    fun thread -- names

The morning radio show I listen to in the mornings had an interesting topic yesterday. They were talking about last names, and if anyone does what their name says. You know, if anyone named Baker was a baker or things like that. I thought that would make a fun topic here, so here goes. My last name is Webb, and I spin as one of my many hobbies. Spin as in spinning wool, not the bike thing. Also, I work with the internet and networks, so that cracks me up too. My younger sister changed her name when she got married, so she went from being a Webb to an Earl (some people pronounce URL as Earl)... The CO of my ex-H's Navy Squadron was named Cosmos. Yup, Captian Cosmos. that is one of my all time favorite name.s

Heat Wave, Humidity & Tighter Band?

I was thinking that elevation might have an impact on me, since it sure does seem to have a big impact on the DH's band. When he comes to visit his band really gets super tight. I had a small fill before I came back to school, but the elevation did not affect my fill level. There's a good 4,000 foot difference, so for me, there doesn't seem to be any correlation between elevation and restriction. In fact I feel like I have absolutely no restriction. I know I do because I am happy on half of what I ate before banding. But I'm going to have to decide if I want to go to Boise or Salt Lake City for my fills. 3 hour drive vs 12 hour drive

Not a happy camper on the liquid diet!

The point of shrinking your liver is so that your surgeon has room to work in your belly. As it stands, everything is sort of smooshed together. By shrinking your liver, you are providing some much room. Yes they fill you like a balloon with CO2 gas (my imagination runs rampant...) but shrinking the liver helps it so they don't have to change it to an open procedure. You DO NOT WANT an open procedure. The healing time and the scar just isn't worth it. Well, it is worth the surgery, but it isn't worth not following your doctor's orders for loosing weight. My doc strongly recomended the liquid diet, but I didn't do it. I actually gained wieght between the intial consult and the surgery, but I'm a speical case... I was hospitalized a few times and stuck on more than one course of steroids. But enough about me...

VENT HERE - anger about Katrina Relief

Let me start this post by saying that I'm not trying to pick any fights with anyone on this board. Y'all know me better than that, or at least that is my hope. I always try to speak the truth as I see it. And so, I speak my truth, as I know it, have seen it, or have deduced it. People didn't leave for a whole vast number of reasons. Some didn't leave because they didn't/couldn't beleive it could possibly be that bad. Some of the elderly didn't leave because they figured that the evacuation alone would kill them. How do you argue with that? Some were too sick, but not sick enough to be in hospital. I know I've been that sick, on many occasions. But so many of the people didnt leave because they had no money and no where to go, and no way to get there. Some didn't leave because the hyways were already packed and to that wasn't a real aveneu of excape. Some people didn't because they heard that over packed cars were being stopped and drivers arrested. Some didnt leave because the nearby hotels inland were already packed. This storm hit days before the end of the month. When you are on welfare or other puplic assistance, you get your money at the first of the month. By the end of the month that small check is completely done. There is no extra money to buy anything let alone money for a hotel. If you have enough for diapers for your baby or gas for the car you *might* have, what are you going to choose, especially if you've been riding out hurricanes your entire life? I know that in their postitions, I would probably have chosen to stay. Why? because I've been without resouces, and I've been without a place to go. I'm sure even sure what you mean by "go be poor someplace somewhere else." There was no other place. No other safe place. Do not blame the victims. Please please please. For so many of these poeple had a very hard life before the storm and flood, now they have even a harder life. If you have never been is such ddier straights, you cannot truely understand the pain of poverty. It is soul crushing. Like I said, there were so many reasons why people stayed, many thought for valid reasons. I can only speak to what I've seen on the news or read in the news. From what I have read: People did not have a clear evacuation route. You are right Jenna, this could have been mostly avoided. But not completely avoided. We know that by studing human nature, that some people will never leave the relative safety of their homes for hardship and deprivation. The magnitude of the problem could have been reduced if there had been a clear evacuation route and a clear plan. We know that this was not the case. The officials on TV have said this was one of the problems. The dykes were only rated for a lesser storm. We know this, we have to live and die with this. But funds to maintain the dyke system had been cut an cut and cut. The project to upgrade the sea and lake walls was cancled outright. Who is responsible? Bush is responsible. The Congress is responsible. State and local governments are responsible. Finally, the peopel who live there are responsible for not fighting harder to protect their homes. But we know that not everyone is a fighter. We have elected officials that we expect to do our fighting for us. We know that this was a COLLOSAL disaster. Not only from what Our Mother did, but it is a man made disaster. Part of the disaster came from engineering and part of it came from people wanting to live where it turned out to be very dangerous to do so. The real disaster was the failure of our governemt. our Government is us. We are the government. This is our responsibilty, but we have charged our elected officials to handle the details for us. Because they have have been charged with the responsibitly they are ultimately responsible for the failures in the system. Harry S. Truman kept a plac on his desk that read "The Buck Stops Here." This mean that he accepted the responsibility of the office. That he couldn't pass off any dicision he made to "faulty intellegence" that the responsibity his administration. The office of the president sets the budget, He or (hopefully someday) She sets the cabinets. This president decided that he would weaken FEMA. Any president is ultimately responsible for what happens under his watch, good or bad. This president decided to stay on vacation instead of springing to action. Bush should have expecially known because he was a govenor. This is one of the things that govenors have special experience with and that is dealing this natural disasters in their states. He stayed on vacation, instead of taking charge of the situation. He passed responsibility to his Daddy and Bill Clinton for fun raising. He went on the news and spoke at length about keeping oil flowing, not saving lives of Americans. These are not the opionon of a crazed liberal, they are the observation of a thoughtful person, me. (Or at least I like to think I am thoughtful.) If I hire someone who cannot do the job, as a manager, it is my responsibility to see that job gets done anyway. My responsibility, not anyone elses. If the CEO of a company hires a top manager to do a job and that person can't get it done, it is the responsibility of the CEO, not some underling. If the top man at the department of homland security was not upto the job, it is Bush's responsibilty. If FEMA didn't have the resouces that they needed, it is Bush's responsibilty. The buck stops with him.

VENT HERE - anger about Katrina Relief

Tuesday night there was a ticker list of all the countries that have pledged support. (MSNBC & CNN). A Canadian rescue team was turned back at the border, because "we didn't need them." Lastnight they had another ticker list of all the countires that have pledged support. Country after country have pledged support. NATO has pledged support. I think every single EU country. Venesuala has pledged support, even after Pat Roberts... The problem is our SEC OF STATE IS ON VACATION!!!!! PLAYING TENNIS AND SHOPPING FOR SHOES.

I don't know if there is anyplace to send our clothes too. These people have no place anymore. Where will we send the clothes too? Today, there were explosions in NO. I'm just so helpless and angry. Now scam artists are striking. DO NOT GIVE ANY MONEY TO ANYONE BUT THE RED CROSS, OR OTHER KNOWN AGENCY. Spammer and scammers are already hitting.

VENT HERE - anger about Katrina Relief

The Canadians tried to send a resucue team from Vancover BC. They were turned away at the border because they "were not needed." I'm so angry and no doubt I'll make less sense than usual. I watch nothing but flood coverage yesterday and I'm so heartbroken. I'm so angry! Bush turned all responsibilty for this over to his Daddy and Bill Clinton. That they were going to handle the fund raising for this disaster. FUND RAISING?! His speech in the oval office was all of maybe 5 minutes at most. He said that "they" were going to co-ordinate with churches so that people would have someplace to stay temporarily. What? co-ordinate with churches? He spent most of that 5 minutes talking about the damn oil! OIL OIL OIL. That the pipelines would be restored and people thoughout the country would get gas again. OIL OIL OIL. Not about how the National guard is going to be sent in to help, not that pallets of food, Water and medicines were being air-dropped... his whole fucking speech was focused on oil, not blood, not babies needing help, not anything but god damn oil. Oh, that's right, the National Guard isn't really available is it. It's being used in the place of regular Army, without the benifits. I'm so angry! For the last several years, this administration has been cutting money that was supposed to be used to maintain and upgrade the dykes around NO. Last year, they out-right cancled the project, even though they knew that this would endanger the city. The Army Corps of Engineers warned them this would happen. (MSNBC.COM) This area had already been declaired a disaster area from one of the previous storms. Why wasn't aide already in place? WHY WASN'T AIDE ALREADY ON IT'S WAY???? Why did Bush stay on vacation a couple more days instead of instantly springing to action? WHY IS CONDI RICE STILL ON VACATION???? I know the sec of state deals with foreign countries, but with so many countries pledging support and aid, WHY IS SHE STILL ON VACATION???? There was no adaquate evacuation plan in place. NO PLAN. They already know that 20% (as reported on CNN & MSNBC) these people are poverty stricken, that they would have no money to do anything, no money for hotels, no money for gas in many cases. If you are on public assistance, at the end of the month you don't have extra money for anything. I'm so angry, I know I'm not being coherent. Bush said he "intends" to raise money. You know what, I "intend" to do a lot of stuff, but most of it never happens. I get side tracked. He's on his way down to "tour the area." Why wasn't this done MONDAY NIGHT???? Or Tuesday at the very latest???? Oh great, now he's blasting the relief effort, BUT HE WAS ON FUCKING VACATION!!!!!! God and Goddess, I am so angry I can't see.

Frustrated and angry with my docs

Someone recently posted something that made all kinds of sense about the subject of ports. As we get more and more toned the location of our port will changed because it it sewn to the muscles of our ab. As we tighten and tone, the port will move because the muscles have moved. Very weird about the blue crystals though. Very weird indeed. Alien abduction?

    Can a fill not work?

WAIT!!! What do you mean, "there was some bleeding???!!!" Are you talking about the spots on the bandage from the injection, or are we taking some serious blood amount??? I seriously doubt that there was any sailine leaking out of the port, not through your skin anyway. Nor would it leak out of the port from the injection site. They have figured out how to give shots through membrains figured out pretty good. Please speak with your doc and let him or her know of your concerns.

    Any Band-Over-Bypass people here?

Hello MC, welcome to LBT! No, I'm "just' band. I was talking to my surgeon and he said that they are seeing an up-tick in people who've had one or another of the different bypasses, but who are now getting the band as well. He explained that the problem is that the pouch y'all have will get stretched out at the bottom, but that because the botom of your pouch empties into the intestine that is is causeing probelms for some poeple. The problme is a back flow out of the intestine into the stomach. This is not the case with all the time, but one of the reasons that RNY et al. have a band revision. The other main reason is that people start gaining weight back after a period of time. Because they don't have the utiltiy of adjustability, they are stuck.
