    Foods you cant have again

I think there are the not supposed to have (carbonated bevs) items, and then the things we should choose not to have because they are foods that will get in the way of our weight loss and what probably caused us to become obese to begin with (pizza, pasta, wings, meat with skin like hot dogs, brats, sausages, high sugar foods, etc) I still indulge in a bite or two every once in a while, but, I get the full feeling so quick, I have never felt guilty for the few bites. Nothing bothers my stomach except steak, it just makes me really nauseous so I avoid all red meat now altogether. Bread isn't the easiest to digest either but I really dont eat sandwiches any more so its not a big deal. I was not a big popcorn person before, but I have had a handful or two since surgery 7 months ago and had no problem. I have grapes all the time, also no problem. The best advise I have is to manage your protein, always always always eat protein first. You will fill up fast and not feel the urge nor have a desire to eat the "bad" stuff anyways. I'm still losing 7 months out, down to 198 from 287. Weight loss has stalled a little, but I do admit I luvs the beer so now that summer is winding down and I won't be indulging after my kids baseball games on a hot summer night with a cold beer or four, I hope the weight loss will kick back up to 2 lbs a week again. Good luck!

    best decision ever.... down 85lbs.

best decision ever is right! Congrats to you! I feel the same and you and I have very similar goals! My VSG was on 1/22. My heaviest on January 8th (the day I found out I was having surgery 13 days later) was 287 LBS. Day of surgery I was 271. Today I am 221. Total wl is exactly 1/2 way to go! I am so glad I decided to have the surgery, it has changed my life. Keep up the awesome momentum and good luck on the 2nd half of your journey!
  5. you have to eat to lose weight! If you undereat, your body will hold onto the fat, you are starving it, and it wont let it go! I upped my calories after a 3 week stall, and dropped 3 LBS that week! I'm averaging between 1,100 and 1,300 every day and am losing 1.2-3 lbs per week. Eat your protein, drink your water, exercize at least 3-4 times per week, you will lose! It's all math.
  6. oh yes, I had very similiar pain around my large incision-I think it is very normal. My "main" incision hurt for weeks, even after all the other one's were totally healed. It felt like the skin and the organ were sow together at times! Just take it really slow!

    Before Surgery date 2/22

From the album: First Before and After photos

my 11 year old daughter took the 'before' picture of me the morning I was leaving for the hospital/surgery. That morning, I was so scared, it really felt like an out of body experiance looking back on it, I completely forgot she took a photo of me! Just the other day, she told me I looked great-I said, I think I am making good progress, but I have a long way to go. She reminded me that she had a before photo, and that I really needed to see it just so "I could really see for myself, how much I've changed in the past 4 months". I cried when I looked at the photo, I couldnt believe how bad I looked. I took the "after" picture of myself, just to see if there really was a huge difference. Then, the tears of joy came. I still have a long way to go (I am at 65 LBS lost, still need 65LBS to lose all the excess weight) but at least now, I can see the girl I once was slowing coming back.
  9. hi guys. I am frustrated. How many calories per day is everyone netting in order to achieve 1 LB-2LB per week weight loss? I cant figure this out for the life of me and It's starting to really depress me. I use myfitnesspal religiously. I have it set at 1,100 calories per day. I exercize and win another 200-450 per day depending on the workout and the length of time I exercize. Anyhow, I have no trouble eating 1,100, also no trouble getting in 70-90 grams of protein. So why am I not losing weight? too many calories? too little? what gives? Preop diet weight was 286 LBS, I had my sleeve on 2/22. I was 271 on surgery day which was 13 days later. Today I am 228 LBS. I realize that I have made HUGE weight loss, 60 LBS is nothing to be sad about, it's only been 15 weeks, but this recent stall is really hard to push through. I have been up and down from 231-228 for 3 weeks now. Trying to press through this and hit my initial goal of being at 220 LBS by my birthday which is June 10th. At this pace I will be there by the end of summer not in 6 weeks.

    Pain after surgery

I have 4 kids, all young, oldest 11 and youngest is 6 so I totally relate to your concerns. I will tell you I had 1 vaginal delivery and 3 sections so I thought I was an expert in pain management-this pain was far worse than I ever expected. Do not under estimate the help you will need at least for the first few days home. Plan on having rides ahead of time for the kids to all activities. If possible have someone come over to do laundry and grocery shop for the kids meals. Also, a few days before surgery stock up on broth and protein shakes and get your pain meds before you leave! The gas pain in my shoulder was almost unbearable and the nausea was horrific for days. You'll be weak and want to sleep a lot so try and find a way to have some support in place, it really is a big deal, you will need help. Good luck!
  11. I will be 5 weeks tomorrow, started reintroducing solid food over the weekend. Here's what I've learned-you have to separate the food if you want an accurate measurement of protein. So, we took kids to lunch at Hard Rock Cafe yesterday, I ordered the chicken club sandwich on whole wheat bun. Took off the bacon (just cuz it's a high fat protein and I won't go back there for a while) took off the lettuce and the top of the bun. Had 3 small bites and was STUFFED. Also subbed the fries for green beans. Waited for 5 minutes after I felt like I couldn't eat another bite, and had 2 bites of the beans and I was really done at this point! Moral of the story, counted 250 calories, maybe got in a whopping 10 grams of protein, not going to cut it if all my meals go like that.

    Pain 10 days post op

I had pain in that main incision too until week 3! Hurt the most when I laid on my right side, them in the morning until i got moving around. I am 4 weeks and 2 days today and I feel awesome now! Zero pain.

    Sugery This Moning

I had my 4 wk post pop today, it the 1st week I can say I was pain free. It takes a full week for the dry mouth, gas pains and exhaustion to subside. Maybe another full week until no more muscle pain in the abdomen. Third week you'll start feeling better, but will still have low energy. Just focus on managing through the pain for today/tonight. Get up and walk the halls! You have to move to get the gas out.

    weight loss stalled

I'm 4 weeks today. I had major stall week 3, didn't lose a single pound! Soooo frustrating because my calories per day is usually under 600! It looks like I will lose 2-3 lbs this week so in guess my body is just trying to recover from the shock of what happened!
  16. Broth, but make sure it's just warm. My surgeon told me hot tea, coffee etc. not a good idea. Room temp water or broth is best. I'm 4 weeks out today, I am finally 100% pain free, but it lingered for 3 weeks! The gas pain is so bad! All I can tell you is to keep moving through the pain. The other thing that helped me "move the gas" was to lay in the floor on your back, pull your legs to your chest and just lay there like that for a few minutes. So this about once an hour. It does get better!

    salmon

Find a soy, burbon and brown sugar recipe on the Internet. Marinate overnight, grill or bake. It's amazing! 21 grams of protein in a 4 oz serving of salmon!
  18. I am (was) a HUGE pasta eater too. I find since my surgery (4 weeks ago today) on no longer have the cravings for carbs. I do love the cheese, sauce and meat though so I made lasagna with out the pasta and I'll tell you I didn't miss the pasta one bit! Make some small meatballs, 1 1/2 inch in diameter, or a about 2 oz each. Put them in crockpot with a jar of your favorite sauce or home made. Cook on low for 5-6 hours. When done, smash with a fork a meatball, two TBS sauce and throw two tbs of ricotta cheese on top, it's delish! Also, when I am feeling like I want just try some of the foods I'm avoiding, I remind myself that this is the weight loss period so stay focused on why you had the surgery to begin with. If you just can't resist then try a trick a friend of mine who had bypass 10 years ago told me-take a bite, chew it very well and spit it out.
  19. anyone else have the blues? I'm trying to stay positive but I do feel like I need to vent a little. I havent seen the scale move down a single pound in 1 1/2 weeks! Whats up with that? Maybe I am eating too few calories? I feel like I lost more weight when I did weight watchers, 2-3 LBS per week. I'm eating 1/2 the calories that I did then, and not losing anything! I've been darn near close to 60 grams of protein a day for the past 2 weeks, managing to keep my caloric intake to anywhere between about 500-700 calories per day, sometimes even less. Mostly eating cottage cheese, eggs, yogurt, broth and the protein shakes. I have had some meat, I grind it up in the food processor or my surgeon said he was fine with any meat I could easily smash with a fork, so a meatball etc.....Still struggling with the water-maybe 30-OZ total water, then another 15 OZ other fluids. Yesterday every time I ate or drank anything, I had this horrorble gurgurling sound in my throat-and I was in a training session for the whole day so very embarrassing. Today, I had my 1st piece of toast in over 5 weeks. I put 3 oz of tuna fish and just a tiny squirt of light hellman's, threw it on top of the wheat toast & it and it went down really well and it seemed to be just the right amount of food. I was full, not stuffed. No issues what so ever, no burping or gurguling, it was all good. Now tonight, I am feeling horrible. Stomach ache, diarreah which I thought was behind me & I have a horrible head cold on top of all this. BLAH. Maybe I just need to stay off the scale for a week, and take care of this cold & maybe I'll feel better and the food issues I am having will become less bothersome.

    Completely frustrated.

I was just going to make a similar post! I havent been exercizing too much-walked a bit a few days after I got out of the hospital, but its been so snowy and cold out, my motivation is horrible right now. Plus, I am really sore/tender, not sure exactly what or how to describe the pain I am having in my upper right middle abdomen. It's not right at the incision that I guess I will say is the "main incision"-its the one that they pulled the bag out with the stomach (uggh, the thought freaks me out a bit) but its not incisional pain, its pain above it, almost feels like its right in front of my new stomach? It's either muscular or maybe the organ itself? Who knows, either way, it still hurts when I sleep, hurts when I wake up, and has been bothering me for the past 2 days. I am wondering if I should call my surgeon? I dont want to be this nervous nilly patient who calls at any little issue though. I am still only 15 days post op, I supposed this pain will linger for a while. But, it does make me not want to exercize because I dont want to make it worse. Also, my weight loss at a complete standstill which is really bumming me out. I actually gained a pound over the weekend as well! Not sure how that is possible, I am under 700 calories a day! I am doing a pretty good job of getting in protein, yesterday was the first day I exceeded 60 grams. I did 2 full protein shakes, and for dinner had 2 table spoons of ricotta cheese, and smashed up a very small meatball, maybe an ounce or so of meat. I had 2 tbs of sauce on it. I have to say, it was delicious! I had a hard time eating it slowly and had a little reflux right afterward.....anyhow, very bummed about the stalled weight loss. I though the weight would continue to pour off me for the next few months so sad that I am 2 weeks post op and still at the same total weight loss as I was 5 days ago. My pre op diet weight was 284 LBS, surgery weight was 271 LBS today I am at 252 LBS.
  21. I have been concerned over the same thing. I just accepted a new job and then found out the following day my surgery was scheduled and happening 13 days later so I was worried about what to tell my new employer regarding travel. I ended up pushing my start date out until Monday, Feb 11th because I was told I had madatory orientation at HQ my 1st 2 days on the job. I am in sales as well, so lots of air travel is expected of me in my role. So, I spoke to my surgeon at the final appointment I had a few days before my surgery which was 2 weeks ago yesterday, and he was OK with my plan to fly to NYC on the 11th, that gave me just about 3 full weeks post op. He just said to make sure I got up often to stretch, and to keep my feet active while sitting and highly recommended I buy myself a pair of compression socks. I got a pair the next day which you can buy at any medical supply store. I think the highest compression you can buy with out a perscription is 15/20. They will fit you for a pair when you go in. They keep the blood flowing in your legs to prevent clots, which I think we are all concidered at risk for up to 6 months post op. My trip is only a little over an hour flight so my surgeon was OK with it. He did tell me he would not have OK'd a trip that close to my surgery that was more than 4 hours so you may want to talk to your surgeon. Better to be safe than sorry.
  22. You could reply you are going then the morning of the wedding send her a text and say you've got a horrible flu, fever throwing up the whole 9 yards. Also for what its worth today is 2 weeks post op for me and I actually feel really good I'm back to work I'm exercising with the exception of a little bit of pain in my one incision, i would be totally up for a wedding today so if you reply you're going you may find that you actually do feel up for going at least for a little while!
