March Sleevers Where are You
misslady replied to GrannyGoes4it's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

The surgeon perfoming my surgery told me (I am diabetic about 3 yrs on Metformin) that if I had been diabetic alonger period of time or was on insulin or had poorly controlled diabetes on oral meds he would recommend the RNY for "curing" the diabetes. But since that is not my case the VSG would take care of it. I know this is such a life changing decison and it is not easy.

Ten months after sleeve and loving life
misslady replied to aboutime4me's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
You deserve to enjoy life and live each day to the fullest! Congrats. -
Had the EGD and it showed chronic gastritis and peptic esophagitis both from acid reflux damage, also a hital hernia adding to reflux. It can be repaired when I have the sleeve. But it's good they want o see inside your system BEFORE surgery so there are no surprises during surgery. Think of it as a safety procedure.

This forum has helped me as i travel to become a sleever. It is very hard when those we love don't understand or support our decision. But we here offer all the support, acceptance, and virtual hugs u need.

Single Incision and Abdominal Wall Catheters
misslady posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have confidence in my surgeon. He will be doing a single incision surgery. One of the first in the Houston area to have started this. He will be using the SPIDER to do the surgery. A very cool tool (Google it). But he also will be placing two very thin abdominal wall catheters in place to help control pain. They are hooked up tp a pain pump that dispenses Marcaine or other drug of his choice for pain. Has nayone had this? Did it really help with the pain? What about the single incision surgery, how did that go? All of these are suppose to really decrease recovery time and pain. Has any other sleever used or scheduled with Dr. Sherman Yu? He is the Bariatric Medical Director for Park Plaza Hospital in Houston? -

Single Incision and Abdominal Wall Catheters
misslady replied to misslady's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oh great! Well you know i have questions.. The catheters are suppose to be hooked up to the pain pump. Did you have that? I too have to get a hernia repaired. Did you have just one incision? How long was the surgery? How long did you have to do the preop diet? What do you Wish you had done before surgery now that you have had it? Sorry but just trying to gather all the information can. -

Way to go!!!!

I am in the process of all the things I need completed to be submitted to insurance company for approval. I had my EGD today and it revealed a hiatal hernia. The surgeon stated he could repair it when I have the VSG. Did anyone have both repaired? I am wondering what does that mean for recovery time, pain, getting back to work liquid intake.... I plan to ask him when I go for my follow up (and not under anesthesia cocktail) . So nay feed back would be greatly appreciated.

OMG - Looks like I'm approved!
misslady replied to Vicki0618's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh no!!! Hang in there, that old saying nothing good comes easy will be true in this case. But so worth it, make sure you stay in the loop between doctors office and insurance. -

Do you ever regret your surgery?
misslady replied to Strangefruit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well any little doubts that I may have been having (surgery not scheduled yet) were erased as I left the doctors office with yet another obesity related diagnosis-obstructive sleep apnea, another blood pressure pill (which makes 4 a day just for that), nexium added for the GERD. So my pill total is between 9-13 pills a day. Also kidney damage is begining due to this blood pressure and diabetes. Moving forward to pschy consult Friday then submitting for approval. -

Do you ever regret your surgery?
misslady replied to Strangefruit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have thought about if I must go this extreme to get rid of 55/60 pounds. My meds and Co morbidity issues make me say yes most days, but no I'm not 100 percent sure. But I keep doing what it takes to get approval. -
Slow loser? Worried about being a slow loser? Why being a slow loser is pretty awesome
misslady replied to Sassafras's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have wondered about what rate I may loose since my bmi is just almost 37. I do know the larger you are you tend to loose quicker. As long as it's steady I will be happy. Being able to throw away bp meds and diabetic meds it is worth however long it takes. -
Hey ladies, so for those that have been sleeved, I'm doing my psych this Friday and then we submit to insurance. I want to know if we keep some junk in the trunk with all the loss? Not really sure how much I want to loose, whatever gets me off diabetes and blood pressure meds.

My enthusiasm has fizzled a bit... :-(
misslady replied to Beautyandbeyond's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hate to hear that the start has been tough. Look for another office that offers a support group. I'm really glad my doctor here in Houston has a wonderful staff and support system. This is a major life changing decision and having all the support, especially from the one we are putting our trust and life in their hands, should give us good support. Hope it gets better. -
People's comments and frustration they can cause!
misslady posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been carrying this around for 2 days and I have to get it off my chest! People and their comments can cause some frustartion. I am taking all the steps to get approval for sleeve surgery hopefully by March Spring Break time. So I have decided that I am only sharing this decision with my husband and 1 co-worker until day of surgey I might tell siblings and mother. Just discovered on Tuesday after my EGD that I have chronic active gastritis and peptic esophagitis all from GERD and the hiatal hernia that was discovered. I must admit that I have been on an emotional roller coaster about my decision to have the surgery. I have been surprised at the mental process taking place. Some days I am extremely confident and others I am full of doubt. Started this 2 years ago and when I mentioned it to family it was a total meltdown from everybody about why not to have it. Even my 14 year old broke down in tears about not having it. My fiance' now husband was totally against it to. So I did not poceed thinking I will do better. Fast forward two years and there has been more health crisis, more medications added and about 10 more pounds. I am taking between 10-13 pills a day for hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, pituitary issues and just discovered I have sleep apnea and that has been causing things to go out of wack! I may not have a very high BMI (36) but my co morbidities are no joke. People always say but you are not "big" enought to have that kind of surgery, just stop eating and start exercising. Well helllllooo if it were that easy we would all be in perfect health and form. Even my husband now is on board because of how he has seen me have health crisis. I am 5'8" and weigh 236 as of this morning. However no one else would be on board and I am not discussing this choice now because I don't need the negativity. I have been in mental mouring about the things that will change from the vain(clothes and shoes-i have thousands of dollars worth of clothing-over 300 pair of shoes) I battled a shopping addiction. I am wondering if this will flair up when I have to buy a new wardrobe. My daughter(now 16) saw me looking at a video and she freaked again and started with mom please don't do it. We can work out. I know they think they have my best interest but please support me if not my decision. A co worker overheard me talking about the surgery and she went ballistic about not doing it, no schedule it, she has this diet I can try, I am going to look like I am sick or on crack blah blah blah. It really did get to me. Sorry it's long but maybe here some one can understand all these different emotions, thoughts and dilemma's. How can I be both full of doubt and anxious to just get it done. I know I do not have 100 pounds to give and believe my body will stop before I get to that point. But the thought of being diabetes free and possibly high blood pressure and cholesterol free makes it worth it I know. The weight loss is an added benefit. Thanks guys for letting em vent and keep me in your prayers and I move forward in this journey to a better and different life.- 19 replies

A few questions? ( just had surgery on 1/28)
misslady replied to kcinpa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon does a scope after surgery before he closes up to check for leaks. It is probably gas, do you use the gas x strips?
