Consequences of no protein
melissa130 replied to laughingheels's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love the shakes thank God. I always feel like I have given my body a gift after I drink one. I get all my protein in-- up 100 grams per day. But still losing hair. I think with rapid weight loss - hormones go crazy- and do all kinds of things with your body. -
see a doctor--pronto

To tell or not to tell that is the question.......................
melissa130 replied to Beach Lover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
keep it to yourself!!! You will never regret it. You would regret telling them. There is no reason to give up the secret. I tell people I follow the Atkins diet and work out. I tell them I eat no junk food and very low carbs-- which is true. Your new diet and lifestyle is what will get you thin--- the surgery is just helping you get there. Keep it to yourself--- you will be happier that way. -
The more thin I get--- the more painfully aware I am of how so many people are predjudice against overweight folks.. All around me, I hear strangers say awful things. They don't know I was fat. Amazing and sad. I find myself going out of my way to be nice to obese people in public. Cuz it really hurt a lot when I was there. I DO FEEL BETTER-- EMOTIONALLY AND BODY. How can I not? And everybody knows when you lose weight you feel better--even though you continue to do everything you always did...

I am sure your dumping syndrome was from the type of yogurt you chose. Diane 65 is right. I only eat chobani greek yogurt- plain flavor-- very high in protein--very low in sugar. I hated the taste at first but now I love it. I have never had a stall. But I really watch my carbs!!

The higher the BMI-- the longer your liquid pre-op diet should be. Surgeon's who do not require the pre-op diet are most likely not at a bariatric standard of excellence center. Be happy your doc ordered it. He knows what he is doing. Don't cheat. This will also help mentally prepare you for the post-op phase.

Average loss with the sleeve is 60% of excess weight?!?!
melissa130 replied to Nicolanz's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Oh I think at 5'1" - the chance of you getting to 130 pounds is absolutely attainable!!! You can DO IT! Strive to work out 7 days a week. Make it routine - like taking a shower. It will pay off.You don't have to work out 7 days a week for the rest of your life- just for now- while you try to reach your goal. In just a week or 2 you will see results. Just don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat so don't get discouraged by the scale. The long term weight loss will be there on the scale eventually. Can't wait to hear how you progress. -
Ldallas-- I am thinking you must be pretty young. The truth is 99% of people that lose so much weight do feel better. I sure do. Mentally and physically. However, I agree with you. I find it amazing when so many people out there think they are sending a compliment-- but they couldn't be more insulting. At first I got so snappy. One lady at work said to me--- " Wow- you look great--you so morbidly obese" in front of every body. I hated her!!!! But now I do not let these people get to me. I refuse to let them bring me down.

Average loss with the sleeve is 60% of excess weight?!?!
melissa130 replied to Nicolanz's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
If you exercise you WILL reach that goal of 130 pounds. I am just about 6 months out--- the scale moves downward every single week -- EXCEPT for the weeks I don't get to the exercising. It makes all the difference in the world and it will hinder you if you don't do it. How tall are you?? Your height could be why the doc is giving you that number of 160- to 180. Start moving. You will love the way you feel and you will love not having any stalls in your weight loss. And you if are 5'7" or below-- you can absolutely weigh 130. That is the new number I want to get to also. Keep us posted sweetie. And MOVE girlie!! -

This surgery still doesn't have much long term data out there. We are all pushing this thing into the books. Ten years from now that 60% number will for sure be higher. -

ah.. sugar is sugar -
Going to a party today where I will see people that I haven't since Christmas. My surgery was in January and I have lost 96 pounds. At Christmas my skirt/pant size was a 24. Tops were 24 to 28 or XXXL. My sister bought me an adorable skirt and a sexy slamming blouse. Skirt size ---> 6 !!!!!!!!!!! The blouse is a plain MEDIUM. I cried and so did she. I kept looking at the tag on the skirt like it had to be wrong. What a moment. I feel liberated and I feel like I have finally won the battle. I have no regrets going through with this operation. I am very glad I didn't have the bypass or the band. I feel very healthy. Happy girl!! Have a good day everybody.

I am really glad I went to a hospital that was stamped as a Bariatric Center of Excellence. The nutritionist is specialized for weight loss surgery diets. All surgeons in this field should make this available to their patients. And waiting to October to see somebody is very long in my opinion. You should absolutely call them and tell them you want to see them atleast in August. And schedule yourself an appointment every month with a nutritionist until you have been well adjusted to the new eating plan. And make sure the specialize in weight loss surgery--the needs are so different. You need their skills.

200lbs from goal / body issues
melissa130 replied to makemyownluck's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would much rather deal with loose skin that I can hide under clothes as opposed to fat rolls busting out of my clothes. I would rather deal with loose skin any day over worrying about not fitting in chairs or breaking the ones that I do fit in. I think people that get upset about the loose skin need to realize that it is ok and something can be done about it. Plastic surgery. Any pound lost means you are becoming healthier! -
I am 6 months out and still don't drink alcohol. I first wanted to wait till my stomach was really healed. I still take carafate every day and will for a couple more weeks. Alcohol can cause damage/ulcers to the new stomach. The sleeve is very fragile. Just wait till you are all done with most of your post-op meds. In my case, for 6 months. Looking forward to that first glass of wine.

Protein bars- helpful or harmful?
melissa130 replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you. I do think that when you subtract the fiber you get a better, more accurate carb count. I will definately try these. Cinnamon roll--mmmm- making my mouth water! LOL -

Kardashians don't even look like Kardashians. All the make-up and fake everything- fake hair, fake boobs, botox, collagen...the list goes on. Your pic is pretty. -

I can only say that a professional to talk to is of utmost importance for this journey. I go to a psychologist 3 times a month and a behavior specialist 1 time a month. I go to a support group specific for weight loss surgery once a month. It makes all the difference in the world. They really know how to teach you to get through this stuff. You will never deal with body image issues on your own...you have to be taught. You have to be taught a whole new though process and you have to be taught new behaviors...that is the only way you can learn--right? Call somebody Monday morning and make an appointment. Simply just talking about your feelings with the right person helps you put everything in prospective. Call somebody -
Folks that use Google +, and/or Youtube
melissa130 replied to shoopaie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish i knew how to do these video blogs. I will watch yours. Amazing world we live in to be able to connect with people going through the same thing. I have not told anybody outside my immediate family about what I have been through. Big secret to all my coworkers/ and friends and other family. So this feels so good to feel connected to other people. I probably would not do a video because I don't want people to recognize me. That is why I don't have a profile pic. -
1 day 12 hours...of being fat
melissa130 replied to missyjoy2078's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was scared too...but once you actually get in there everything happens really fast. Starting with getting registered and then all the nurses fretting over you--time will fly. I had the morphine pump too.. was very happy with that!! Take a deep breath and imagine 6 months from now-- possibly being at you goal weight and loving it! Is that you in the picture???? Good luck and get back here quick and let us know how you are doing!! -
Protein bars- helpful or harmful?
melissa130 replied to Reigo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don---- what is the carbohydrate gram count on the Quest bars-- I have been looking for one lower in carbs and haven't found one I like. -
i made my shakes thicker too and that made me feel fuller. Hang in there..because as soon as you can start to eat pureed and soft foods you will not be hungry. Also..it is a proven fact that often when you "feel" hungry--your brain is trying to tell you that you need water. Try drinking more water, see if that helps ya a bit till you can eat.

Traveling for PS alone
melissa130 replied to michelleandcolten's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
michelleandcolten~ are you in a financial positon to hire some type of medical assistant/ or nursing assistant to travel home with you. You could offer to pay for the flight for the person and then pay about $10.00 an hour for their time. I would estimate you could do that total for under $500.00. It would be worth it. I feel so concerned for you and I don't know why. I certainly don't want to frighten you. -

Your bravery amazes me! Please keep us posted. I never heard of a female urinal. That would have been handy a few times in my life. -

So all that surgery can be done in one day? How long will you be under general anesthesia? I am just curious cuz soon I will be starting this same research for myself.
