My Doc told me that Black women who've had WLS (and in general) tend to lose weight slower than any other demographic...has anyone found this to be true from their own experiences? -AJ

Surgeon Recommends Gastric Bypass Instead of Sleeve
fattyaj replied to GSFan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot of doctors recommend this because there's more research on the success rate of bypass and gaining the weight back. Also, I went to a few different info sessions at a few different hospitals. Also, a bypass is able to be undone since nothing is removed from your body, and sleeve, however, cannot. A lot of doctors just like that there's more research and success (so far) seen in the bypass. Definitely get a 2nd opinion, or just go with what you feel is right for you after doing more research. -
I'm still in the hospital, and of course I woke up from surgery super overwhelmed. I have to say though, this was a great decision, and I feel great about everything. I'm still a bit gassy from the surgery, and it's painful, but time will tell if this was all worth it. Please keep me in your thought while I go into my 2nd night at the hospital. xoxo AJ

Help! Employer questions
fattyaj replied to sweetmomma05's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Part of the FMLA act is that your employer is not allowed to question you. Get a simple note from your doctor (no details needed) and that's all the documentation you need. Your medical issues are not of your employers business. -

Forever 21 - Amazing Post-Op Results
fattyaj replied to Madison's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
It's soooo amazing to hear about your success! I had surgery on 1/28/13, and am also nervous about my PCOS getting in the way of my weight loss. Reading your story truly gave me something to look forward to. Congrats!!! -
that's good to hear. I'm done with my liquid phase, but am already down a significant amount as well. Maybe it is the food choices.

Hi everyone. I was sleeved on 1/28. The experience so far is going great. I'm super nervous about potential hair loss, and stalls, and just the mere fact that the Doc said AA women lose slower than any other group. I'm excited to continue this journey though, and reach milestones that I've never felt before such as crossing my legs, or getting to do "normal" things like go to regular sized stores.

My 2 week post-op check up with the Doc is on Tuesday (2/12) I'm excited to see what they all have to say. I've lost what seems like 19lbs since the surgery (That can't be true!!!) I'm nervous for what my mind is going to do during the inevitable stalls though. -
anyone in the process of getting the sleeve that lives in new York?
fattyaj replied to patienceshy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got my surgery done by Dr. Bessler at Columbia/Presbyterian. I felt fine and well taken care of after in the hospital. The worst feeling was the gas, but walking helps that for the most part. -

fattyaj replied to patienceshy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks! I'm feeling fine for the most part. The biggest hurtle is getting all of my Protein in...super hard! -
I luckily haven't had shoulder pain, but I did have awful leg pain (which doc said was normal). Since its now my purred stage, it's been very hard for me to eat the amount I'm supposed to. Gas is gone for the most part. However, I still have tiny bits of pain around the infusions, and of course itching. DAY BY DAY!

I'm an NYC sleever. 1 week post-op. This site is awesome. -
You guys are all so wonderful and supportive with the advice! Now for another question: Is feeling a teensy bit light-headed after standing up normal at all? Did anyone else experience this? Did it go away once you started the pureed foods (stage 2) for the post-op diet? Thanks again, xoxo AJ

I've been on the road to seriously getting surgery for 3 months now. However, I first started even contemplating it about 3 years ago. In all this time, the only person I've ever discussed any of this with was my Mom. Not friends, and no other family. Now that my surgery date is almost a week away, still nobody knows. I've been afraid of hearing the judgement of my friends, or having to answer all their questions because they're so curious. I don't want family to know, because they have opinions of things that they know nothing about, and I don't want to hear it from them. I've put in my leave from work, but none of them know--frankly, it's none of their business. Here I am, my Mom's coming into town for 2 weeks, and when she's gone I'll have no one else. How successful can I be with a Mom across the country as the only person to talk to?!
