I remember being in middle school and having to endure the embarrassment of getting weighed (along with the rest of the class) in gym class. Oh sure, it was "confidential" as they didn't say the weight out loud. But those in line behind me could see the weight. Looking back weighing in at 120 was not bad! I was a bit shorter than I am now....but in middle school I might have well as been 200 lbs. Things only went down hill after I broke my leg the following summer and spent a lot of time in a cast sitting around eating. I continued to gain wait until my sophomore year of high school when I started eating an apple and some pretzels and a diet soda during the day and maybe a meal at night. I had reached about 170 by that point and got down to about 140 with this technique. I was fairly active in sports, etc and managed to maintain this weight. When I got to college I was a typical college student and managed to get up around 212. In my senior year I got sick of being over weight and decided to get healthy so I started exercising and eating better. I got a little obsessed with things for a while-wanting to run any time I ate anything to work it off but eventually that sorted out and I got down around 160. I felt amazing and was in the best shape of my life. Then I went to grad school and it was awful and I gained weight like crazy. By the time I was done I was back up to about 220. I finished school and by that point I had lost any hope of losing weight again. I tried to do what I had done in the past. I did every program under the sun-weight watchers, doctor assisted, pills, etc, etc, etc. I thought about weight loss surgery a lot especially over the past 3 years as I became more and more unhappy with how I was but failed at every attempt to get healthy. Finally, I talked to my primary doctor about referring me to the weight loss clinic. I was at my highest weight of about 237. I knew I needed help. And not just a surgery but a dietician and a psychologist and everything they could offer me. I went through all the pre-op steps and even lost about 12 lbs...5 of which I gained back over the holiday. Now I'm scheduled for surgery on January 23, 2013 and I can't wait to start my life again. To get rid of all this extra baggage and see what is next.
