    Dealing with emotions

Congrats on your son's graduation. I'm sure you feel very proud. Funny, my age never bothered me, it was our boys miletsones that always made me feel my age. Have watched 2 high school, 2 college, 1 law school and 1 wedding. They will always be my baby boys. :-) Big congrats on your accomplishment as well. I bet it feels so very good to Celebrate in your new way. I look forward that. 11 weeks out now and just getting the hang of this new life. So far, its good, very good indeed.

First night home, How to sleep?

Try a recliner. I started out in the bed and would go there after a few hours. I tried bed first on my back with pillows to make me more comfortable. I am not a back sleeper so it was hard. He may need help reclining back but it was much more comfortable. Tell him to hang in there. It will get so much better. To you, thank you for being a supportive spouse. My husband was my rock and I am so grateful for all he did for me and continues to do. I know how your husband must feel.

    Help me!

The first few days are the hardest. I would love to tell you it's easy but it's not. I agree with the above posts, it does get easier after the first 3-4 days. I was a grumpy but during that time and just tried to avoid contact with everyone, for their sake. Just hang in there after you start, by the end of of you will have the confidence to sail through the post op phase! It's kind of like having a baby, pregnancy and labor/delivery suck but you forget all that afterwards and would do it all again! You will love your sleeve! Good luck!

    Panera Bread

Check out their "hidden menu" I was there the other day with a group of ladies and ordered the power humus and chicken salad. Oh Wow! Was it ever good! Packed with Protein and so stinkin good it was ridiculous! About 300 calories and 30 or so grams of protien if I recall. They have 6 or 7 items on it and I sure can't wait to try every one of them. Of course, can't come close to finishing it but wowza! was it good! I'm 11 weeks out and have lost 32 post op and 45 including pre op. Not as fast as others but it's coming off and I know it will never come back! Congrats on your success! I can say happily, I know EXACTLY how you feel!
  5. My Surgeon recommended pepcid chewables. They did the trick for me.
  6. Or maybe we all have a different definition of miracle? For me, this is a miracle. :)
  7. You are so right. I think a lot of us fall into the "all or nothing" dieting mentality. I know I did (do). What is this thing called moderation? I sure didn't (don't) know. Changing that mindset is and will be my most challenging aspect (outside of the first month constipation issue, but that's a whole other story!). I know without a doubt it will challenge me in the weeks and months to come as I learn this new lifestyle. Throwing out my "expectations" in this journey is not easy. Its hard. Really, really hard. However, if I am to succeed, I must, must, must master that concept. Pre op diet?. Check. All in. Post op phases? Check. All in. I'm on your own now and must own what I eat? Gulp! So far, all in. What's going to happen when I finally give in and have a chip? I can only pray! Scared shitless? You bet! That is when the "real" work begins. We do need to be patient with ourselves and others. Everyone's journey is a different path, but with the same goal, to become a healthy person at a healthy weight. I hope people are really doing the research and going into this with eyes wide open but I don't think everyone does. Some people do think this is a magic bullet and then are very let down when they are realizing after the fact that it's not. I think the realistic people are the ones that are really scared prior to surgery. I know I was. Note to all of us: Must. Learn. Patience. Note to self: Must. Master. Moderation.
  8. Please don't leave, we need more realistic folks in here! I do think that a lot of people think this is a magic bullet. Its not. At all. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done but the best thing I have done for my health and would do it again in a New York minute! I just commented the other day on poster who is considering the sleeve and she cited some examples on how she is in the mindset that losing 100 pounds in 14 months is minimal. All the examples she gave the loss was on average over 7 pounds per month! I commented that 7 pounds per month on average is ANYTHING but minimal! She disagreed with me and insisted that to her it is. A few do manage to lose 200 pounds in a year but those are usually very high BMI people. I do believe she will be let down if she "only" loses 75 pounds in 6 months. I would be dancing on the table for that! Of course my favorite one was a poster who was about 7 months out or so and had not lost any weight in several months and was wondering why her sleeve was not working. Only being about 5 weeks out at the time didn't give me a lot of experience to draw from but I asked if she was following the the NUT eating plan? Was she working out? Drinking the necessary Water? Was she eating slider foods? Her reply was while she would love to be doing that, she had no self control and therefore was hungry all the time and following the NUT plan and working out was not a viable option. (I promise I am not making this up!) Wow. Just wow! What can you say to that? We need to be patient, the weight didn't come on over night and it won't leave that way either. All I know is that at almost 12 weeks post op, I feel better, inside and out, I look better and I am so much healthier than I was pre surgery and even though I am only half way there, I know it will come off, it has no choice as long as I follow the plan. It's worth waiting for and celebrating the accomplishments along the way!
  9. Hang in there heatwhip, it will get better. Perhaps try the pepcid chewables? I did those and could chew them into nothing. Was taking those the day after surgery. Oh, and be on the look for the "meltdown" lots of folks get it about 5-7 days out. Your emotions just catch up and it hits you like a ton of bricks. Not everyone gets it but lots do. After that it really starts getting better. Each week that goes by gets better and better!

    Caffine?

It's really up to your stomach. I think we need to use our common sense when it comes to that. I have been enjoying a cup of coffee since about 4 weeks out. My stomach can handle it. I have no problems getting well over 64 oz of Water each day. I usually make it through 1/2 to 2/3 of the cup then I'm done. Everyone seems to get different orders from their doctors. Funny, we all had the same surgery so you would think we would all get the same after care.

    Can we eat cashews?

Have you tried dry roasted edamame? If you love nuts you may love these as well. They are so good and crunchy. 1/4 cup has only 130 calories and 14 grams of protein!
  18. newat52

    trigger foods

chocolate, carbs, chips, bread, Pasta. I am 11 weeks out today and have not had them at all. Between pre-op and post op, since all the refined sugar and white flour got out of my system, I have not craved them. At all. I have not tried them since. If it's not bothering me, I don't see the point. Big part of it, it's a slippery slope for me. Don't want to fall off the edge. I feel strong and healthy but not invincible.

    Driving home?

I don't think there is an american hospital that will release you to drive. Plus you will not be up to it. Be safe!
  20. I wish you the best of luck! With all due respect though, if you can lose 30 pounds per month another way, why not do that? I know you say you want now and want it fast but that's one step off instant gratification and again, with all due respect, isn't that what got all of us in trouble in the first place? Patience is something that must be learned during this journey. There will be weeks when you lose no weight at all. Your body needs time to catch up. If you have realistic expectations you will not be let down. Just trying to keep it real.
  21. My question would be what are your expectations? In all the examples you cited, they are all on average over 7 pounds per month! That is not minimal by any means. The sleeve works, if you work. If you fall back into your old eating habits, it will not work. If you just follow the very few rules of eating, it will work and work well. If you go into some of the threads where people are complaining that their sleeve is not working, when all is uncovered, they are not following the simple rules and probably not exercising. Don't be discouraged, change is hard and yes, I'm sure everyone was thinking prior to surgery will this work for me? I know I did. It's a big, life changing decision but if you work for it, it will be the best thing you can do for your health. I am 11 weeks out and I already know this with every Fiber of my being. Good luck, you will know what is right for you.
  22. You will get very different opinions. I was given the all clear by my surgeon and NUT for a glass of wine at 6 weeks out. However, like with coffee, alcohol can be dehydrating. I was advised if I have issues getting in my liquids, then it's not ok. Like posters said above, try it at home first You don't know how your body will react to it. Also, to add to what was said, the sugar in the margarita could send you to pottyville PDQ. There is a lot of sugar in them. A small, frozen margarita has approx 500 calories. I have been enjoying a glass of wine since about 6 weeks. My husband and I enjoy opening a nice bottle of wine on the weekends and trying different ones. He always asks first though, how am I on my liquids? He knows full well that I am like a well. My typical day sees at least 80 oz of Water go into it so hydration is never an issue. If it was I would not be having it. I wouldn't do anything to screw up this opportunity! Everyone is different and seems like everyone gets different advice fro their Dr.'s. Do you have a NUT that you see? You can ask them if you do. Now, if you really want a free for all fight, ask about carbonation or not telling the world about your surgery!
  23. At Costco they are about $ 22 but you get 18
  24. I took it nice and slow. I had not had any adverse reactions to food and didn't want to start puking then. I am almost 11 weeks and have been off dietary restrictions since 6 weeks. I still have not tried Pasta, bread or chip and crackers, mostly because I have not had the craving for it and it can be a slippery slope for me. I Also have not done steak or salad. I have been expanding on veggies and meats. I do eat a lot of fish because I love it! I make Soups and chili in large quantities and freeze it. Love to cook. I guess I have really just tried to eat normally. I still do a Protein shake in the mornings but I have been doing that for several years. Jeez, that probably was not much help!
  25. Silly girl, it never rains in California!
