I fall short on my fluids - I get around 45 ounces a day" That is the issue right there. If you are taking in only 500 calories and exercising you are probably in starvation mode and your body is trying to hang onto everything it can. I try to stay closer to 1000 as long as I'm exercising because I burn between 300 - 500 in a session. Next you have to get the water in to be able to process everything properly. Up that and see if that helps. -
Shooting pain..left side incision..what can it be?
Shawn Morrison replied to dat_sweetmami's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
What are you doing for protein? At that stage I would assume mainly shakes still with some food protein. If you aren't able to eat yet I would stick to 3 shakes a day and eat what you can. The intake will come with time I would think. -
Not going to happen....
Shawn Morrison replied to sleeveb430's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That does suck. My office made a big mistake somewhat similar to that. It all worked out in the end. -

Don't quit on yourself. That's the only person you hurt if you give up now. Think of all the effort you have put in. You can't make it if you really want it. I had a few insurance set backs but if you keep pushing you will make it through. Work with the doctor and see if there is anyone at the practice that helps with that stuff. Mine has a lady that works as a patient advocate to fight with insurance companies over this. Keep going and think about how much better you will feel when you drop the weight. -
Cant stand eating dinner
Shawn Morrison replied to buddy love's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I haven't had that issue. I like dinner time. That is when I plan for a more dense protein type food like fish or chicken. Make it something you like or something more meal like than just a soup and maybe that will help. -
meltdown at the grocery store!
Shawn Morrison replied to michelle4873's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It gets way better once you are on regular food. I cook for my family and now that I can eat food again I am able to actually just cook something healthy for all of us and then I'm eating the same things they are. That way I don't feel like I'm left out or missing the good food they are getting. It gets way better at that point. -
Favorite tracking app?
Shawn Morrison replied to asmaclare's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
You can set My Fitness Pal for any levels you want. I have mine dialed in to what my NUT suggested. I have to measure or I know I would screw up so that works best for me. -
I feel real hunger!
Shawn Morrison replied to kari61's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this is the important point. You may get hungry but when you do you can eat just a small amount and it goes away. For me I get just some mild hunger especially at night. I eat and egg and boom gone. Unlike before the surgery when it was like 2 bowls of cereal before I felt satisfied. -
Oh and as far as portable foods go, depending on what stage you are in there are a number of things. I take the vacuum sealed packets of tuna a lot. I love that. I don't mix it but there are fat free things like mayo you can mix in it and I think there are some that are pre made. I also take a hard boiled egg still in the shell most days. Nice built in portable container. Other things like soups are easy. I take a full can on Monday and put it in a Tupperware container and just eat it all week.

I LOVE my blender bottle. I had thought of bringing a bullet with me also but I started using the Blender Bottle and it handles the shakes just fine. Especially the high quality ones that blend up well anyway. If you haven't seen them they are the water bottles with the little wire ball in them. Its like having a small wire wisk in your cup. It really does blend up the shakes perfectly. Its also very nice because after my first shake I go clean it out and then fill it back up with water and mix in my liquid vitamin powder. I don't go anywhere without it!

It really just depends on the individual policy. Either contact Aetna and get their policy, I was able to find it on their website as well or just call your new surgeon. I know mine has a wonderful nurse that makes sure all of that stuff is handled and she reviews it all so she/he would be able to tell you.

Yea I was told that they had to be consecutive. I also had to do 3 months with PCP with the intent of weight loss, 3 months with the NUT, 3 months exercising and 3 months with the psych. After that I was approved in 7 days. Good luck.

First day of liquid diet!
Shawn Morrison replied to michelle4873's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stay busy and you wont even think about it. If you are working or whatever when its time for a shake then just keep going. That way you don't sit there and think oh wow I wish I was eating right now. -
am I being naive? ?
Shawn Morrison replied to PhoenixTheDiva's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also spent time talking with people that did have questions and educating them on how hard this could be and that this was just as tough as any diet and exercise program. Then I backed that up by doing those things. They see how my food intake and food types have changed so they see the diet portion and then they know I hit the Gym almost daily so they see the exercise program. They know it is exactly the same as if I didn't have the surgery. So there has never been a question of "easy way out." -
am I being naive? ?
Shawn Morrison replied to PhoenixTheDiva's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I told EVERYONE I could. I even put it on Facebook. I don't have friends that judge me, if I did they wouldn't be my friends. As such, I have nothing to hide. I want support from my friends and to get that I had to let them know what I was doing. So that's why I spoke out. I have no shame in what I've done so I see no point in hiding it. -
How long was your third week stall?
Shawn Morrison replied to tannak's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had one for the whole second week and then things picked back up in week 3. Only a month or so out so we will see how it goes from here. -
Some general nutrition questions
Shawn Morrison replied to BigDaddyJoe's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Real is the key here. That is the answer to all of the OPs questions. Stick to real whole foods. The less processing the better. Find good balanced numbers like the ones this person sugested and to fill those numbers use whole foods as much as possible. Cards are less impactfull this way and there wont be hidden sugars so you can find the lower fat options like lean meats. -
I didn't see how far out you are so not sure what you can eat yet. What about some sort of bean salad or something. It would keep cold long enough I would think. There are also things like black bean burgers. You can't really heat it up but its something. Look at allrecipes.com under their vegetarian section and you can find some good choices that still involve protein.

Oh man yea get off that for sure. I don't even look at my sons candy. For me thinking about the wasted money of a major surgery and the fact that part of my body is now missing keeps me away from candy fat and carbs.

2 weeks post opt.
Shawn Morrison replied to golfer1204's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have seen coffee on my post op diet pretty much from the start so you should be safe. If the heat bothers your stomach you could also try tea. That's what I have been doing as I was a big Pepsi in the morning person. Its my transition drug. Also be careful with the cream and make sure its light and that you keep track of how much you are using. -
