I'm back and mad as hell!
newat52 replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wow! First, welcome back to the land of the living. I'm so sorry your journey was a living hell. I'm so glad you are ok now and I would be mad a hell too! Wishing you nothing but the best from here out. -
Try some Isopure. Counts as liquid and each oz has 2 grams of Protein. Or try nectar drinks. They are loaded as well. Getting in liquid is a full time job for awhile so if you can get in some protein while you are doing it, you get to kill two birds with one stone. Good luck getting back into the swing of normal life. I'm sure you will do great!

How much protein do I need?
newat52 replied to canadianchick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it would be good to know your height, weight, male? Female? I would offer sincerely off the top. You are barely getting half of your recommended Water intake. You really must get in at least 64 oz per day. You are seriously lacking in Protein and please don't even get me started on the Pasta and the goldfish. I mean that with all due respect. I will tell you what my NUT say my needs are but they may vary for you depending you your stats. I am female, 52 (newat52) get it? I am also self pay. I'm told I need 60-70 grams of protein as a daily target. Now that I am not on any dietary restrictions, most of my protein should be coming from food not shakes. I can't shake my morning shake though. Ha! Pun intended! But I love my morning shake and it gets me off to a good start. but I get half a banana, blueberries and strawberries in mine so it's well rounded. Also, the non negotiable rules of this surgery are protein first, veggies/fruits second and only carbs if there is room. You need to think of your sleeve as Park Place and Boardwalk. It's the high rent district and you need to only give it the best. There is just not enough real estate to go around. If it the crunch you need, try edamame. (sp?) You can get them roasted and crunchy. Good source of protein and great Fiber that will also keep you full longer. Perhaps replace your goldfish as a snack for string cheese? Less calories and 8 grams of protein. It will satisfy you much longer than empty carbs. For extra protein, I will make some protein spiked pudding. Take a small box of pudding and a scoop of unflavored, chocolate, or vanilla Protein powder and 1 1/4 skim milk. Blend them together and divide into two bowls. Chill and you have 15 grams of protein. Try that instead of yogurt. Some people go low to no carbs and that may work for them. For me, I am able to get my protein and good veggies. It seems to work well so far for me. Hope I have been able to offer a couple suggestions for you. Best of luck to you. You can do this! -
But what if we are the other people? What if I am the neighbor of the friend who knows her sister in law's hairdresser's mother's cousin twice removed???? :P

Perhaps try some canned meat such as tuna, chicken or salmon? Or like some other posters said, maybe your body just isn't ready for it yet. When I had trouble getting my protein in, I fell back to my tried and true favorite, protein spiked sugarfree pudding. I could make it as protien rich as I needed to get my calories and protein in. Good luck, you will get there, it just may take a bit longer.

I can give you a preview. Was 6 weeks on Wednesday. The NUT assured me a glass of wine is just fine as did the PA on my post op. Found out last week that we had the opportunity for a trip and now that I have all my dietary restrictions lifted, (that is scary in itself) I tried a glass of wine on Sunday to see how it would go. (3 days early) and I was fine. Hubby and I enjoyed a glass of wine last night but it does get me buzzed pretty fast. Probably because I still can't always get in my 800 calories. Felt a touch of acid reflux but was almost time for my pepcid anyway. Didn't feel the desire to have another glass though and pre surgery I would have for sure. Tummy told me that was plenty. Took my time with it and it lasted almost 2 hours. At least it helped me get to 800 calories but wouldn't recommend it every day. :)

Gall bladder or c section?
newat52 replied to glitta114's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would agree. My sleeve surgery and recovery were remarkably easy. My c-sections were far more painful. I remember it taking 20 minutes to get out of bed it hurt so much. I also think surgery has come a long way in the last 25-30 years. Of course, the c-section also come with post surgery complications every time without fail and last forever. They actually gave me what they took out and I had to bring him home! With the sleeve they keep what they took out. -
Is it realistic to not tell anyone I'm having surgery?
newat52 replied to lyndeeboo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have the same wiring as Chris. P. Bacon. (SHOCKED! SHOCKED! that isn't really your name!) I am just a private person and always have been regarding my personal life and I treat others with the same dignity. With that in mind, I have told no one except my husband and one son. Only him because he lives with us. I don't consider myself as keeping a secret, lying or deception. It's just personal for me. I think folks should and need to do what is best for them personally. If you are the type of person that is more open and comfortable talking about, that is great. I can imagine lots of people find support in that. I have always just been very private. We didn't even tell anyone when we went to the hospital when we had our first baby. Good luck my friend, whatever decision you make, it will be right for you and like other posters have said, this is about you this time. -
Ways to make unjury chocolate taste better
newat52 replied to Roserie's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I use unflavored unjury or chocolate to spike sugarfree pudding. Protein powder never tasted so good. I take a small box of chocolate sugarfree pudding, mix a scoop of unjury powder and blend it for just a few seconds with 1 1/4 cups of skim milk. Then add the chocolate pudding I put it in two bowls and chill it. If you use one scoop it will be about 15 grams of protein and about 170 calories total. If you are in need of more protein and calories use two scoops will add and additional 10 grams of protein and 50 more calories. I also use the chocolate to make a mocha. I take my leftover coffee or decaf if you prefer, a scoop of powder, half a cup of skim milk and 5-6 ice cube and you get a nice mocha. Not quite Starbucks but pretty darn good from where we stand. -
For the first 6 weeks or so you may have a day here and there like that. I sure did. My surgery went without a hitch, no uncontrolled pain and no nausea at all. Went home after one day was was walking a mile before the week was out. I had no problem at all getting my Protein and liquids and was taking my Vitamins. Energy level was great. But every maybe 4th or 5th day I would just not have the stamina or energy to do much. I just took it easy those days and made sure to get a nap (and I NEVER take naps) I would wake up the next day feeling like myself again. I think its just the body's way of making sure you don't overdo it. Listen to your body, major surgery does take time to fully recover from. You will be glad you did.

Long term Mexican surgeries success?
newat52 replied to marielove's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I agree. Long term success should be the same no matter where you have your surgery. I stayed stateside and was self pay. 6 weeks out today and I know as much as I can that my surgery was done properly, as are Mexican sleevers. My long term success is up to me and me alone. -
I was self pay. In Dallas I paid $12,200 out the door. Are we lucky to live in Texas that has so many great surgeons that do this surgery for a very reasonable price?? I think so! I have been overweight all my life and my skin is saggy anyway. I can be heavy and have it sag or normal weight and have it sag. I know either way I'm probably going to have saggy skin. I'm 52 and know it won't bounce back as well. Oh well. I'll take normal weight and saggy skin if I must. At least my skin will match my boobs!

What did it feel like when you woke up from surgery?
newat52 replied to BriDawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, after I got me parked in my room, the nurses told me what to expect for the next 3-5 hours. They told me they would be in every 30 minutes to check on me and every hour to take my vitals. They would try not to disturb me but at the 3 hour mark they would come and wake me and ask me if I could get up and pee and walk. If not, they would be in to ask every hour thereafter. They made sure I understood that I had the moriphine (sp?) pump in my hand. I slept for 3 hours, did not push the pump, they told me. After that they helped me get up and I did not get back in the bed until I went to sleep for the night. I sat in a very, very comfortable chair all afternoon and evening while my hubby sat on the couch. Every hour on the hour I got up walked several laps around the nurses station and was cheered on by the incredibly supportive staff. I did push the pain pump about 5 minutes before I got up, mostly a preventative measure, much like the nausea meds every 4 hours. I stayed ahead of the pain and nausea for the first 48 hours. I slept that night and went home by 9am the next morning. The nurses told me because I walked so much and was able to stay on the liquid schedule without nausea, it probably made the difference in my feeling so well the next morning. I was scheduled to stay two nights but really did not need to so I went home and had the best nap. My advice is don't be a martyr. The nurses told me my surgeon left orders for several different pain and nausea meds so just ask. The drugs are there for a reason. Stay ahead of the pain and nausea and you have the best chance of bouncing back quickly. I realize some people don't do well with some of the nausea meds but if they can work for you, you will be in great shape! Good luck to you! You will do great! -

I have not tried it because I am a wine drinker but someone told me once they were drinking vodka mixed with poweraid zero. Would help keep you hydrated? Just a thought. -

Anyone w/ a BMI under 40 and self pay?
newat52 replied to Linkin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Come to Dallas to have it. Huge selection of top bariatric surgeons. You can have it done quite reasonably compared to other parts of the county. Range is anywhere from 10k to 14k. As I stated in an earlier post, mine was $12,000 out the door including everything. Not the least expensive and not the most. I guess it's true, everything must be bigger in Texas! -
Life is good with coffee. Just sayin....

You are perfectly normal. Most women at least do have an emotional time during the first week. I could not understand why I was just crying all day one day. (it was day 5 or 6 post op) I had no regrets, It was just like major PMS, not the bitchy kinds, just purely the girly crying kind. It got better. Your body is going through major changes, give it time. Things are about to get sooooo much better! Isopure can also be purchased through Amazon. While the taste is not my favorite thing, nothing will give you the protien bang for your buck like the Isopure. You can Water it down or add it to G2. Really a good way to get that Protein in though. And your liquids. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Hang in there! :)

lap band to sleeve revision post op day 6
newat52 replied to kwashington617's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
And each day will get better and better! Keep up the good work! I am almost 6 weeks out and am feeling on top of the world! -
It's wonderful that your hubby is so supportive. I don't understand how people do it without the total and complete support of their other half. That will enable you to get through this surgery and recovery all the much easier because of his support. I am so blessed to have my husband as my rock. He loves me no matter what and I am so thankful and grateful.

I also make a Mocha out of chocolate Protein Powder and throw the rest of my cup of coffee that I don't drink add a little skim milk and my oh my it's good!

Is this really healthy?
newat52 replied to StefanieT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sipping is a full time job but just tiny sips or steady little spoonfuls of crushed ice chips work too. If you have a Sonic in your area they sell their ice and it is the perfect little pellet size. Cold liquids helped me best but some folks found warm worked for them so maybe try different temps and see what your new tiny tummy likes. Like the posters said, not to worry about the calories right now, just liquids and if you can Protein. Maybe try Isopure if you have not. They are considered a clear liquid and they are 2 oz of protein for each oz. and have different flavors. It will count as protein and Water and get some much desired calories. For me, even though I had an easy time of the surgery and recovery, I had a complete meltdown about 5 days out. I think everything just caught up with me and from what others have said, its pretty normal. So glad you are ok from your ordeal, I can't imagine how scared you were so give yourself some time. -
I'm telling you, the coffee made a big difference for the bowels. Makes me happy inside and out! :)
